Calyrn's Paint log Updated with Shadow Warriors

#1 Post by Calyrn »

Yep, 166 models assembled and painted :D It took a few years I finished just in time for new models to show up  so i guess I'm done painting High Elves until October #-o now i just have to finnish my Lizardmen (27 left), Beastmen(37 left), and Ogres(2 left). Really this is just a little wooo hooo post.

I think the general consensus on a thread like this is, "PICS OF GTFO!"

These are fantastic. I registered for the express purpose of replying to this thread. I really like your color choices - these models capture the "ancient and otherworldly" feel that elves should have. I'm new to Fantasy and just starting High Elves, and this is a great inspiration to me.

Wow, thank you  ancient and otherworldly is exactly the feel I was going for. This is the best forum for High Elves you will find anywhere, most people here know way more then I do. I'd love to hear your plans, starting an army is fun.

have to share my take on the elven skin later just on a lunch break, :( back to work I go.

The skin colour choice is to reflect an infusion and connection to the flow of the winds of magic. Being as Ulthuan is the centre of magical flow, I felt my Elves should have a more otherworldly feel to them, less fay, more ethereal. Every Elf has a connection to magic as the fluff states so I felt the purple wash gave that "magically infused" feel I was looking for, It looks better with white Than flesh tones, even paled down flesh did not look right. I started these guys about 8 or 9 years ago, if I were to re do them now I'd go with a blue wash, with softened bleach bone to white for cloth with shades of gray. I considered blue wash flesh the first time but didn't like it with the turquoise.
Thanks for all the comments guys :D

Very Dynamic! I also like how it looks darker than most high elf armies.

This army really is something else. In a very good way :)

Would you mind sharing how you did the blue cloak for the eagle-rider? And also what kind of flock you used. Regular stuff or did you colour it yourself?

The blue for the eagle riders cloak is the same mix as for my Shadow Warriors. To keep them all tied to the rest of the army I blended the existing colours. Hawk Turquoise mixed with Shadow Gray for the base, and I blended up in tone by adding space wolves gray. The underside is Shadow gray blended up with space wolves gray. As for the flock, it's a mix of a store bought autumn flock, and some saw dust that dyed myself, with a NGR woodfinishing dye.

Thank you, funny you should mention more pics, I have a week off from work so i was planning on snapping a few this week! But I think I have to change the title of the thread, my boys got me the Island of Blood for Christmas :D :D :D
So Alathenar wants more Pheonix pics
commander what model do you want to see? Which one do you mean by "Assassin" ? Ask any questions you want I'll try to answer.
Edited for completeness

Ah, in the second picture, on the right of the banner which has a picture of a dragon. Also the picture underneath that one with the unit of shadow warriors, who is the guy on the right? Were they old models, or did you construct them yourself.

By the way, i must complement your effort. It takes me so long to paint, its hard to get started.

Could you please tell what bits you used for the BSB as I would like to make something very similar, just with a smaller banner and a bow.

They are made from Wood Elf bits, High Elf bits and green stuff. the one beside the BSB is actually the same fellow riding the eagle. Back in the day he was for when the Eagle died, he's clutching a wounded shoulder. Same bits for the guy below. My Shadow Warrior units consist of a mix of the old medal SW, and some WE conversions.

Thank you, it took years, I started when my first son was born, he's almost ten now
Arthon wrote:nice painting btw how many pts is this army?
If it were to be fielded as all models it comes in at about 8000pts, but at 25% core it would muster 6000pts. However I run a variety of lists based of different themes using different models from the pool.
Giladis wrote:Could you please tell what bits you used for the BSB as I would like to make something very similar, just with a smaller banner and a bow.
Giladis, love your work. The BSB is made up of a few bits, the legs, the pole and banner are from the chariot kit, both the arms are archer arms, the sword on the belt, the head, and the hand holding the banner are from spearmen. The falcon was a bit I had around, I think it was a Reaper, and was on a small tree branch. Can't wait to see what you makes.

I going to have to try convert myself on of those. That wounded guy looks truly awesome.
And the freehand dragon. Wow.

Would you be able to take a close up of the swordmasters? (Sorry, i never got a email saying you replied to this thread!)
