Peepster PLOG; 16 june Blacksmith
Greeting fellow HE players,
My name is Peepster (1976), I'm from the Netherlands (so pardon my english) and I would like to share with you my army.
In december 2011 a friend and I decided to restart our WFB hobby. We both played WFB 5th edition and haven't played since. He started a Ogre army, and I a HE army. My former army is WoC and I wanted a different army now, one that was different to paint, more shooting and an good-guy. I doubted between HE and DE, so HE it was.
I'm a big fan of the work of scibor so I will use their bases a lot!
http://sciborminiatures.com/
Because during gaming we look mostly at a battlefield I started with the Warhammer "Realm of Battle Gameboard", I painted it and flocked(?) it. I bought some units and a battalion and started painting.
It's not work it's a hobby so I paint what I like, so not everything is finished in one go, working opn multiple units at once. It will be finished eventually and I will post pics (If I figure out HOW???!!), of the proces and the result.
Keep You posted,
Greetings,
Peepster

Re: Peepster PLOG; HE Shadow Army
One of the main things I'm working on now is the Carmine Dragon. In my opinion it's one of the better dragons out there.
Because my HE army is more grim then the standard white-blue, i started the dragon more dark as well. ALso, it's one of my first attempt on blending on the model
The wings are detachable with 2 mangets, something i plan to do with more of my models. Most of my units are in boxes in the basement so it needs to be as small as possible.
An interresting feature of the Carmine Dragon are the belly and spine scales, it looks to me more of an "open wound" kind of "scale" (whatever that is) but it seems a bit off, so I decided to emphasize is with a different colour and with a bit of glossy (nail pollish as I call it)
Without the magnetic wings
The "scar" with "nail pollish"
as you all can see still work in progress.
Keep U posted.

I've seen your pics of the board, you are take the better aproach, make it yourself!! I do not have the space for that.... unfortunately.
But it's more work then I thought, and so much worth the effort. Playing the game, the most of the time you look at the battlefield, that's why a nice (or in JoeElf's case, a GREAT) battlefield increases the join of the game.

Re: Peepster PLOG; HE Shadow Army
The rocks on your board really pop. Is there blue in your recipe?
Re: Peepster PLOG; HE Shadow Army
I see why you're choosing those bases. They're spectacular. I just started re-painting my army, going for a grassy-field boring basing look. Starting to get jealous now, though!
Also, that dragon is looking fab-tastic. I like the darker theme, as opposed to the obligatory bright whites and pure blues that nearly everyone goes for. Good one on you.

Re: Peepster PLOG; HE Shadow Army
My swordmasters work in progress.
Since they are from the big towerm i didn't choose an elven-forest theme base for them. Red also is an color not much in use for my infantry, so red tiles make them stand out. I need to tone them down a bit, i still think they are too blue, so maybe a dark blue wash for the clothes and a black one for the armor.
I like these guys a lot and I started playing these guys in big blocks..... well that didn't work out. Now i use 1 (or 2) block 4x2, nice and small no FC just a M, good for the flanks.

And this is my current project, already working on it for 3 weeks. Assembling 30 WL and pinning them on bases. These f-ers have 2 mm2 of surface to put glue on. So thats a bit of a problem with these irregular surface bases.

Re: Peepster PLOG; HE Shadow Army
They are the base itself. U can see them on the unpaited versions I posted earlier. I positioned the bases so the leaves would be on the frontside.Shannar, Sealord wrote:Where are those leaves from?
On the bases of the SM I used some leaves from gamesworkshop, but those are too expensive ofcourse, wouldn'd recommend buying those.

Re: Peepster PLOG; HE Shadow Army
Nice scheme! A bit darker for my taste but they turned out pretty neat! Also the dragon look frightening with these colors but thats how dragons should be! I agree with the bases, they are awesome! I 'm not sure about the red thow.
I also think you should make the gems more realistic, they will make a lot of diference if you do so!! I think they dont fit with your overall painting effort!!
The kindest regards and welcome back to the hoby!

Re: Peepster PLOG; HE Shadow Army
In april I continued on my airforce so mainly the aegles and a bit on the dragon.
It is the first time i'm painting feathers, and not that I don't like the painting displayed on ulthuan, but i always thought is was to easy. It was more of a fur look to me; dark brown, light brown, high light, and a bit of bleached bone finish. Besides that imho the wings are to symmetrical painted (a row of brown followed by a row of white/grey/black.
I think feather are different. So i looked closely at some eagle pics online, and with feather the white bit is closest to the bird. So when spreading the wings the tip is/can-be darker than the base of the feather. So when it comes to feather I think you can high-light with darker colors.
An other thing I noticed is that an (for example) sea eagle is not just brown, it brown/grey/black etc etc. And there are more colors on one wing, one feather actually, and they don't follow a pattern.
Oh.... and White on a bird is WHITE... no nedd for wash or high light there.
So I started blending on the wings itself to get a more divers brown/grey pattern on the eagle. ANd leaving the white white (sounds like a liquid laundry detergent commercial)
this is the pattern i thought might work, after this a black wash to make the colours stand out less, and high light with light brown.
The white pattern on the eagle is based on the so called Steller's Eagle. It's an east-asian eagle. Thought is was an original pattern that i haven't seen before on miniatures
Working on a the second eagle now, trying out black/brown high light on the tip of the feather with that one, it's gonna be based on a white belly eagle
Last a little pic of my dragon, great model, it's now 70% done.
thanks for visiting

Continuing on the Eagle
WHite belly this time
The inner side og the wing needs a wash and a drybrush finish.
The back side is almost finished, some work on the tail needs to be done. The back and the backside of the wings i druybrushed with dark grey and black, I think that works with light feathers.
Keep u posted

Re: Peepster PLOG; HE Shadow Army
new work in June.
Working on my RBT and the great sisters of Averlorn, big fan of these ladies. Last but not least some steps are mode on my dragon.
Hope u like it, some (constructive) feedback is appriciated.
The RBT are not ready yet as you can see, but it was my month June target and i don't have time to post next week so here are the preliminary pics.
I used magnets on the crew i think thats a nice way to remove the "wounds" from the RBT. And I choose round bases because i think that look beter on a warmachine.
without the models
detail
And the assembling of the SOA (for the dutch a bit akward abreviation )
the bases
With the models

Progress on my dragon.
I had to cut some of his spinal processes to make room for the sadle and the rider.
The base.
I added an extra egg. not sure if i gonnan keep the goblin, maybe change it into a head of a beaby dragon. But for now its gonna stay.
thanks for visiting! till next time.

Re: Peepster PLOG; HE Shadow Army UPDATE 23 JUNE
Hey Peepster,
nice looking plog you've got going here.
So my ogres are going to be killed by SOA's? (for you non-dutch people, SOA means STD) that's kind of strange
what kind of color scheme are you going for with them? I've no idea on their background so I don't know what would be normal or not. paint one and show us please.
keep up the good work
