Re: 2500 pts - White Lion Horde - USA Indy GT list
The type of list you posted is similar to my first thought of a GT list as well, although I swapped the Annointed for a couple of units of maiden guard and the silver helms for reavers. After playing some games with it though, I think it is a 4-1 list or a 3-1-1 list. Any army with a lot of 1+ saves...

Re: Dragonlord vs Daemons
@Curu, in the example you gave, I'm not sure how Great Eagle 1 is still on the table on the High Elf turn after the flamers and magic focus fire on him. Dabber mentioned in his analysis that he positioned the great eagles too far back, but I'm not sure that is true. If they move forward they become ...

Re: Dragonlord vs Daemons
@Curu, those are great diagrams, and I get your point now about how the characters could have been used to support the white lions and large unit of archers based on the deployment of the units in that game. I was assuming that you were advocating a different deployment, but with the mobility of the...

Re: Dragonlord vs Daemons
You close in with the Archers as well, using them as a central element rather than a hang-back one. Place the characters directly behind the Lion block, so that a failed charge leads to you not moving at all (since you stop in your own unit) and march them up 12" every turn. If he does anythin...

Re: Theban High Elf Army Blog - 2500 pts :: Introduction
Looks like a solid concept, very similar deployment to what I used in 7th in that you're putting your shooting in the middle and creating a kill zone and making your opponent react to it. After that, you're basically taking one side and ensuring that nothing can attack your flank. How are you going ...

Re: The Asur in the 8th Edition - Part 4 putting it all together
I agree with a lot of your concepts (spears over seagaurd, AM mandatory, flock of Eagles) but I still think you're viewing this game through a 7th edition lens. For example, my experience has shown that 50 spears is much more powerful than 2 x 25. Bigger units are key in 8th. Your Dragon Princes are...

Re: 2250 HE for Last 7th ed. Tournament
I think DP and/or chariots are a better idea than second SM-unit. Dp are a better sorcery banner carrier. Take GoC instead of Dragon Horn. After that take 10 points somewhere and fit Lion banner to spears. SM-GoC and spear-lion banner is waaaay better than dragon horn. Play spears always with the m...

2250 HE for Last 7th ed. Tournament
Alright folks, I'm taking the High Elves out for one more go at a GT in 7th edition. Last year I did well with the Star Dragon, so this year I'm attempting to win with a magic heavy list. But I'm a sucker for Dragons so I'm bringing the dragon mage. Lvl 4 Archmage w/ Seerstaff, Scroll, Ring of Fury,...

Re: anti-daemon 2300 list
In this sort of matchup, is it better to take 5 Dragon Princes with nothing for 150 pts, or a Lion Chariot? What about 2x5 or 2 Lion Chariots? Either way, I would have no other cavalry except characters. I think the threat of Flamers is low, because he'll be worried about dragon armour, and thus th...

Re: Er... Silver Helms, anybody?
I've seen this HE gneeral brought in 2x 5 SH and 1x 6 DP for his tourny and came first. He also had the usual Prince Star Dragon setup. Bit surprised he had them but goes to show that SH might have some value? He was saving points. Both units die just as easily and you don't need DPs to take out wa...

I'd recommend swapping the white lions for phoenix guard and moving banners so that sorcery is on the phoenix guard, balance on the swordmasters and lion standard on the spears. You also need to make your characters tougher to kill. I've found that my characters are better used by absorbing damage t...

Re: 2250 Tournament List
The point isn't that 7-9 PD and a bound spell is a strong magic phase, the point is that anything less won't really contribute to the battle. It is the minimum required to have a magical threat to compliment the dragon.gcsmith wrote:7-9 PD in 2k is weak in my opinion, i can get that in 650 :p

Re: 2250 Tournament List
In terms of magic to support the Star Dragon I think there are two options: Option 1: Scroll Caddy - This is what I eventually iterated to. But I also run a points denial Star Dragon list so as long as my enemy isn't killing the dragon, I don't care about him cowering too much. Except for Beast Cowe...

Re: How can High Elves ever beat Dark Elves
I've had success with a Star Dragon against Dark Elves, but have not played the Archmage against them much. Star Dragon + 3 RBTs has always been enough shooting to kill them over 6 turns. I think that I've put the Star Dragon in combat only once or twice against dark elves, and only repeater crossbo...

Thorek is easily countered by Teclis, but if I remember correctly Lord Anathir plays in an area without special characters so my question still stands.geoguswrek wrote:one word: Thorek.

Re: UKGWGT Final
@Lord Anathir - Are you playing tournament lists, or lists that are tailored for specific armies. I think that dwarves tailored to beat High Elves are difficult to beat, but a "take-all-comers" dwarf tournament list really struggles against High Elves. Also, why are you looking at the mast...

Re: Is NOT taking a Prince w.Star Dragon to a tournament insane?
Agreed Teclis is King if special characters are allowed. Even in "uncomped" tournaments around here, special characters aren't allowed. The UK GT doesn't seem to actually be warhammer fantasy due to the missions being played. Changing the rules for winning will definate affect which units ...

Re: Is NOT taking a Prince w.Star Dragon to a tournament insane?
It really depends which version of BS extra constraints....I mean comp restrictions that are in place. I haven't looked at the ETC restrictions, but if all the lists are the same, then that tells me the magic restrictions are too tight.
In an uncomped environment, the Star Dragon is king.

@geoguswrek: I disagree with your assessment if you're playing on a standard fantasy table that follows the rule of not putting terrain within 12" of the center of the table. Putting your RBTs down first takes control of the center of the field. Your opponent is forced to choose between deployi...

@Lord Anathir - Thanks! After playing defensive High Elves for a while I figured I'd swap play styles. Daemons are still cheesy, but I think that I played them differently than most which was my goal. I plan to continue to swap between the High Elves and Daemons so they both seem "fresh" t...

Lord Anathir knows exactly what he is talking about. I don't have much to add, other than you should go back and re-read his first two posts. Re: Stardragon build?
I've found that a Star Dragon is slightly more powerful than an archmage in the matchups that matter (Daemons, VC, Dark Elves, Lizards, and Warriors of Chaos). Teclis is more powerful than the Star Dragon in all of those except Dark Elves assuming they have the ring of hotek.

I'm not sure why you are using white lions instead of phoenix guard in this list. I'd swap the noble on foot for Caradryan, move the banner of sorcery to the phoenix guard, and lose the dragon princes for a level 2 mage and some shadow warriors. If you're going to cheese it out, why not just go all ...

@ SpellArcher: I'm looking at whether or not leaving the archmage in the swordmaster unit is a viable option. I don't want to spend the points on another mage bunker for him since that reduces my total damage output. My theory is that 3 wounds and a 5+ ward save will keep him alive long enough to li...

For any infantry unit that isn't likely to put out a lot of damage (read: anything but swordmasters) you need to at least give yourself a chance to hold against fear causing units. Especially in the case of white lions where you are paying a premium for stubborn. Swordmasters may be able to get by o...

2250 Tournament List "Blitz and Blast"
So after kicking around a few ideas on how to make an archmage viable, I've arrived at the following list. The underlying thought is to only use units that can dish out damage (mages, shooting, dragon princes, swordmasters, chariots) rather than units that provide static combat res (spears, phoenix ...

2250 Tournament List
After playing with a Star Dragon list for almost 1.5 years now and having moderate success (dabber posted my Bayou Battles Best General Report a few weeks ago) I'm looking to try something new. This list tries to keep much of the power of the Star Dragon list (which isn't the Dragon most of the time...
