Hey Andrew good to see some constructive changes to your list for this army. I think this list now will stand a much better chance against WoC which you will at least face once. I like the amount of shooting and Phoenix bunker which is much more solid than the spears.

I think shadow will compliment your list greatly and metal will be a great back up for obvious reasons. Watch out for fate weaver
I look forward to see if we can get a couple of Asur on the podium this year.

I plan on getting some battle reports posted from this tournament and it would be interestering if we play to get a battle report from both sides (hopefull in the last round and from the top table).
Against Chaos I have been getting in some good games against them with some strong opp in my area (none of which are coming due to work). Have a good idea of what they can bring and will have to see how it goes. Last year I had to fight them twice in 3 games, that was fun. As for fatey, I will just have to hope he blowes himself up and save me the trouble [-o<

I look forward to seeing your battle reps, I have to clear a heap of game photos of my camera to make room for these 5 matches. Will definitely be interesting to see our lists against each other, not confident on how I would go. One of the WoC from our club "says" he is taking throg and a heap of trolls so sisters would've been super handing.
Are you planing on having your AM in with the PGs? If so just go for IF pit of shades as I believe fate weaver is on Ini1!

Fate Weaver is a push over in hand to hand I1, A1, 4++ Save, if either of the pheonix get hold of him he is gone, however he has some good spells.
My real worry is the chaos armies.
I am flexable on my hero units, it all depends on what spells I need, eg aginst a 1+ armour army it will be my metal mage. And lets face it the loss of 7 or 8 seaguard is not a big hit if I need to take out armour.
As for a big unit of tolls, shadows is good for it.

Yeah there are some good players there this year so it will test my nerve. You seem to have your strategy well sorted with your list which is good too see. Might have to face the Cav Bus you just never know

Good to see you again Avacii and had a ball of fun at the tournie. Will steel your post for a bit but will keep it short as I was going to to a full report but that fell over after the first game but will be back on track for my next one after having a chat with you.
Game one, the one which I could have done a report on. Made it to turn 3, this may have been my opp but I think I was to blame a little as I was trying to record every detail and take photos of the game as I went. Ended up as a 9-11 against skaven (twin tower list), I finished the game killing a rat dart and his hell pit in turn 2 (which got up in his turn 3) he killed my white lions (10 man) and Bsb. Had the game continued till the 6th turn, I think I had him and his plague rats and their tower were going down in turn 4 and so was a unit of slaves.
Game 2, against a Dark elf player with a Shade Star, killed the shade star in 2 turns from the sea guard, Missed the characters (he saw them going down and shifted them to another unit. What lost it for me was failing a charge on the sea guard (combo charge with the white lions) the lions made it and the seaduard did not (needed to roll a 5). Ended turn 6, 9-11 loss.
Game 3, against a Lizard man, not a good list and not a good player (he was also playing with the old book). Ended turn 3 17-3 win.
Game 4, Ogre Gut star and 2 cannons, 3 sabers and 3x3 mornfangs. Removed one mornfang turn one by killing a saber and it failed its panic, killed another saber but he made his tests, killed another mornfang unit turn 2 and the 3rd turn 3. His gut star went into the tower turn 2 (for the +2 vp's) and stayed there till the end of the game (he should have ignored the tower and just came after my army). Finished the game turn 6. 13-9 win (my flame ph came back in the 6th turn).
Game 5, Chaos warriors, not a great list but had all the luck, he got first turn, moved up, charge turn 2 and made 2x10's, turn 3 his last unit came in needing an 11 on the dice and that was the game. 17-3 loss. All I had left was the shadow warriors and both pheonix, flame came back in the last turn again. I killed a unit of nurgal warriors and some dogs.
Thoughts on the tournament. Love Sea Guard, will drop the Shadow warriors (did not do enough), dont like the bow and potion of strength as it means your Bsb has no real protection. Might be looking a High magic as it is still a good law.

