The Vallejo Orange and Yellows I use (Light orange and Flat Yellow) on Averland Sunset on top of a white undercoat are pretty transparent so they basically do the work for me - thin layers and you need no blending.
I apologize Rod for not replying in time, my intention was always to reply to you but then I seem to have forgotten.

I just painted up my old school Korhil (click image to get to my blog with a few more images).

Image

And now with a small collection of old school GW models I am thinking of making these into an old school (say 4th ed) army. What did typical armies look like these days?

I am thinking something in the line of:

Lord on Pegasus
Alarielle the Everqueen

20 Archers
20 Spearmen
5 Silver Helms

20 Maiden Guard
10 Dragon Princes
An Eagle
2 Bolt throwers

Any pointers to my quest? I don't know the exact rules, but I have read the High Elf armybooks of that time.

I guess the main thing is to meet the minimum percentage for Core. The Everqueen and her Guard didn't have rules (or models) until 5th edition.

Oh, really. I thought they were earlier than that. On the other hand that explains some things...

No worries. I know how it goes. Real life has a tendency to do that sort of thing.

The Korhil looks great. I love the old school HE models. Some of them are a lot better then the current HE range.

Unfortunately I can't help you with a 4th ed. army, since I wasn't playing back then. The army would look great on the table. So that's something ;)

Here's a chariot (for when you want to take a leisurely trip to town on a Sunday like this).

IIRC, the Everqueen first appeared in the stories from the 4th edition army book. Not until the 5th edition book for gaming though.

Good work, especially the chariot. The yellows and golds give a really rich feel to the colour schemes.

Nice Guinea Pig!

Next up is a pair of battle reports of my Sylvaneth facing off a Age of Sigmar first timer at 1000 points. For me its new as well, as I for the first time have a full Sylvaneth army and get to enjoy all their new rules. Here in the first one I actually enjoy them a bit too much. :)

:) Looks like great fun. I liked reading the reports at least :) The second one did leave me to wonder if there is a way to stall your opponent so he takes longer to reach your line. If you could have blocked one of the tomb king units in the central combat then perhaps you could have dealt with the rest of the units first, winning that combat.

As an aside remark, do you have a close-up picture of that sphinx? It's a great looking model. I'd love to see more of it :)

Yes, I think it would be better to push forward - and also I could have tried to put a Wyldwood on top of the objective too. After the first game felt the need to avenge my treelord and kill the sphinx, but I was too careful with the treelord instead. He's a killing machine and needs to be in combat.

The only one I have is from the first game:

It's not finished yet, but its looking very good at this pont. Mmm, that gold. I have to make sure my buddy to puts that final detail to it. :)

Just finished my Tree Revenants (click image for a link to my blog post with more images). Not entirely happy with my work on these, but the colour scheme's ok. I got a bit tired of painting bark while painting these.

Thanks. Its mostly the sloppy-looking paint job that annoys me. -_-

Luckily my latest project turned out better - a bunch of old plastic spearmen. I am working on a 5th edition High Elf force, and I think I am seeing the inspiration infect others as well. Before I know it I might even get to try a game! Funnily enough we started looking at old editions of rules. A big part of this is accomodating my buddys Beastmen army, which, as you all probably know, doesn't work too well. Now we are looking back at rules and thinking - maybe we should try this 7th edition thing again. Back when Beastmen worked with the 6th edition army book. I'll probably be using the 6th High Elf book for this, maybe trying out the 7th but tweaking it so that Speed of Asuryan is something else...

Here's the evidence - click the picture to get to my blog where I have a few extra pictures.

Nice job - I'm a big fan of our old clone warriors

I think Beastmen work just fine in 8th, especially if you use the Legion list (just to give them access to Marks).

Yeah, after about 21 they sort of grew on me :D

Let's say there's a lot of personal, and very subjective, choices working here. :) Our Beastman player likes this book better, and never really got the "new" book to work for him. Its partly that he has certain models that he wants to use and some he doesn't. I don't mind going back a bit in time, especially if it makes him enjoy the game.

At this point it probably doesn't really matter if you play 7th or 8th ed. The main thing is that you should find a game you enjoy.

The spearmen look great. The monopose of the models make them look very disciplined and well trained. I like it. And the red and gold of your paint scheme work very nicely on them.

I just think HE citizen levy look really great clone-style.

They'll look more numerous with the command, I swear! But yeah, in the long run they'll get a few buddies. In the 5th ed rulebook there's a picture of a High Elf army with two mighty blocks of spearmen flanked by two large units of archers, and two bolt throwers to support. That's stuff that puts some wild ideas into a open mind...

I was skeptical to that clone style at first, but its growing on me. :)

Here's the Swormasters of Hoeth that will go with them, the white lions are on the painting table. Its shaping up!

The clones pull of the disciplined and ordered HE look very well.

The SM are looking great. I like the older SM models better then the IoB ones I think.

Yeah, they do, don't they! But now, having all the other Swordmaster models, the IoB ones should almost be added to my collection as well. There must be a rule saying that somewhere?!

Yeah, I believe so. They're marked "Marauder" on the "slots" so it must be close at least. :)

We now have tried out Kings of War a few times. I'm liking it more and more. Here's how it all went down the last time at 1500 - the second KoW session for us.

Marauder kind of duplicated some of the existing ranges but some of their stuff was unique. I'd be willing to bet these sculpts are Aly Morrison.
