The Nexs-Files - 2016 UPDATES! I'M BACK!

#1 Post by NexS »

Hi All,
Well.. I've put my painting station back on my coffee table meaning I'm going to be doing some more painting and converting. So I've decided to take up the challenge I set myself a long while ago.
I want to make a prince on foot, but I also wanted to convert an "Aenarion" model, so that's what I'm going to be doing here.

Basically, I am going to be mangling a Tyrion model (being that Tyrion wears the "Armour of Aenarion") and converting it enough to make it look a little different so I can use it as a regular Prince on foot.

Watch this space (if you're interested).

Re: First conversion work now I'm back on-task! (Prince on foot)

OK, first pics. I didn't want to make him liik EXACTLY like Tyrion, so I've started making some changes. firstly, a big F***-Off shield which I stole from LOTR spear elves and i've swapped up the dragon on the helm (i'm still contemplating different wings to those that come in the Tyrion pack)
I am considering shaving off the flames and putting a gemstone on the shield.
Image

Also considering adding feathers to the (for lack of better terminology) "thigh pads"

Any comment or ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Brad

It's a good start. :D I think the decision to take the wings off his helmet was a good one, it looks better this way. If you really wanted wings back on the helmet, I'd suggest considering using the dragon-esque wings from the Prince/Noble set.

My one concern is the shield. I like the shape of the shield, and I think the way you posed it sideways is absolutely the right thing to do. It somewhat references Norman shield walls, and considering Aenarion was instrumental in creating the citizen levy (right?) and High Elf Spearmen fight in something approaching a Phalanx formation - which also uses a type of shield wall - which makes this a very good thing. (Assuming that sentence is even legible  ) However, I think the details you've added, while very cool and appropriate, are too prominent. If this is possible, I'd suggest shaving/filing down the back of the details so they're half as thick as they are now. This is a fairly minor change for a non-minor amount of effort so I don't know if it's even worth it.

Have you decided how you're going to base him yet? To me the pose looks like he'll have one leg standing on something - a rock or something - but I'm curious about the specifics.

Thanks for your comments! Much appreciated!

Firstly, in the high elf fluff, wings on the helm represent status and so I will need to put some wings of some sort...

As for the shield, I did have that same concern.. I may try and make a mould of the design and make a thinner design! I'm glad you made the point!

The base is something I haven't quite decided on yet. The stone was the obvious choice, but I eas thinking it may be worth moulding the remains of a khorne bloodletter or something under his foot. Thoughts?

Edit: here is a picture of the arm posed and wings on the helmet.

That pose with a dead bloodletter underfoot needs to have a caption: "next!". :D

Interesting choice with the sheathed weapon, however I think it looks cool like that. I think it'll add a touch of inevitability to the model; a kind of "do what you like, I will still kill you" atmosphere.

I don't know if this is too late (so please don't take it as an unfixable negative if it is) but...

1. How would the model look with the shield going 'the other way', i.e. not across the body but back across the arm? As depicted it covers up a lot of the nice detail.

2. As suggested, I'd consider shaving the back of the shield ornamantation down so that the image is raised up off the shield but not by nearly so much - as it is it looks a bit bulky to me.

Looking good though, looking forward to seeing updates.

@solith:
I thought it was apt being that it was the daemonic incursion where he "lost it".
Also with the sheathed weapon, it allows the flexibility of which magic weapon he is carrying. I didn't want to pidgeon hole it intobeing the sword of khaine(widowmaker).

@ferny:
Thanks for the comment!
1. You're right, it does lose some of the detail going across the knee and it certainly works well going straight up and down, bit I feel that every other model has the same pose, and it loses some of it's 'nonchalance' if it were to be across the arm. Which is something I really wanted to go for.
2. Definitely, I've ripped the pieces off the shield and made a mould out of green stuff. Once that's dry, I'll use it to make a phoenix, but much thinner.
I'm really glad I didn't take the easy road and just use the thick bits!

Thanks guys!
Regards,
Brad

Tons better - looks really lovely (and very elven). Will also look unique outside of LotR :D

It looks ancient and very elvish, well done!

(When it's by itself like that it also looks a bit like an earring  )

Taking the point that the shield may cover up some of the detail, ive posed the shield off to the side.

He seems kind of short mate, how does he stack up with a new IoB SM?

Hey mate, yeah I think he stacks up pretty well. He's leaning over and as tall (if not, taller) than the swordies. The Phoenix Guard are a tad taller, but they're standing upright whereas he isn't.
What do ya think?

In lieu of having a daemon to mangle, I've got to move onto other projects. My next project will be a converted Anointed, as there is something about the bought one that I just do not like.
While I'm working on it, I will post up some pictures of my completed units and characters! (once I get home).

Ok, so some work on the Anointed.
My idea was to make something like the image in the new HE book.

I've taken an old PG model and cut the legs out and replaced them with silver helm legs to make him taller. The torso was heightened with green stuff.
Image

I've replaced the wings on the helm with feathered wings.

Now I'm not sure if I want to extend the scale mail down or leave the tunic as cloth under the existing mail.
Any thoughts or ideas are welcome! Even encouraged!

Brad

What's left?
Gems on the knees, gem/rune on the halberd, fancy other side of the halberd, few little ornamental pieces on the greaves and clean up the helm/wings.

Comments and ideas are most welcome, as always!

I think this model is going to become a fantastic Anointed model. :D

About the mail - did you sculpt it by hand or was it done by a press-mold? In either case I think it could use stronger defining. Take something sharp and pointy and carefully scratch the lines between each scale deeper. This will help a lot when painting as any washes will collect in the recesses just as they do in the non-sculpted scales.

I like the greaves though, good job on those!

Thanks for the advice there, I'll get onto that tonight! It should be set hard enough to get into it :)
It was reverse press-molded from another PG mail tunic. I've recently started doing that for quite a few different bits and pieces and really enjoy the no-stress environment it produces haha

So i've put the gemstones on the knees and wings on the knee joints of the greaves. I've tried to add more definition into the scale mail.
Next step, making a hand weapon for him and finishing the halberd!

Almost all of the greenstuffing is done now. I've got a little bit of filing to do before I start painting, but we should be well on our way soon!

The two PG are there as colour trials.. I'm leaning toward purple...

That's looking really good - not covering the face, dynamic pose, big weapon, no frivolous extra bits - I like it more than the standard model :D.