Hey All first battle rep for Tricksters Blade Tournament is done, so head on over have a read and let me know what you think:
viewtopic.php?p=840154#p840154

Strike - Was a great tournament again this year and good to see you again as well. I noticed you had some tough match ups and you had some good wins. Please feel free to use my post as I am sure all of Ulthuan are looking forward to see how we went at Tricksters.
onto your games, firstly the DE and Ogre player are two close friends of mine and both very solid players (they both beat me to often  ) and you looked to be playing exceptionally well against them. the DE player IMO is probably the best general from our local club and for you to do so well against the Shade Star was top marks. I was looking at going to the Team Tournament at the Coast with those Two guys any chance I might see you at the Sunny?
Skaven was always going to be a tough match up for you and the fact you couldn't get through many turns is always frustrating. The Lizardmen player I was also matched up against in round two and lets just say it was an interesting game  . Was the Chaos guy you versed last round named Geordie? I didn't really get a chance to look over to your last game as I was playing Goodchild and his bloody Fate weaver for first place  .

I didn't even realize the set up shop was yours until we left? If so thanks for the great prizes you provided me :D

Results are up.
Will have to look up the details of the sunny tourie and let you know.
Yes his name was Geordie. Nice guy made some long charges and kept missfiring his 2 hell cannons, I think he got off 3 shots the entire game but never killed anything with them :) or destroying himself :( .
Goodchild was always going to roll over anybody which got in his way.
Our lizard man player (Nathan Dau) did ok against him getting a 5 to 15. And Trev took a 10/10 draw after a heavy night of drinking by both.
Overall at our club I am about the 6th best player we have (only been playing for about 2 years but have been playing 40k for the last 20 have been ranked in the top 15 in Qld), Nathan is about 5th, and the others were coming to this tournament but had to work or lacked the funds.
Yes that was my store, bring your wallet for more then drinking next time  .
The results were tight for 3rd with about 6 or 8 in the running in the last round

Good to see the results. Wow that last game bumped me down a few spots. Goodchild's list didn't have much on mine except he was lucky with his winds and fate weaver. We will get into more detail for the when I write up the BR though  .
I apologies that I didn't buy anything from your store when I was there, I only grabbed some hell striders for a mate with my gift voucher. Do you own the store up in Gladstone?

And yeah the QNK team tourny is the one I am looking at going too.

I cannot get the link working anywhere, have invited you into our facebook page Warg Gladstone (link works there). Closed group and requires someone inside to get you in. Basic details are as follows, 2400pts, 19th to 20th October, Cost is $50 but includes BBQ lunch on both days, 5 games, all battle line, new dark elf book will not be in use, open comp, army must be fully painted to place, spells which cause instant death will allow a look out sir, no unit larger then 500pts or 60 models and folding fortress will be provided for you (you cannot bring your own). Magic terrain is in play but optional if both players dont want it (the last one is fairly standard as nobody can force you to play it if both dont want it).

Yeah no problem Strike I'll keep and eye on it. I'll see if any of the guys are interested. Only problem I see is that I am moving at the start of November and Gladstone is a bit of a hike from here :(

I share your feelings on this opp, I took him on in the next round (He should not have been my opp but he had to go and vote and as the T.O was not sure if he would be back in time and I was the sponser for the tournament, I offered to take that game so nobody else would have to not play a game, and there were a few players I wanted to see play). I was still explaining rules for the game to him throughout our game and he was running Death magic for our game. Made it to the end of turn 3. Still gave him full sports as I could not falut him as a person.

Yeah it was a long game especially after a big lose, but hey you come across these opponents sometimes. I always give full points for sports, someone would have to really annoy me not to get it.

Okay everyone I am going to lay down my observations of my first competitive list (Cav Bus) with the new book before I move onto different lists. I played around 12 games total with the list and had only about a 50% win ratio. Not to say it is a poorly built list, but the loses came down to some bad luck and poor decision making by myself. I am going to rate each unit out of 10 (10 being the best score) to determine the usefulness and success of the model/unit.

