High Elf Names

#1 Post by cidracin »

I was wondering if there was any reasoning behind the naming of High Elves. Is it like Tolkien where his characters names are based on Elvish languages? Is that the way elves are named in the fluff or are elves are just given names thier parents like? Seeing how GW never created an elven tounge I guess GW just makes the names up. I just thought it would be helpful for RPS and fluff writing to have a feel for Asur names.

Does anyone have a list of common Asur names, male and female?

I have a question for the members of Ulthuan: How do you name your Asur characters?

On one of the previous locations of the forum there was a compilation of all the names used by GW and from Tolkien and some other places. I have it on my PC but it is currently on repairs. I am 100% sure Eldacar or Calarion also have it saved somewhere.

Try to figure out which tradition and/or culture you want to base it on, whether Tolkien, Celtic or whatever, and then be consistent.

Time to analyze them a bit - I think that's a big enough list for now!

I think we find a few common aspects in High Elven names. First off, we have common suffixes. I think it's fair to assume that for one declension of nouns, the suffix is "-ion/-ielle" for masculine/feminine - let's call that First Declension. I think it's fair to say a prefix of "Bel" is also fairly common, probably meaning something like "Great".

It's also pretty easy to see that there's certain common elements in names. For instance:

ANAR-ion
Alith ANAR

Which would approximate the Asai and Onai, the various letters. Anyone think that these don't function much like kanji - ie, one symbol per concept? In other words, my name in elvish would probably be written with two, or possibly even one letter:

CALAR (one) + ion (suffix, which may be a separate symbol, or may be a modification of the Calar symbol denoting 'masculine entity'.

Which means the next question is, what are (looking at some of those names) some of the common Asur terms for names, as well as other suffixes and declensions?

From the 5th ed army book, we get the following (from names only):

AENAR ASTAR BEL CARAD ELTHAR HATH FINU KOR TYR

And the suffixes -or, -is

What else is there?

Kaelis Starglaive
Lathien Turithas
Ardäer Silvermoon
Ashnari (male)
Valianol (female)
Farinar (male)
Nirthan (male)
M'naina (female)
Nalthin (female)
Imnorai(male)
Galdith(male)
Ceylín Mineath (M)
Hatisha Minais (F)
Caerntharn (M)
Caerndan (M)
Caladrath (M)
Selenoa (F)
Loryn Stormblade (taken from a Reaper model) (F)
Alem Arhain (M)
Celena (F)
Darinol (M)
Ielthan (M)

My character names are a mix of Quenya and Sindarin Elvish from Tolkien. The names look a little different to the names others on here have given their characters but I spent a lot of time translating my friends and families names and I had to use them ^_^

I've never had problems with naming Elves. :p Then again some names might be a little over the top, like Aelathir when you could go more Tolkienic with Aelath or even Athir.

Check out this:

It takes the names from the WFRP supplements so is kind of "cannon"

I am writing a book very very loosely based on the HE History as to how they are growing fewer. The story starts with an idea to make the elves used in it to grow in number, and I have at least 15 names I came up with for the book.

Talifan is the General of the Elven forces, hence why I chose it as my screen name.
King Reithar
Alyaidron
Aramil
Amanthri
Ivelerost
Lord Evenstar
Lord Favilian
Tanlithan
Velelanost

These are just a few of the names I came up with. As was previously stated, I came up with them using common First letters and made it sound as elvish as possible.

At the stage I am at right now with it I did not. I wanted to get the first of a possible 3 books finished before I came up with the Family names. I do have a few that I got from D&D as ideas so I know it will be a little more difficult, as I want the Family names to have a meaning to them.
