Secret Santa 2013

#1 Post by Prince of Spires »

Due to popular demand, it's time again to start planning the 2013 secret santa project.

If you want to participate, leave your name here. It's nice if you can include a description of what your armies are and what kind of model you want to receive. Note, this is not an obligation for the sender of the gift, just a general wishlist. Also any restrictions on where you want to send your model can be posted.

So, something like:
Name:
Armies collected: (+ any links to an army blog of photo's if available)
Would love to receive:
Can send to:

This topic can also be used to discuss any rules regarding the secret santa project.

- First one is easy. Models should be sent before (and preferably received before) christmas 2013
- Submission deadline to participate: I would go for August 31. But earlier or later is acceptable too if people prefer

Because of past experiences, I would add a minimum nescesary postcount if you want to participate. Something like 50 or 100 posts. Not too high, but high enough to show a level of involvement in the forum
Also, I'm thinking about putting in an update requirement. So you have to let people know that you have started or are busy undercoating / painting etc once every 2 weeks or so. If you fail to keep people up to date, we can check up on you and if you simply don't respond anymore, we can take you out of the group and redirect the gift intended for you to whoever would otherwise not receive a gift. Note, just a line saying "I'm still here but haven't started yet" is also acceptable. Just need to know you're still participating.

Any thoughts on these restrictions? Anything else you want included? Remarks, thoughts etc...

The rules for participating this year. They can still change a bit...

- Sign-up ends on sunday August 18th
- In the 2 weeks following that I will send out SS details and ask for adresses etc. You will receive a note saying who you have to create a SS for.
- The minimum requirement is a single painted model (think lord/hero type). More is allowed ofcourse, and conversions are encouraged.
- models are to be send out so the arrive in time for Christmas. If you are going to end up being late for whatever reason (it happens...) please, let us know.
- Don't put your model in the mail before end of Oktober. By then we might have some indication of wether someone is still in or not and can redirect the gift is nescesary.
- Take pictures of your work, at the minimum before sending it. That way, if it does get lost in the mail, you can at least comfort whoever was to receive it with how lovely his gift would have been.
- Starting from september, people are expected to check in at the beginning of the month with a small status update (a small message saying "haven't started yet" is fine in the beginning). This way, we know you are still aware of the SS thing and it hopefully prevents people from dropping out. If you don't react, I'll chase after you. If you still don't react, I'll just redirect your SS to someone else.
- have fun

Signing back up again!

Name: Elessehta
Armies: High Elves, Dark Angels(40k), Wood Elves(LotR).
Would Love to Receive:
-Anything High Elf related, Spears help me tie it in with my huge army, or Sea themed actually.
-My DA army is decently sized but could use more Raven Wing or HQ models.
-Wood Elf/Mirkwood Lord of the Rings models. I have no Warband leaders, so a Legolas, or Wood Elf King would be nice.
Can Ship to: Anywhere, last year it may have taken a while, but my model made it eventually.

I'm in again...

Name: Tinman
Armies: HE's (main), Beasts & Wood Elves (these I don't use often)
I'm good for any model for High Elves - I will use it... Maybe a cool unit filler...
Here's my link...
http://www.ulthuan.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=34366
Any colors will do. It doesn't need to be so close to my colors...

I guess my only comment is, I saw far to many start to late, but at least there was communication. I'm not sure if this will ever be perfect but I think communication is key as mentioned from Rod..

If you can't complete your project that's ok, just make sure to let someone know so we can cover the shortfall...

Count me in too! I thought it was awesome last year!

Name: John Rainbow
Armies collected: HEs, Mousillon (undead) themed Brets, Blood Angels, Eldar (links in my signature)
Would love to receive: Anything Mousillon-Bretonnian would be awesome (yellow/black colours)
Can send to: Pretty much anywhere (though USA is easiest obviously)

Armies collected: high elves, vampire counts, orcs and goblins, lizardmen, and D&D (so I can use pretty much anything! )
Would love to receive: anything you'd enjoy painting. I love gw or 3rd party manufacturers' models.
Can send to: just about anything to anybody. As I mentioned in the other thread, I have loads of unpainted models from all sorts of armies. Plus I don't mind buying or converting something.

I promise I'll start earlier this year! Last year I didn't ship until January...

Count me in...

EDIT:

Name: Malossar Dragonborne
Armies: High Elves, White Scars. Tomb Kings with a purple color scheme on red rock cork bases. Test model and painting log coming. I've also started a Japanese Sectorial Army for Infinity with a white and green color scheme.

Would Love to Receive: Anything to be honest. My group plays quite a bit of Storm of Magic, Apoc and themed campaigns that allow for really creative and unique units. My High Elves are done so I'd be interested in some centerpiece type characters or something. My White Scars are pretty well rounded, but rumor has it we'll be getting a new book shortly so that could spark some models I dont have yet.

Can Ship to: Anywhere! In 5 years of online trading i've yet to lose a package (knock on wood!) internationally.
I live in: The United States of America.

I am eager to get started!

I'd be willing to do this, if my post count is considered valid. I like the idea of fun projects.

Name: Domine Nox
Armies Collected: Avelorn High Elves, Bretonnians, Fire Hawks Space Marines, Tzeench/Slaanesh Chaos Daemons (High Elf log is in signature)
Would love to receive: Pretty open really, anything that fits any of the themes since I don't want to be demanding, primary focus is on High Elves and Daemons at present.
Can send to: Anywhere, but would much prefer US for cost and convenience, just a preference though, not a stipulation.

On the Prerequisites to participate:

Its a challenging notion on how to make(let alone enforce) a requirement in order to paint a model and send it to a complete stranger.

Something i think that irked me was a member who never sent is still active and posting without ever mentioning their failure to deliver on something they promised. That might be a more personal feeling as I tend to be old school in thinking that a person's word is everything...