Prince (8/10) - i'll admit that I have always loved a prince lead army. Since the inclusion of the lore master and anointed I feel he is only viable now mounted, which Is why I loved having him back. My prince was always a tank in challenges and taking out characters with the backing of BoWD. I deducted two points off him due to the lose of his defence since the 7th ed book and his reliance on BoWD. I also deducted some because his lack to dish out power seemed underwhelming for his cost, coming in at 277 he really isn't as good as other armies lords he merely just came across as the challenge champ due to BoWD not his own ability.

Archmage (6/10) - looking back at my time with the Cav bus I probably see him as a waste of points. We can look at different builds and lores that he could come with but tbh 2 x lv2's would have been more useful and cheaper. It could be due to the amount of times I cascaded (3/12 games) that has lead me to give him a low score, however he rarely was worth the points.

Noble BSB (8/10) - simple can't do without him. I liked the well defended build I had on him due the massive target on his back, I did loose him a couple of times but he took a massive punishing in the process.

Reavers (9/10) - useful in so many aspects known by everyone. Can't really fault the Reavers, only problems that came about with them was purely user error.

Silver Helms (7/10) - became useful for combo charging and flank charging. Usually drew a lot of shooting and magic away from the DPs which I did not complain about. Another use of this unit of 10 in some circumstances is when deployed they lead opponents into a false sense that, that was where the rest of my army would follow.

Dragon Princes (9/10) - I greatly enjoyed the DP bus, a mobile hard hitting unit that always put fear into opponents (obviously with character backing). Highly targeted which cause some annoyance and pressure upon my deployment and movement.

Flame Phoenix (8/10) - preformed much better then must people and myself would have thought. Great for support charging, and useful in the movement phase with wake of fire. Redirecting was great by this guy to fly over a unit (leave the wake) then redirect putting more damage. The Phoenix reborn was something special and works to save points and waste your opponents time of trying to kill it. I urge greatly to most people not to over look the Flame Phoenix for the Frost Phoenix, the Flame is still useful in so many ways.

Frost Phoenix (10/10) - the only 10/10 in my army. We all know what frosty is capable of and will make his points back every time. Whether it is by his own killing power or by saving your other units with the frost aura.

A note on the phoenix's is that bad rolls on the winds don't hurt as much as some would think. As long as you don't get them in a position where a good roll of winds is required (guilty) then it shouldn't be a nuisance.

Eagle Claw Bolt Throwers (8/10) - worth their points now which makes me happy. 90% of my future lists will included RBTs. Warning, if the dice aren't on your side then these guys will only futher the headache. Don't expect damage output from them every game.

Let me hear your feedback on my games and reviews on the Dragon Prince Bus. I hope everyone enjoyed the journey as i did and apart form a few more battle reports to come (using the bus) I believe it is time to go onto my next list.

Good analysis, hope you still post the third game too!

I think that's the best outlook for RBTs, they might do some damage, they might not, if they do- bonus! You often get their points' worth just from the threat they project, some enemies might be hesitant to move into an open position in front of them. I've had games where they’ve barely done a wound and that’s fine. I had another game vs two Terrorgheists (and a Zombie Dragon!) where my opponent was feeling charitable and pointed out that if I deployed it in a certain position, he could get heavy cover by hiding his fliers behind some buildings... but that was fine by me as it would really limit their positioning. Almost killed the Vampire Lord anyway! Then another game vs Warriors where turn 1, 3 wounds off the Daemon Prince, 3 wounds off the Slaughterbrute (lol). I can see why so many people take 3-4!

Also good to hear a thumbs up for the Flamespre Phoenix. As long as it’s not used as a main battle unit it should be pretty decent. Just hard fitting in so many rares…

Hey stormie thanks for the feedback, I am glad to hear you are enjoying my battle reps. The third game for Tricksters Blade will but up tomorrow hopefully.

I agree with you totally on the RBTs and it would appear yours are much more accurate than mine, you should send some of your crew members my way  . I will have to try and amp mine up to 3 or 4 but as you pointed out there are just too many good rare to try fit into since the nebw book.

