KO's Motivation Page (Updated 11/01/2012) - Colors Question

#1 Post by KarsaOrlong »

Hey Guys,

So I'm going to follow the lead, and the inspiration, of many many talented artists on here and try to live up to the excellence thats posted here every day. I'm new to the modelling aspect of the hobby and I just collected the "last" (more appropriately most recent) part of my army in the mail yesterday evening so I'm now going to officially keep track of all my work on here.

I figured I'd start showing you guys the finer points and key items in my army and then as I finish them post them for critiques and comments. And also suggestions and help when I get stuck with an idea that I can't formulate into a paint job (or green stuffing).

So far I've done very little in the way of conversion (not confident in my skills as of yet) but I've been practicing on some scrap models and I think I'm getting the hang of it so with future pieces, future conversions. :)

So without further ado, here's the first couple pieces that I'm going to work on. And some of the ones I'll attempt later when I get better at painting:

One of the Center Pieces
Image
She's going to proxy as a great eagle until I can create some fluff for her. But Lileath's Chosen (screw Teclis) seems like a nice point for her.

My other Center Piece
Image
Dragon mage anyone? Well eventually, maybe just a Beast Lore and I'll get a dragon for Transformation of Kadon? beats me. Conveniently she's named Chrys Dragontamer..

My third key unit hasn't been assembled yet but she's going to look pretty bad ass too I think. My girlfriend is going to take a crack at the IoB mage and the instant she saw him her mind screamed Red or Purple, so I have plans to tie all of my units into her red mage when she gets him started.

While she's working on that I'm going to take a crack at these ladies:
Image

There is currently a contest on at my local GW for painting any army from any starter set so I think that gives me some motivation to finish my IoB units, which I won't bother putting on here now because I don't have any real conversions done to them and everyone knows what they look like assembled by now (i think). So there should be lots of progress on here for the next few weeks. Thanks guys :D

I think a Beast Mage is a great idea for her.

Good look with the project and keep motivated!

Check out www.frpgames.com she's named Avril. I was thinking I might make a unit of them(her?) but she only has one pose so I stuck with one.

@Tinman: She's got all the firery temper look of a Dragon Mage going on. Maybe her great great granddaddy Dragontamer has very little to do with her nature lol.

But I still like the idea of her turning into a Dragon. Who wouldn't want that. A dragon mage that doesn't ride in on a dragon but becomes one in the middle of a fight haha.

As a side note. I'm having horrible luck with my metal figures staying together. Anyone have any suggestions to help strengthen the glues hold?

I struggled with Citadel superglue for years before switching to commercial brands with much greater success.

For large metal parts you may need to pin.

^^ This helps a lot. While I like most GW products, their glue is absolute rubbish. Getting a commercial brand makes a big difference here.

Other things you can try:
- wash your metal models in soapy water. Sometimes the mold-release agent sticks to the model and this prevents the glue from sticking properly
- don't use too much glue. Superglue doesn't stick to superglue very well.
- If you keep having trouble, put a (very) small bit of greenstuff between the two metal halves. Superglue is much better at sticking metal bits to greenstuff then it is at sticking metal bits together...

Thanks a bunch guys. I'll attempt this stuff when I get home. While my winged Elf maiden looks spectacular its a huge pain when her wings fall off and then her hand follow suit.. :?

Another question then. If i'm having issues with weight balancing, her wings pull her backwards all the time, is there a way to counterbalance them somehow? Without her looking like rubbish?

Earth Magnet the bottom of her base. Get that rubber sheet or perhaps a thin sheet of sheet metal for the movment tray. I have 8 magnets on the bottom of my Doombull, I can turn him upside down on his movment tray. That might work for you.

I wouldn't do anything fancy with magnets. Just put a chunk of lead (or a cut up quarter, the tabs you get off metal models, etc) on the underside of the base. If she's tipping backward, put it on the front.

Ok well this weekend was a complete painting failure :? but not without reason. I finally settled on a color scheme (I used pencil crayons and a the GW template to test some out) and began progress on my test model before being distracted by work for the rest of the weekend. On the plus side, I ended up doubling my existing Elven force on the weekend. I got a great deal from a guy selling his elves. I got two great eagles, 8 silver helms, 16 spears, 16 archers, and a prince and noble for dirt cheap. I also got the first 1000pts or so of an Asrai army. :D

The WE army is painted up in an autumn theme and looks awesome but the guys techniques are where I'm going to really pick up I hope.

Anyways, hopefully going to finish my test model tonight and start on the IoB stuff.

Ok so I've made some progress but as you'll in see not really in the direction I needed to . But not a big deal really. Let me know what you guys think as always :).

These guys are my wood elves. I kept the theme of the guy I bought them from.
Image

And five of my spearelves (really tempted to dig up my empire halberds and change their weapons :?. But they're missing their highlight layers, Lighter blue for the trim and brighter purple for the cloth. I think I'm mostly done with the boots and spear hafts. Need to highlight the armor, and pick out any gems in red.

Re: KO's WiP Motivation Page (Progress, some finished models!)

#17 Post by KarsaOrlong »

Hey Guys,

So late last night (when I shoulda been sleeping haha) I finished up 5 of the spear models I'd been working on. I wasn't overly impressed with my painting abilities when I first started. Things looked sloppy and unfinished constantly. However, I'm pretty pleased with the finished model. I think I really captured what I was trying for. It's still going to take a lot of finesse to get to the level I'd like to be at, but these guys are definitely tabletop ready :D

I feel these guys will have a fairly dynamic pose as they rank up. These five models already look like they're ready to meet anything (arrows, swords and stunty dwarves.

I don't like the Helm, when I incorporate some females into my army I'll probably be going for Redbox Games stuff, Tre Manor has some very nice elves.

Careful of the Redbox mini's. They look very cool, but they are out of scale to the GM mini's (and most other's we might use). I ordered 4 and was very disappointed about the size. They are about 25 mm...

I agree with Tinman. Red Box is significantly underscaled. This is especially a problem for character models.

Well I've made some more progress. I finished a second rank of my spearelves. Only 17 to go  Finished the command group too. Let me know what you think of them. They don't really pop but I thought they'd be ok. Ignore the hair I haven't mastered that technique yet.. :?

Image

Image

I also received this guy in the mail today. I'm thinking I want to kit bash a center piece model using him. Not sure on rules or anything yet but I figure he'd look pretty bad ass done up in a full armor kit.

Image

I mounted a pair of legs to show the fit. Unfortunately the noble kit legs and silver helm legs don't quite fit right. I could heat them up and bend them I suppose. Its just the skirt that screws it up. Or green stuff something... Hmm
