ATTENTION WARRIORS OF ULTHUAN AND ALL THE DRAGON HATERS

#1 Post by wamphyri101 »

I would like to say something…

TOP RANKED UK HIGH ELF WITH A STARDRAGON!

Yes that’s right....A Stardragon lord is UK No.1

and not even bottom General Pash :D

At the start of the year I made a vow to be top general with a Stardragon only before leaving to Canada in May. With 1 tournament left (SCGT) I didn’t think I would make it. Luckily fate smiled on me and I came 15th (top HE by 45 places) out of 160...with 7 High Elf armies with the book of Hoeth!

So yeah…return those books of Hoeth and crack out the dragons

Well done, sir! I assume this was a fairly uncomped environment? This is most definitely very inspiring and interesting :)

SCGT is pretty min-comped compared to alot of others. Alot of luck and a little skill ;)

I just wanted to do it as I was sick of people saying dragons are crap and that you need BOH to win.

Next stop Griffins....or not lol

What was your list by the way? I'm curious to see what choices you landed on in a non-comped environment as I have a few choices to make myself with regards to the future of my own Dragonlord.

I think the Book is widely regarded as the best choice in the UK, rather than as one of the best choices.

Even quite strong tourney players are often unaware of the variety of competitive builds we see here on Ulthuan.

Which part of Canada are you going to?
For the dwarfs, there was only this. Hammerson met Grombrindal’s gaze, and the White Dwarf nodded slowly. If it must be done, let it be done well. Whether they were dead or alive, that was the only way dwarfs knew how to do anything.

And Grombrindal said "10 from the back, yeah?"

Oh great, the Caledorians are going to be even more... Caledorian.

Kudos! I'd love to see a summary or read a few reports if you were inclined to do so.

Based on the results (and him going to the 6 nations) can I speculate Pash will be representing High Elves in team Scotlan at the ETC.

Well done wamphyri101! =D>

Making a Dragon work in a tornament setting must be hard i predict but also think that winning withe Book could be hard also as opponents will often expect this in tornament lists for HE. They certainly didn't expect a Dragonlord to do so well i bet!

Just to note i am not a Dragon Hater its just i don't play big enough games to include a decent one. But i do own a model and wish to use him one day.

Well done, Sir. Very well done!

Last weekend was the first time I'd played 2.5k and of course there was no way I'd not field a Star Dragon! I missed my Archmage, but a chap has to follow his heart.

Looking at your list... Phew, I can't even begin to think how I'd try to make that army work... But then, that's High Elves, army lists can get extraordinarily idiosyncratic and non-standard.
What are they? Swordmasters! What do they do? Master swords! How do they do it? With their swordmastery!

Congratulations & nice work. I'm also considering going the way of the Dragon as I have a comped tourney coming up with max. unit size 450ish pts. Another successful dragon list is definitely inspiring me to try it!

Well done. What armies did you win (and lose) against? Tactically, did you fight like wood elves and consistently avoid combat?

I kinda wonder about your Heros item list, give me a heads up on your strat on your hero. I have seen dragon lance heros with 10 S7 astacks and I like to use a "bracer, crown, dragon helm hero" why did you pick thouse items and how do you plan on useing him?

Re: ATTENTION WARRIORS OF ULTHUAN AND ALL THE DRAGON HATERS

#21 Post by wamphyri101 »

Before I start I would like to add that I don’t think its all skill! I had a lot of luck in some very tight games.

Basically how the list works

Over the Tournaments I can remember I played

Falkirk: Ogres, WoC, TK, Beastmen, Darkelves
EGT: Warriors, High Elves, Lizardmen, Ogres, Orcs and goblins, Daemons
Stirling: Warriors, Warriors, Ogres, High elves, Warriors.
SCGT: Daemons, Vampires, Lizards, Warriors, High elves, ogres

So I had a good mix and managed to dodge Skaven completely! Also Bretts and Empire, who I like smashing up.

The list was based around the idea that I cannot win every game in a tournament. You just can’t design a list to take out so many different army types. So, I settled on taking something fast and hitty.

Also, everyone goes for the dragon. This is a mistake because it’s the other stuff that gets the points. He just jumps around being scary.

The reason I went for the lords set up is because I couldn’t find something that worked with only 80pts for items and equipment. Ward save was a must, as was the charmed shield with all those ogres cannons around. This with Dragon armour knocked me to 21pts as I could afford what I wanted plus Vambraces. Also I wanted other trickster’s shard as it is fantastic for a dragon. With 6pts left, I went for a magic weapon “just in case” so went for warrior’s bane. It’s “Meh” but then again I wanted my lord just to live and not do damage so my dragon would be tough.

