Re: A tale of Ellyrion - Steel unit trays

I love what you've done with the Sisters of Avelorn conversions. The first army I assembled was for Avelorn and i still have a soft spot in my heart for Avelorn even now.
It seems to me that GW left it far too long to create an update for the old Maiden Guard figures, but at least they've done it now so I can't really complain.

Thanks for the comment Wilda, I still love the old maiden guard however. My next unit will be about them.
In the meantime , some of my projects are finally done! Finally, a pledge complete

A quick update of the steel movement tray once painted and decorated:

Khoril finished:

It took me a lot of will power to get back in the saddle after my cat rampaged through my figurines, but I am pretty happy about the results. :P

Great stuff - I've already complimented the bases, so I'll say how much I like the banner. Its not very elven, but goes really well with the feral White Lions!

Spectacular autumnal feel to your army :D
I really really liked the way it worked on Alariellle.

Re: A tale of Ellyrion - Lucinda, mounted noble (WIP)

#35 Post by Findolfin »

Thank you very much guys, my wife tells me I should only do basing and forget painting :P
I`m slowly learning new techniques however, might be still hope for better color blending and highlights.

On the White Lions Banner, it`s elven alright but dark elvish in fact, from the black guard standard bearer
I`ll try to get around and maybe put a design on it, it was intended at first as a scarecrow or lichebone banner.

My new project is an elven lady, Lucinda ( or Lucia ? ), to use as a mounted noble or princess.

Image

The body was carved out of greenstuff, I still need to work a bit on it.
I already had time to drill holes and place mini magnets as I intend to have inter-changeable arms and items.
Here you can see the great weapon arm magnetized, which allows some different poses.

Image Image

For accessories, I plan a great banner, star lance, halberd and shield arm.

Here is some progress, with a magnetized head, shield arm and to be star lance.

Image

Wilda, it is not technically entirely carved. It`s a mixture of greestuff mold with my own carving for the collar fur,
arms sockets and the waist belt dragon plates to match those of the lower body.

But I am definitely having fun with greenstuff, I did not fancy the lady with that above sister head, so started to work on a new one:

Lucinda still in progress, I initially planned to add some kind of gold net over her poney tail, might have to let them flow instead. Not too sure.

Also, how I will tackle the 2 "balls" of hair. Probably have trouble decide if I add a jewel on a silver band. Anyways, been tough to think and work with the chaos at home. :?

What tools are you using when working with the green stuff?

My greenstuff skills extend to repairs and filling in gaps, but this is on an entire new level. Well done! =D>

Thank you guys

Well, that is my first attempt in fact, it has yet to stand the test of painting it. I suspect there will be imperfections revealed,
I know the torso was not so perfect but I was able to compensate with a bit of free hand painting.

For the tools, I`ve used my fingers, a magnification lense, cheap 99 cents hobby knife and a plastic spear bit. Also tweezers I stolen from my wife`s makeup kit #-o
Also a tiny pinch of water on my fingers when manipulating the greenstuff so it did not stick.

Technically, It was not a sculpt, as I was kind of adding part after parts like the hairs, the poney tail, the jewels and fan, with finally the net made up from strings. In short,
you do your frame, put the basic forms on it, wait for it to dry, add texture parts to it like a skin, wait for it to dry, etc... I kept a sister head nearby as a scale comparison.

The sculpting part was mostly the straight lines and chopping of parts and pressing them to stick on the head. With a skin like hair, you can compress or curve it afterward.
Ideally, I should have a tiny tiny grinder to sand and smooth it. Anyways, now I read this, might have been easier to just sculpt the whole thing straightforward

I found a nice blog here , think I’m going to get some of these tools, notably the silicon brush he mentions at the end. For the spoon and blade knife, I guess the spear bit and cheap hobby knife did the same job for me. Ball points and shaped forms like the pencil ends should prove easy enough to find.

http://natfka.blogspot.ca/2012/05/how-t ... kills.html

It also seems it is actually better to go with layers like I did instead of trying to sculpt in one go. So my instincts were correct. Main reasons he cite is that:
-It gives you a firm form to press against, which makes it easier.
-It preserves details you finally got correctly after an hour. In short, you let it cure before going around with other details and risking messing up what you have done.
- You won’t have to compete with the work/curing time when going step by step. Translation: be patient. I took 5 days at 1 hour per session, luckily in my case it was not discipline but rather luck since I only do have 1 hour spare time per day

A bit of progress, first layers are done:

I had to retouch the forehead since after a bit of paint some details were revealed wrong, notably from her profile the forehead did not looked correct.
So I added the tiara made of a triple layers, a bit like a rose.
I`ll add back the "fan" in her hair, as I`ll need to reglue it later.

I`ll post some more update of the body and other accessories.

Nice work. Greenstuffing intimidates the hell out of me.

Thanks you for the encouragement, really helps keeping going on :)

Ptolemy, I`d say your painting skills are leagues ahead of mine and I`m sure after playing with the greenstuff a bit, you`d produce marvels.
So here is the lady with 90% painting done and 2 arms accessories magnetized to her body.

Image Image
Image Image

I still have the interchangeable great weapon, lance and shield arms to paint. Also the pictures/symbols on the banner, and of course the basing and a bit of highlights/shadows to really wrap it up. Ya... let`s say 70% #-o

Some stuff I worked on: I`ve added an elbow gold plate, also a rose between the banner arm shoulder and torso, I added an open back feature on the torso just under the fur cowl, also a similar heart shaped one on the front. The neck was a real pain in the... well, neck, to work on and I decided to glue it permantly.

Re: A tale of Ellyrion - Silver Helms

#51 Post by Findolfin »

Thanks for previous comments guys, sorry if I was late, it`s already been more than half a year I touched a brush but after a long time, I finally was able to get some paint done.

Old models I had bought when I started, most of the silver helms had bits of old paint, broken parts and some glue deposit. I did what I could to salvage them.

This is a picture of work in progress:
