War of the Ring.

#1 Post by Silver »

The new GWShop game system - War of the Ring, is really interesting.
Somewhat of a mix between all 3 systems - LotR's stat system (but made better), 40K style missions & Simpler rules (compared to fantasy), Fantasy gameplay without a ton of not-so-useful rules.

The game is still in need of tweaking and FAQs but it is at its core, a very good system.

Its the usual Good vs Evil but with no bonus/penalty for being either - you can play good vs good and evil vs evil too.
There are Games Workshop's additions to Lord of the Ring while staying true to the books as much as possible and they give us the ability to use characters and units from the past as well.

Every force gets a selection of "Epic Heroes" - named characters such as Gimli or Sauron - its like Special characters in Fantasy but everyone will have them instead.
Also making an army list feels more like War40K but without the limitations. The breakdown is

Epic Heroes
Common Formations
Rare Formations
Legendary Formations

You can have as many Epic Heroes, Common Formations and Legendary Formation as you want (1 Epic hero and 1 Common Formation minimum, unless a special scenario forbids Epic Heroes). As for Rare formations, they must be equal to or less in number than your Common Formations.

If you have a single common formation of 3 companies, you can have up to 1 rare formation of 3 companies.

Speaking of which - Formations are formed up of Companies.
Infantry Companies are 8 models
Cavalry Companies are 2 models
Monsters are always alone
Epic Heroes join up formations unless they also count as Monsters.

So 1 Formation of 6 companies would be 48 models for infantry or 12 for Cavalry.
Everything has a front, flank and rear and various penalties apply when flanked/backstabbed

There's a lot to go through but - for the most part, there's no rolling "to hit" - you take up the basic dice (attacks value, like 8 for an infantry company) and add or substract according to the rules (charging, flanked, lost models, etc) then you roll to wound comparing Str vs Def.

Resilience is used to decide when to remove a model - much like Wounds but for things like big Monsters, you roll on the "Hard to Kill" Table.

Also Magic can seem overpowering but its not too bad - though there will always be 'cheesy' combos in any game I think - but it shouldn't be too bad in this game, seeing as expensive models

Ugh there's so much to explain about the system haha.
Have a read of the online battlereport, its a good exemple o:

I hope this game system will catch on and have tournaments and all - its really amazing and fun (:

Perhaps we will see some crossover into WHFB 8th edition...

This looks to be a great game. I had considered mounting some warhammer figs on round bases for a skirmish type game. and then sticking those round based figs on trays for WHFB play. I will give this one a try first. :D

A very fluid, Excellent game.

Very well designed, Seems to be balanced really well. Plays soooo smoothly.

On the whole, i would go as far as sayiong its a far better game system than WFB... Its just a case of whether the "lore" means something to you.