Its actually funny though, as when he is challenged by a champion hoping to hold him up and expecting the lord to kill him, he doesn’t. Meaning the dragon gets to attacks and usually wins the challenge by max points.

BSB was a test I tried in the 1st tournament and I loved it. 3+ reroll/5++ in combat with a great weapon was brilliant. Spending an extra turn to get behind a unit on the eagle meant I was getting +4 combat res on the charge…really screws up ogres!

The plan for the army was let everyone think the dragon is the main threat. On one flank I put a small unit of 10 archers and eagles. Other flank I put the other archers. The flank I put the 1st 10 archers I stick my chariots, dragon princes. Dragon and bsb go on the same flank with the mages in with the main bulk of archers.

Fast stuff moves up the flank to get into position for turn 2/3 charges. The shooting tries to take out redirectors, war machines or weaken units while magic missiles take down skirmishers and war machines also. 6 dice lvl3 fireball vs most single characters/machines ends up dead.

The enemy thinks I am going to charge the dragon into anything big…I don’t. Turn 2/3 the dragon princes and chariots charge into the enemies front while the dragon goes to the flank and bsb around the back. The units in combat should win round 1 and then hold in the enemy phase with bsb and lord near. You then flank and rear charge, smashing through the unit and usually into the next one as the lord and bsb can over run if the unit is destroyed or they can all pursue if they flee. This works a lot.

Also, the enemy keeps thinking you will use your breathe attack in combat. I have taken down 14 sword masters in 1 shot with breathe fire. In the game vs lizard men at SCGT he had 2 units of 10 skinks at the back of the table. In my turn 3 while setting up a charge, I used the breath attack and killed the 1st unit, which panicked the second unit off the board. Great way to clear a flank!

At the end of the day, the dragons tough, but needs support. The army I went for gives me that but also ways to deal with horde type units.

Also, you cannot win every game or every combat. You just have to try and do what you can in games when your losing and in games when your winning you just need to not lose your head in the moment and think rationally to get those 20-0 when you can, as it makes a difference to your final standings.

Interesting so you kinda did points denial with the dragon and made him kinda a chicken hawk, as in attacking weaker things. You know this style seems very true to HE fluf where most people think Dragon+lance=blitz but fluff-wise HE tend to come into a exsisting combat with the dragon as aid.

Am I taking your meaning right?

Dragon still sore his far share of combats, but these were things he could take down easily or had less of a chance of killing him, since he is around 699pts if killed.

At SCGT HE:

Game 1: Spent the game running away from the balesword GUO. He took out 6 fiends (with a chariot) and smashed up 8 (remaining) Plague Bearers.
Died to running away from a Musician in combat turn 6....

Game 2: Flank charged turn 3 and took out 2 corpse carts. Then Smashed into generals unit (with 2 chariots and dragon princes) killing the Vamp lord in a challange.

Game 3: Flew down a flank, killed some skinks and then tried to hold up Skink/Krox unit but failed horribly

Game 4: Flew down flank dodgeing Hellcanons. Took out Level 2 disc hero and 2 Hellcannons (1 with BSB)

Game 5: Breathed on swordmasters, flank charged dragon princes killing the bsb in challange, rear charged spearmen.

Game 6: Dodged Ironblasters. Flank charged 2 Mornfang turn 2 with lion chariot, reformed and rear charged 5 mounfang with chariot, bsb. Got shot by cannons but lord lived.

It's a very impressive army setup. I'm struggling to see how it works against traditional 'strong' armies but clearly you know how to play this! Would love to see it in action in real life, I'm sure there are a few principles worth picking up on with regards to fielding a Dragon. I will definitely keep this style in mind when evaluating my own list!

Question: did you ever miss elite infantry?

Oh god yes. I love white lions but couldnt fit them in the list in significant numbers. I played with the idea of dropping the chariots or dragon princes, or even both, for a block. Problem is the army is fast and manouverable for the combat elements.

Again it comes down to knowing that 1 in 3 games my units will roll crap. You cannot win every game/battle even if odds are stacked in your favour and sometimes you just have to clentch and take it. Same with magic, you cannot prevent every spell, so just have to take the ones that will have less of a long term effect on your army.