100 posts doesn't really mean much tbh. With the new book freshly released we've had a major influx of activity and thus posting. Maybe it's something closer to time spent on the board. Or how long they've been active.

Look at Elithmar, I think he signed up a few months after I did (this is a new screen name too btw! I lost my original password and email that it was connected to when I first signed up in '06) and I think he has at least twice as many posts as I do! Or someone else in the thread Grantmepower has been a member since 2008 and only has 888 posts but i would never dream of calling him inactive.

I guess that's just to say that post counts are a bit fickle, but like most good critics I've only sorted through the idea rather than a possible solution ;)

Would love to receive: Unit fillers. Preferably 40 mm. Otherwise a cool foot BSB, paint something interesting or fun for you to paint so long as it is High Elfy.
Can send to: Anywhere. After the custom dice experience, I think I could handle sending it anywhere.

On the every 2 week check-ups/check-ins.. I'm not sure the nannying is the way to go. With last year's exchange, like with everything, I procrastinated and still got out a nice model to my recipient before christmas. It's just how some people work. Checking in for over three months before Christmas seems a bit excessive..

Perhaps the frequence can change, or the first month or 2 you only need to check in once per month etc.

As I saide, the checking in doesn't need to be a lengthy desciption of what you are doing, just needs to be a sign that you're still aware that you have a model to make. A simply line saying "still procrastinating" if fine (unless it's 2 weeks before christmas obviously). And missing a checkin isn't an immediate death sentence. It just means you'd probably receive a PM a week or 2 later asking if you're still participating.

Part of the issue last year I think was that people signed up and then simply disappeared. By the time we realised that they might not make a model their gift had already been sent to them and it was too late to change. This way, we know that you're still around and are aware that you have a secret santa to build and if you're not then we can rearange stuff so everyone should get something.

I'm open to other ideas though. It was just an initial suggestion. If someone has a great idea about how to keep people honest that is little work for all parties involved then please share it.

Yeah! (I know I don't log in often any more, but I still try to keep track of this wonderful group of hobbyists!)

Name: Anvalous
Armies collected: Empire, Bretonnian-themed Ogres, Orcs and Goblins (old ones...) these days... I did sell my lion-themed beastmen http://z8.invisionfree.com/herdstone/in ... opic=23506
Would love to receive: I just love cool models! In terms of things that's be most "useful", that'd probably be a warrior priest of foot or mounted. Old orcs are very fun (80's). I wish I had the defenders of Ulthuan on my shelf, but alas, it isn't so. All of that said, to reiterate, I love converted models and care, so whatever I get will bring a smile to my face.
Can send to: Anywhere!

Monthly seems good with a PM ping if missed - so long as you're willing to take that extra bit of time ;-)

Exciting!

Silver did quite a bit of checking up last year, I remember panicking every time a message from from him arrived. As for policing it, good luck, there needs to be a lot trust in something like this.

Would love to receive: Anything that is fun to paint/convert. GW or non-GW, I do not mind.. Apart from the two armies, I am also looking for a nice (drunken) dwarf model that would fit a Brewhouse terrain I intend to make one day... He'll be run over every time the armies pass, but hey, they are supposed to be tough.

Can send to: About anywhere.

As I wrote in last year’s thread, there are actually not that many people who didn’t send their gifts (can’t have Loremasters and other honourable members of the board accused of that crime, can we?). There were some people who never confirmed whether they received their gifts or not, but there is no way to prevent that entirely. Everyone participating should be aware of it.
To write “still in” once a month isn’t too taxing so I would go with that. If someone knows s/he will be absent for longer time, they can just say so beforehand and all is well.

I am not sure how to answer this - Sorry. Part of me says sure why not, but another part says no. it's not about the paint job. It's about the thought, effort and building/getting something special just for the receiver. If I want or need something new I just go get it, but that's not the point. Perhaps, one of our Loremasters can put all the Secret Santa threads under one heading so anyone can see all the conversion work that has been completed. Can you do this? Have you posted anything of any of your work, conversions army pics ect?... But I also want as many people to be apart of this - it is really fun!! So I don't know...

The intention has always been to push your modelling and painting skills to new heights for someone other than yourself. Personally, I don't want to receive a new toy! It means I have to build and convert it so it would seem more like a project and less like a special gift meant for me.

I had a problem like this a few years ago. I drew a painter who was simply better than I was. I didn't want to give him something that I knew would be the worst item in his collection. So, instead, I built him a herdstone terrain piece to go with his WIP beastman army that had a lion-based theme. I think he was genuinely pleased with the gift!

Just to emphasize what the others have said - this is about a surprise and knowing that someone else put time, thought, and imagination into your piece. It is also about doing the same for someone else. I've been in exchanges with guys who are smash-up converters and sculptors, but don't touch brushes. They send a converted piece, ready for paint. I've not seen once person say boo to anything in the mail.

@ Ptolemy - that herdstone was TOTALLY appreciated, and your paint skills are rockin' :-D

I'm in. I wasn't really around when it was active last year.

This right now. I will most likely be incommunicado from mid-October to early-to-mid-November. That's exam time for me and Mechatronic Engineering is HARD. But I can usually get a conversion and/or a single model painted up relatively quickly, it's just working my way through units that hurts and kills my mojo.

Name: Asarion
Armies Collected: High Elves, Eldar, (Infinity - Yu Jing)
Scheme: High Elves (Caledor as in my Plog), Eldar - Bone armour and purple (Bone armour is the linking colour for aspects)
Would love to receive: Mages, I still haven't managed to get a HE Mage painted up in my colour scheme (still using one I painted over 10 years ago)
Or anything Eldar.
Can send to: Anywhere
Location: Sydney, Australia