I surprised my self with the success with the flame Phoenix. I really only took him over another frost because 1) the points 2) I only had one of each model 3) he looked cool. I just happen to notice many people on ulthuan underrate the Flame so I wasn't holding hopes for it.

Okay everyone it's time for me to move on from the Cav Bus to A list I have wanted to use for sometime now. As much as I will admit that Avelorn is my favourite themed army of the Asuryan it is time for me to delve into the Sea of Secrets and command an army from the Shrine of Asuryan. This "Phoenix list" I am going to perfect is clearly a common thought up list by many members of this forum so I hope we can work together to build on the effectiveness and success. First discussion of my list came from Mattruh's post LINK asking about Phoenix lists where I posted my first thoughts and others contributed to what became an interesting topic. Firstly I am going to break down the initial list I have written up along with different builds, pros and cons and on Friday I will hope to get in my first game (which I will write up). The list will usually stand around 2500 if there are any changes for BRs or tournaments I will advise.

First attempt "Avicii's Secrets of Time"

Anointed of Asuryan (General) mounted on Frostheart Phoenix -- 550
Magic Items: Blade of Leaping Gold, Enchanted Shield and Dawnstone

Carrier of the Phoenix King's Banner (BSB) Mounted on Great Eagle -- 207
Equipment: Shield, Lance, Lion Cloak
Magic Items: Armour of Destiny

Mage of the Shrine Lv2 High Lore -- 170
Magic Items: Dispel Scroll and Khaine's ring

5 x Ellryian Reavers with muso, Bows & Spears -- 105
5 x Ellryian Reavers with muso, Bows & Spears -- 105
5 x Ellryian Reavers with Bows & Spears -- 95
15 x Archers, muso -- 160
15 x Archers, muso -- 160

18 x Phoenix Guard -- 340
Musician, Standard Bearer & Champion
Magic Banner: Razor Standard
1 x Blazing Bolt Thrower -- 70
1 x Blazing Bolt Thrower -- 70
1 x Flamespyre Phoenix -- 225
1 x Frostheart Phoenix -- 240

TOTAL 2497; Swedish composition 7.2 (I think?)

<<Analysing the list>>

Lords

Anointed of Asuryan mounted on Frostheart Phoenix

Obviously the backbone and Pride of the list, which will hopefully be super enjoyable to use. I don't think I have yet considered him on a Flame Phoenix as the combat advantages of the Frost are just to good to pass up. I feel the AoA is fairly priced for the special rules received which allows the gamer to tool him up a bit more freely and allow him and his mount to still be protected well.

Equipment Builds (* will be next to first builds that will be used)--

*Enchanted Shield, Dawnstone and Blade of Leaping Gold. 2+ re-roll 4++ and 6 strength 4 attacks. The highly defended lord that with the backing of the Phoenix(s) and Phoenix guard will make combo charging highly successful. However some challenges will not be easily won by this guy unless a lot of 6's are rolled to wound.
Enchanted Shield, Pot of Str, Blade of leaping Gold, Dragonbane Gem. Best of both worlds, and probably the build I might lean towards to more for Tournament situations. The idea of dropping the Dawnstone for the potion came from RasputinIII explaining that one round of 6 str7 attacks could be super helpful against high armour saves or dangerous challenges.
Trading BoLG with Giant Blade. 3 S7 attacks means he could hunt monsters and characters with higher str. I must say I'm not a fan of only 3 attacks though.
Reaver Bow, Potion/Khaine's Ring, Enchanted Shield, Dawnstone. Clearly sacrifices combat abilities but gives him more danger from long range. The ring could become useful possibly giving him and his mount 3++ (2++ against magic missile).

Heroes

BSB on Great Eagle

I mounted my BSB on a trusty GE for mobility with the rest of the army, this also gives him the much needed T4 and 3 wounds. I can't see myself really using him in combat expect as a desperate/confident support charge. On Mattruh's thread some were concerned about his survivability and lack of combat punch. I could consider having him on foot in the Phoenix guard but initially I'll test him in the skies. I was also wondering if anyone thought a griffon might be a good form of transportation for the BSB (besides putting a bigger target on his back)? Up grading the Eagle would be ideal but I just can't find the points to fit it.

