I'm not a Dwarf specialist but my general impression is no. 8th is largely about killing and costly elements lacking any kind of saves (Slayers, Giants, Chaos Spawn etc.) tend to fail. There are notable exceptions like Witch Elves of course. I believe there's an applicable Rune that gives a Ward save though. I guess having a unit might just be handy against an opponent relying on static resolution to win combats. Or because they look great!

Whaagh!

They have arrived on the battlefield, finally. :)
It took me far longer than expected because life got in the way, but painting this unit was not a pain, quite the contrary.

Only after looking at the much enlarged photo of the axe-wielding Boss did I notice that he has a bone nose piercing... I guess I'll have to fix that now.

Great looking unit. It looks suitably chaotic. And I like how you painted their skin, it gives them a very muscular feel.

Thanks SA, but I am afraid no squigs. Although I am trying to clone a giant squig to make a mangler (the first two casts have been resounding failures :( )

No, the next task is to tie a few lose ends (two anointeds, riding and on foot, two doom divers) while reactivating the clone machine.
I have almost a whole unit of cloned PG (6th Ed) that I want to finish before recycling to blue stuff to make moulds for cloning a few SH (and later at least one phoenix).
I will make sure to keep some original miniatures in case I want to clone more in the future.

Really looking good ! I love how they look wild and I think your paint scheme helps a lot in that.
How is it to paint that much skin ? This is not something we're really used to on High elves ...

I'm interested in your molding and casting process. Would you mind sharing it ? Maybe on a separate topic to keep your blog more painting related.
I recently started to play with resin and I'm waiting for the silicone to arrive to start to make some molds. At first it was mainly to reproduce the bases I designed and that will be 3D printed by a friend but then I started to see the potential in it so I guess I'll try more complex things.

I would love to see you do a pump wagon next. I really like that model and I bet you'd do an amazing job on it. Or anything elf related of course. That's always fine :)

That was some work... and I have already two that don't get used so it is unlikely I'll do more.
Those were sculpted from scratch, rather than cast. Unfortunately at the time I was too busy with the job and could not be bothered to document it, the same for the making of my giants.

Painting O&G skin is not a problem at all.
Being green the expectation of realism is somewhat reduced compared to pink-skinned species and it contains less detail than clothing!
The casting process is very non-digital. I would be interested in hearing about your ventures in 3D printing.
I will start a separate topic but basically I use a thermoplastic material ("Bluestuff") that is moulded against an object when hot. When it becomes cold it is a hard rubber that can be removed and the negative can be filled with putty. For flat objects the process is straightforward.
For simple 3D objects one casts the first side, then when it is cold the other side with a new portion of Bluestuff. The two parts must match, they get filled with putty and put under some pressure while the putty cures overnight.
The technique does not work with 3D objects that have multiple in/out surfaces, like assembled horses (they have to be taken apart).
In terms of putty depending on the task I use Milliput or a mix with green stuff (when the item needs some flexibility to get out of the mould without breaking).
All models need cleaning with a hobby knife and some smoothing with sandpaper/files, milliput works better than green stuff for that so I almost never use pure green stuff.

Did you already post pictures of the pumpwagon here? My memory sometimes feels like a Swiss cheese, full of holes... ;)

I managed to digg up a casting photo I made a few years ago here: http://www.ulthuan.net/forum/viewtopic. ... 16#p877716. Though my Bluestuff is transparent, the principle is the same. You heat it with hot water, press the bit you want to copy into it and then you have a mold. You then use some kind of putty to create your object. I prefer Milliput because it sets hard and is reasonably cheap (for smaller casts at least). And for a single cast at least it holds the details fairly well. I managed to cast a tree from the GW forest set and it looks pretty decent I think.

I remember reading your post on making the phoenix. It must have been a lot of work, especially making the flames in green stuff.
The body is always the missing part, there is only one in the box for many options of "perhipherals". I have a disassembled body that I will keep as master for cloning.

I remember seeing those :) They are lovely models indeed.

As for the phoenix, it went surprisingly fast. It took a few months, but that's at my snail-like I'll work on it a few hours a week if I remember to do so pace. The flames took a bit of practice. It's mainly a trick and once you get the hang of it, you get good results. If I remember correctly, you make a small sausage like roll of greenstuff, stick it on and let is drie for a bit. Then you can drag it out to a tip, which gives the flame-look.

The whole thing was an experiment and great fun to make. And very educational. If only I had more time... :)

It's been a while since I produced any new work.
I have recently finished two anointeds (on foot and riding) as well as two doom divers in winged suits. Maybe I'll post them later.

Now I have moved on to mangler squigs. This is a DYI project I am quite excited about.
It begins with an incomplete loonboss on squig miniature (old metal version)
I have made two milliput/green stuff clones using blue stuff moulds and completed them with goblin bits I had in my bits box.
Then made a base and a few mushrooms. I have a few more scenic items I may add and am learning how to make heavy chains out of green stuff.
I think it's going to be a fun job, if it works well I will probably make a second one.

I have finally completed my mangler squig project :)
It took me much longer than I hoped for, although I ended up making three, not just one.
And I managed to do a few more things... (two doom diver crew, two anointeds and a bonus Orc warboss).

Here is the first mangler squig

And the last - this is made with somewhat worse casts and is unlikely to be used, also because it is the third one.

Thanks guys, the detail is actually not so good because much of it went lost in casting the copies.
Overall I found painting these models a bit difficult, but especially after basing they have grown on me and I think they look good (if one doesn't look to close ;) )

By the way here is my new warboss:

I think they look great, especially for what they are, casts. Casting is difficult with such detailed models. Too many of hte fine details tend to get lost or distorted. But I bet that once they're on the table a regular viewer couldn't tell the difference or that they are not "real" models. Besides, goblins are supposed to be ugly as hell, so you've nailed them ;) They look properly agressive and menacing. And when a flailing wall of teeth and agression is barreling down on you, you tend to miss the fine details. So you're good ;)

The warboss looks great as well. That's a big mean axe. And I like how the tatoo's add a visually interesting bit to the character. Well done. It looks like you're getting a nice collection of greenskins together.

Yeah, I think the casting detail loss is fine, especially with squigs. Just turns out the last batch of squigs the Gobbos bred were a little off! That Frostheart is making me want to start on mine and throw it in a list, good job! Also, that Warboss looks deadly.

Good spot, it's not the camera - I shot with a good camera and low ISO.
It is indeed grainy, and it was caused by the black wash I was using.
Unbeknownst to me, the 35ml Vallejo black wash I was using was a model color (not Game color) bottle designed to make machines look dirty.
I have since started using a normal Vallejo Game Color black wash - found a super conveniently priced 200 ml jar that will last forever.
