Step by Step Guide to Painting a Chaos Marauder

Welcome to my guide on how to paint a Hordes of Chaos Marauder at tabletop standard.

The most interesting thing about this guide is that we will not be using inks to paint the model (save for the gold, which is rubbish without ink), and so I shall show you how to create natural human flesh without inking. Although you might not think so, the end result is far better than when using inks, as it does not have the excessive glossiness of an inked model, yet is just as easy to do.

Required materials:

  • A paintbrush (it helps Wink)
  • The following paints from the Citadel range (or equivalents)

    • Dwarf Flesh, Bleached Bone, Chaos Black, Skull White, Vermin Brown, Burnished Gold, Neutral Grey, Vomit Brown, Chestnut Ink, Mithril Silver.

Step-by-Step Guide:

1) Paint the skin areas with dwarf flesh, the horns with vermin brown and the beard
with burnt brown. The areas that will be painted gold should be painted brown and the to-be metal areas with fortress grey.

2)Take vermin brown and mix it with some water and apply it to the recesses between the muscles and on the face. The to-be gold areas are painted burnished gold and the metallic areas with mithril silver and chaos black.

3)Paint the flesh zones with dwarf flesh again, but don’t paint the recesses. Ink the gold
with a mix of chestnut ink, water and some chaos black.

4)Mix the dwarf flesh with bleached bone and highlight the flesh. Highlight the Gold
edges with burnished gold, and do the same to the metal using mithril silver.

5)Keep adding bleached bone to the mix and do a second highlight. To the gold areas
add a highlight of mithril silver to the absolute edges.

The Face:

1)Paint the the face with dwarf flesh, the beard with scorched brown and the horns with vermin brown.

2)Create a mixture of vermin brown and water and apply it to the recesses of the skin. Then,
mix vomit brown with bleached bone and highlight the horns of the helmet. Highlight the beard with vomit brown.

3)Make some highlights to the face with dwarf flesh and keep adding bleached bone to the horn-mix to make a second highlight. Add some bleached bone to the beard-mix and apply the highlight with short brush strokes.

4)Add bleached bone to the dwarf flesh and highlight the most prominent parts of the face. Make a highlight with bleached bone to the horns, keep adding bleached bone to the beard-mix and highlight.

5)Apply a final highlight of bleached bone mixed with skull white to the horns, and mix in even more bleached bone for the beard.

Painting the ribbons:

1)Paint the ribbon(s) with vermin brown, then water it down and go over them again.

2)Add some bleached bone to the vermin brown and highlight the ribbon(s).

3)Add even more bleached bone to the mix and do the final highlight.

The shoulder plate:

1)Paint the to-be gold area with snakebite leather.

2)Now paint a layer of burnished gold over that.

3)Ink the gold area with chestnut ink.

4)Highlight the edges with burnished gold and the places where the gold meets the black
with mithril silver.

The shield:

1)Paint the shield snakebite leather.

2)Wash it with vermin brown.

3)Paint the to-be gold zones with burnished gold and ink them as described earlier. Paint the
wood with a mix of snakebite leather and vermin brown.

4)Highlight the tips of the gold with mithril silver and add bleached bone to the woodmix.

Voila!

This is the result after putting him on a lava-base.
