The Glittering Host - A HE Plog

#1 Post by NiallCampbell »

"We are the chosen of Asuryan, beloved of the gods and heirs to the world. Our armies are the finest in creation; swift where our foes are lumbering, cultured where they are barbaric. Give no thought to failure, nor defeat - we are the Children of Ulthuan and we shall prevail..."
Welcome all to my new painting blog...over the next few months I hope to complete the models listed below, following that I will slowly add to the collection. Although I've created a few separate posts featuring similar models, I thought it would be simpler to create a blog where I can update you on my progress in one place :)

I hope you like the models below, I'm no expert painter by any stretch of the imagination but switching to WHFB has forced me to learn some new techniques which I'm developing daily - it's certainly been a refreshing change to Power Armour for me!

Without further ado I present my 'Glittering Host' if it can be called that... a starting point anyway!

Island of Blood Set
1 x Prince on Griffon - COMPLETE
1 x Mage - COMPLETE
10 x Swordmasters - COMPLETE
10 x Lothern Sea Guard - COMPLETE
5 x Ellyrian Reavers - COMPLETE

Additional
1 x Mounted Mage
1 x Mage
1 x Scenery Piece - Elven Water Mill - COMPLETE
1 x Battle Standard Bearer - COMPLETE

Image

I hope by the end of the year to have at least the IoB set done and maybe play my first game to learn the rules :)

Wardens of Saphery - Swordmasters of Hoeth

#2 Post by NiallCampbell »

Please find below my first completed WHFB unit in about ten years (if not more!)... 10 x Swordmasters of Hoeth.
Some of you have already seen these and commented - apologies, but I'm taking all my pics and gathering them in one place!

Defenders of Lothern - Lothern Sea Guard

#3 Post by NiallCampbell »

Please find below my first completed Lothern Sea Guard.
I'm pleased how this guy turned out, even got to do a little battle damage on the shield
Looking forward to having the complete unit done.

Prince Althran on Sharpclaw - WIP

#7 Post by NiallCampbell »

Hi folks,

Small update. Finished another Lothern Sea Guard but man they're boring to paint, so I decided to give Althran a go, or more specifically, his griffon Sharpclaw.
WIP obviously, for the HE players/collectors among you, this model is a pain in the arse to paint fully assembled as it should have the elf on the back, but screw that, I've cut him off and will glue on later.

Anyway, hope to have more work done over next few nights :)

Really enjoying painting this model - It's not perfect (I've even spotted a mold line now that I've blown up the picture grrr) but it's getting closer to moving onto the Elf himself.

One thing I've noticed about painting large models (which normally I don't do) is that I'm rubbing off paint in places due to holding it etc, will need to find a better solution to that in future. More work done on the wings etc too, still need to do underside and tidy u[p the highlights here and there.

Thanks for the positive comments folks :) But remember, constructive criticism is good too, pointers on what needs improvement are always welcome :D

Speaking of which...it's almost at the stage where I'm happy to say the griffon is done, the front legs and claws need layering and highlighting but apart from that I'll be basing him then moving onto the elf.

But for the base does anyone have a good tutorial or vid on painting rocks/marble? The base below is from Scibor Miniatures - it's got a ruined elf statue on it and I'd ideally like a marble effect...just don't have a clue how to achieve that.

It's Sunday night which means time for an update!
As you can tell, this mini is taking me ages to complete, but it's pulling together nicely...slow but steady!

Since last time I've completed the base (I was quite pleased with the marble in the end), the armour is also coming along steadily. I had to stop as I felt I was rushing things so time to stop and I'll come back to the right arm and the harness etc. Also needs a few more highlights here and there.

And finally it's done - what a mammoth effort that was! But I'm pleased with the outcome.

Hi folks :)

I'm after some advice:

a) Can anyone recommend a good supplier of resin movement trays? I'm after something along the lines of Base-X's 'Dark Wood' tray. I'm not sure if any supplier is better than another though!

b) Should I size the trays for current unit i.e. 5 x 2 swordmasters, 5 x 2 Sea Guard etc? Not really sure if I should allow for growth or not in thse type of units :)

Any help appreciated!

Hi folks :)

Wondering if anyone had some advice on Movement Trays as per my previous post? :)
I may just try the Base-X-War ones and see how they turn out.

Hello all - it's been a while since my last update. Been on holiday and as usual painting took a back seat to real life!
Anyway, the production line for the Sea Guard is well under way :) 4 done, 6 to go.

As usual, any tips or pointers welcome!

UGH THE PAINT WALL!!!

Ever get that feeling when you just have to stop?
The three on the left have been progressed, the remaining four I consider complete. This unit seems to be taking me ages, far more detail than their fellow Swordmasters!

I'll hopefully finish these over the next couple of nights, get the champs done then it's onto the Reavers :)

Keep going, that unit is going to look amazing when its done, you are nearly there. You have done a beautiful job with these models, the cloaks are lovely and clean, with brilliant shadows and I love the shields. Cant wait to see the whole unit together.

The way you've done the shields and cloaks are really nice. They are bold and grab my attention. As for the paint wall music helps but when you really start to fatigue, just stop. I find I'll start to make mistakes and get sloppy, and it also drains tomorrow's motivation the longer you gut it out, and you don't want to associate painting with negative feelings. Just take a breather and maybe get a bite to eat and some fresh air, only come back when you are feeling motivated. Keep up the good work!

Just a minor update tonight - finished 7 of the SG and worked on the GW modular movement trays. I think I need to buy a few of those magnet sheets I've seen to stick the models to them. Anyone used them, or know a good and cheap source of them and the magnets?

Think I'll work on the Mage after this - the unit of Reavers might be a bit much right now haha.

Not sure...probably the mage just for something completely different. All that mail has burned me out - and that's only a 10 man unit!

On the plus side I'm lining up my first game of WHFB in about 10 years for this Friday! Going to put the above units through their paces :) Will have to use some GW store units to fill in for the reavers/mage as I haven't painted them yet but it should still be fun :D Going up against Orcs & Goblins so should be a laugh.

Will hopefully get my Sea Guard unit completed before then.

After the IoB set is done who knows...maybe a unit of spearmen or archers. Probably archers.

Thank goodness!

These guys are done...I don't know why but I found the Swordmasters far faster to paint. A surprising amount of detail on these guys.
Anyway, hope you like them :)

Included a few 'Army so Far' shots too :)

Running these guys in my first game of 8th Ed tomorrow so hopefully they'll do me proud!

Here's another for your viewing pleasure :)
Such a relief to not paint a Lothern Sea Guardsman! This guy didn't take too long at all.
I'm seriously considering buying a photo tent...the lighting is all off with my camera/iPhone. Can't find a happy medium.
Anyway - hope you like! (The 'lighter' photos have been taken with an iPhone).

I decided not to do anything too elaborate with the cloak - I could have maybe done a few runes on the cloak but just played it simple.
The store mage I used in my first game did me proud so this guy had to be painted next! Looking forward to more Soul Quench in the future!