Equipment builds--
A thread I was recently reading had some preferences for builds of flying nobles here LINK
I like NexS' build but I have already spent the Dawnstone and Shield on my Anointed.

*Shield, lance, lion cloak, Armour of Destiny. 1+ against non magical shooting and 4++ is my best efforts to make him survivable at range (since the Anointed has the enchanted shield and Dawnstone). I also like the 4++ fluff wise.

LV 2 Mage of the shrine

In the army for pure magic defence. The scroll is a must have however the ring could be swapped for 2 more PGs, the 5++ to defend the Mage or upgrades on the eagle. Lore choice is another issue... (Keep in mind I am only using a LV2)

* High Lore; Is my first choice, simply because all spells are fairly low casting and very useful. If I get a spell I don't like both signatures are useful and if the Mage is bunkered in the PGs with a 5++ the Lore attribute would be good.

Heavens; would probably be my second choice as there are many great augments and hexes. The signature is great to fall back on.

Beasts; I'm sure would be many players first pick, obviously great character buffs and signature.

Life; the Lore attribute will also be very good for characters and Phoenix's. Not as many useful spells for a LV2 and the signature is not too good for my list.

Light; My favourite lore of all time. Not a bad spell in the lore which is lucky because the signature would be close to useless unless my opponent was packing Regen.

Metal; useful augments and hexes again but probably won't threaten my opponent unless they were highly armoured.

Shadow and Death; are probably a bit out of reach for a LV2 and would not have much synergy with my list. Although tough and strength debuffs would be great.

Core

Reavers are in the list for redirection and chaff clearing as most are aware. The question is should I drop one unit of archers for more Reavers and make the other archer unit bigger? That would make a safer spot for the Mage if I don't have the 5++ protection.

Special

Phoenix Guards

Fits with my theme and IMO are now our best special choice. Still at only 15pts each they will stand toe to toe with any enemy and win most (thanks to still have re-rolls and a 4++). Only downside would be the need to carry the Razor standard to keep effectiveness.

Rares

Blazing Repeater Bolt Throwers (tried to rename for theme  ) are a must as far as I am concerned. But not having sisters does pain me..

Frost Phoenix will serve a great threat against most opponents and having a second along side my Anointed's mount could make for a nasty combo charge (as long as the aura does stack, which raises some concern?!?). Theme and threat are great reasons for FP in my list and I love the model :D .

Flame Phoenix... Why not another Frost Phoenix some May ask? Well the Swedish comp system plays a fair roll (I want to stay softer than a 7) but I would be lying if that was the only reason. In previous discussions I have had on this forum I have mentioned how useful the Flamespyre is. The use of the wake is great against chaff and bloke units and fire reborn can make this bird a shot absorber. Obviously he won't come back everytime he dies but when he does it can be a real game changer.

Conclusion

Now I have given a break down of my list here are some things I must consider and would love anyone's advice and help with:

- do you think the fluff of this list holds up? For some time I have tried to get into the fluff side of the gaming and I want to start by the theme of my lists.
- the builds of my characters.
- core structure and units.
- is the PG bloke enough to back up my monsters?
- would my opponents and TOs allow the Aura to stack? What are others experiences with the dual Frost Phoenix.
- is my lack of Sisters disturbing?
- will the list make it on the competitive scene?
- any other ideas that strike people about this list please inform me.

Hopefully everyone enjoyed this write up and will continue to join me on this journey of the Phoenix King's army.

Charmed Shield, Talisman of Preservation, Heavy Armour, Lance, Lion Cloak.

Exactly same armour and ward, canon protection added. You pay 2 more points but seems to be ok as your roster is 2497.

Wow Thankyou! Didn't even think of this build and probably never would have #-o, that will save my BSB a cannon to the head in the future and I have you to thank for that.
