P&M Showcase: Eagles and Skycutters

#1 Post by SpellArcher »

Welcome to the next Painting and Modelling Showcase of 2016. The category for this showcase is Eagles and Skycutters.

The goal of the painting showcases is to let people show off their painted units, beasts and characters. New, old, ancient, alternative, newly painted or vintage - everything goes. And it's not just newly painted models, but all models painted over the years are welcome.

So, share some pictures with us of your models and perhaps a pointer or two how you achieved the painting results.

I'll kick this one off:

This guy is the Great Eagle of the Misty Mountains, from the Lord of the Rings range in the 80's. He's about the size of the old WE Warhawk. I love the model but I think I might try to brighten up the paint job a little. He's on a rock because I snapped his flying stand off!

I have this three pets back from the 6th edt days when they were absolutely must and auto-include choice for every HE list.
They were tottaly awesome, providing really necessary support and gave me great time during my gaming. My opponents were really annoyed every time they just saw them :D
One of the reasons they were so commonly used back then is they were in rare choice with RBTs, phoenix guard and white lions, but those were the days when elven infantry was a shadow comparing with 8th edt.

I'm really intrigued to see your complete army on the table SpellArcher. Do you have such picture or would you be so kind to make one? :)
I would really like to see all those old and rare models together at one place. That would be really nice view

Some great models here. Eagles were also a lot more important in 7th edition then in 8th. Moving reavers to core has made a big difference there. It gives us something useful to spend core points on and frees up valuable special / rare points for other goodies. In 7th it was rare for me (and most other players) to run a list without them. Now they usually come out either when there's some points left over or in lower points games.

@SA, I know how you feel with the rock base / flying stand. Both of mine are on my to repair list since both managed to break off somehow.

Here's mine (in better days...):

I've also done a skycutter:

Where the surprising thing perhaps is that the bird pulling it is actually modelled after a real bird:

Nice subtle work Myth. I prefer the lifting off guy here.

You've got a point Rod but I think there are enough good options in Core to often make Eagles a good choice. Nice skycutter, especially the bird!

Yep, in 6th (and 7th, though I played that less as I as busy overseas) eagles were a must have. You just honestly couldn't do anything without them. In 8th there are other ways you can go. It's nice.

Eagles are still an ace unit. They didn't really change between 7th and 8th. They're still the cheapest redirector (or even unit in general) we have. So you can't go very wrong with bringing them. It's more that, in my experience, once you hit a certain points level, you pretty much have what you want in core. And then spending 80 core points on a reaver unit can be a better deal then 50 rare points. A bit to do with diminishing returns. At 1500 pts (or even 2000) getting that SH bus, big archer or spear unit is a tight fit. At 2400 or 2500 it's a lot easier and leaves you room for one or two reaver units.

But I guess this is a topic for a whole tactics discussion instead of a P&M one... ;)

This guy really is a Warhawk model, one of the original ones from the mid-90's. He's very close indeed in size to the first dude.

Great models. The skycutter is very crisp and clean. Have you tried it in a game sometime? And the Leagle is one of the better conversions I've seen. Nice pose, the wings are seamless. I like it :)

Great looking models! I like everything you've shown, Owl, skycutter......but Leagles are absolute champs!
Now I'm wonder how it never came to me to use them in such way. I hope you won't mind if I took your idea for my army as well? :)

What I also like is the basing for Lions, Owl and skycutter.
Speaking about that, when are you planning to finish Leagles bases? :)

I'm hoping we'll see more pics from your army in the future.

Cheers buddy I actually finished the army about 3 years ago, just never got around to updating my photo bucket album!
