... the big reveal of my new project:
I have started a new army!

During the month of August I acquired all the models I wanted for my new OGRE KINGDOMS army.
General army shot (apologies, unprocessed jpgs from camera, I generally edit them):

Also 4 sabretusks (not shown in detail).

I've done quite a bit of cloning with blue stuff and am reasonably happy with the results (it should be easy to see which unpainted models are not original).
Eventually all miniatures will have my paint job, but for the moment I am going to start with the unpainted ones.
Who know how long it will take... it will be a few interesting months, at least.

Bravo MoN, I love armies of big guys! Somewhere on the site there's a beautiful army of Wolfen. This looks fascinating and good to see the Monsters which often get omitted from harshly competitve lists. Is the unit of four on the right Maneaters? I especially like the Rhinox.

I tried to look for it, found nothing. If you have a link please do post it, I am always open to draw inspiration from others' work.
I do love the really huge models, even though I know they are seldom competitive.
But since I am not playing with anyone, I need not worry about competitiveness.
Yes the square unit of four is Maneaters, but not the official models because they are too insanely expensive. Instead I exercised some creativity (they still ended up being by far my most expensive unit, in £ terms).

Cheers Rod!
Progress is being made: yesterday I put a base coat for all skins and then added a lighter highlight layer.

Nice! It looks like you're making fairly good progress. Are they quicker to paint than elves or does it not matter?

For the moment it feels quicker. Less detailed and also using the airbrush.
It will slow down when I get to the numerous little accessories and the characters.

So a few questions and observations:

1) I love the kitbashed standard on the Thundertusk. It makes an already dominating model even taller!

2) Does the Rhinox count as a Mournfang and join that unit?

3) The Monsters are generally regarded as a friendly choice. Double Ironblaster less so, it's a nice balance.

4) Will the characters all go in the Ironguts say, or be spread out around the units?

5) Gorgers aren't popular but ambushing adds a nice tactical dimension.

That's not kit bashed, it is the official model.
SpellArcher wrote: Wed Oct 18, 2023 9:19 am 2) Does the Rhinox count as a Mournfang and join that unit?
No, it's another type of cavalry, still a special, it was published in a White Dwarf. Not in the army list hence hence not 100% official, some tournaments don't accept it. The Rhinox beats the shit out of the mournfang as a monstrous steed and it has 4 wounds. It is not a mount for characters, but you can have a unit of a single model which is the champion. ~125 points, 4 wounds, T5 and it packs 9 S5 attacks (10 if you equip him with additional hand weapons) + D3 impact S5 wounds
SpellArcher wrote: Wed Oct 18, 2023 9:19 am 3) The Monsters are generally regarded as a friendly choice. Double Ironblaster less so, it's a nice balance.
Unfortunately I should play 3-4K points to be able to field all of them!
SpellArcher wrote: Wed Oct 18, 2023 9:19 am4) Will the characters all go in the Ironguts say, or be spread out around the units?
Haven't decided yet, probably split between the Bulls and the Ironguts. I am still undecided wrt the frontage too. 3 is quite cheeky because it allows the characters to fight but not take attacks at least for one turn.
SpellArcher wrote: Wed Oct 18, 2023 9:19 am 5) Gorgers aren't popular but ambushing adds a nice tactical dimension.
I know and they aren't in any of my yet untested builds. Just got the chance to have the model cheap and then wanted to try to make a clone of it. Not in a hurry to paint them, they'll definitely be the last I do.

I have been painting for a while without posting updates.
In reality, despite the amount of work done, it is not yet very evident, just a lot of base coating.

I will now concentrate for some time on the bulls, the simplest and least flashy troops.
If they don't come out too well I won't mind and I will learn how to do a better job with the other more interesting units.

I know they're not close to being finished but it looks like you've already done a lot of work there.

I think objectively the second list may be the strongest, with the Maneaters. I prefer the first though, I like the cavalry. Third list with it's monsters and single Ironblaster looks more friendly. Grut's Sickle is interesting but it's hard to see past a Hellheart/Dispel Scroll combo if we were being ruthless. I know you don't have the model but a Firebelly might have added some extra spice. Again, the characters look interesting but with my safety-first approach I'd probably have slapped 4+ Wards on the Slaughtermaster and BSB without even thinking! Swapping out some Bulls for another 2 Ironguts to make a 12-strong Gutstar is an obvious way to go but again, models available at this point. Most of these are cookie-cutter observations but I do appreciate the variety in your lists MoN. I like how in the second list you have both the poisoned snipers and the straight-up combat Maneaters too, for example.

I've been quiet lately, but not idle.
The army is becoming definitely more colourful, even though no unit is complete because I keep working on (almost) all infantry models in parallel.

There is something about Ogres that screams "Striped Pants!" :D I like it. It creates both distinctive units and a coherent army.

The whole is progressing nicely. It's already better than some painted armies out there.
