Wamphyri101's Guardians of Chrace

#1 Post by wamphyri101 »

Hi guys,

Will be putting some pics up of my army soon (when I can actually get some daylight in Scotland to take them)

The Army is based on a force of the Phoenix Gate.

Background:

The Anla’Shok
Asur of the Phoenix Gate

The battle field was strewn with the bodies of her fellow Asur, the blood so thick it swamped the once fresh grass around her feet. The power of the darkness that now surrounded her was so intense she could feel it crawling under her skin.

Illandria, battle mage of the Phoenix gate, used her staff for support as her weak body began to fail from the wounds she had suffered. She began to weave one last spell to try and hold the vile force at bay, ignoring the wounds that tired to claim her life. With the last of her energy, she screamed above the manic cackling of the horde the final words to complete the spell.

But nothing happened.

With her concentration now broken, Illandria now felt the mailed glove that clasp her shoulder. Its owner’s blade thrust into her chest and slowly twisted. Her legs collapsed as blood flowed from the wound as the surrounding darkness finally closing in the claim her soul.

Illandria woke with a scream; the vision had been so real she could feel her chest burning with pain where the blade penetrated her. Grabbing her robe from the nearby table she made her way out of her room and into the cold night’s air of the gateway. She stood staring out at the night’s sky and she tried to centre herself. Was this an omen of things to come or a powerful nightmare? The recent reports had seemed to display no sign of enemy activity, but the vale between reality and the chaos realm was ever weakening and many creatures of the old world had a way of hiding there presence until they were ready to show themselves.

Illandria sent a mental command to Adrial, captain of the gate, to join her on the lower north walls.

As she walked down the stairs of the outer wall, her eyes moved over its battlements, watching the bolt thrower teams performing the defence drills with their precious killing machines. Units of city guard, warriors armed with bow and spears also covered the walls. Even at night the Phoenix gate was ready for battle.

At the bottom of the north wall she saw Adrial, resplendent with in his dragon armour and carrying his legendry Reaver bow, staring out towards the forest. Adrial turned to her and nodded his head in greeting and said “good evening lady Illandria, to what do I owe this, early greeting” enhancing the sarcasm with wide yawn. Illandria smiled at his usual display of good humour “Lord Adrial, I feel I must report a change in the winds of magic. Something is amiss and I can feel a powerful darkness approaching”. Adrial turned back to the forest “I too feel something is wrong. Ethril and his shadow warriors have not reported in yet and they never report late. I will double the guard and recall the huntsmen. I am glad that Nagan arrives today from his summons to Tor Achare. It will be good to have his warriors amongst us again”.

Illandria let out a small sigh of relief at this news. She thanked Adrial and walked back towards her room. She had not felt The Phoenix gate was as safe since Nagan and his white lions had been summoned to the Chrace capital. Having them return would make the gate far more formidable. With luck, Nagan would arrive soon and the shadow warriors would return soon, encase her vision was real. Now all she could do was wait, and prey.

………………………………………………………………………………..

Nagan rode at the front of his warriors. The summons to Tor Achare had proven to be a most interesting trip. His long service to Chrace had earned him a promotion to banner bearer of the Phoenix Gate, and lord Korhil had deemed him fit to be supplied with additional troops. A gleaming new Lion chariots accompanied his column of white lion warriors, as well as a unit of Lion Princes, fearsome warriors mounted on great lions. They had also been joined by a unit of the fabled sword masters of Hoeth on there way to bring updated information to the mages of the Phoenix Gate.

With these warriors, Lord Korhil had hoped that the Phoenix gate would be more secure in these dark times, and Nagan was confident that they would be ready to face any threat that may befall Ulthuan.

………………………………………………………………………………

Ethril ducked as another shot imbedded itself to the branch where his head had just been. Turning and firing his own bow, hitting his enemy square in the chest and knocking it off its feet. His warriors had been running for 4 hours now and the pursuit had taxed them to their limits. Earlier tracks had been found in the far north and Ethril was adamant in investigating before returning to the gate. Originally what was thought to be a band of raider had turned out to be an entire war-host, ready to march on The Phoenix gate. They had left immediately to report when the enemy patrol had found them. He had already lost 5 of his best Shadow warriors and prayed that at least one of them would get to the Phoenix gate to bring warning to Lord Adrial to prepare for the coming horde. In the distance, Ethril could see the gate, strengthening his resolve and giving him the energy to continue on. Readying another arrow he ran onwards.

People and places
Tor Achare:
Capital of Chrace

Phoenix Gate:
One of the 5 Ancient gateway created by Calador the conqueror, to protect the borders of Ulthuan from the threat of Dark Elf invasion. The Phoenix gate boarders with Chrace, Averlorn and Nagarythe.

Lord Adrial:

Adrial was not of noble birth though constant training he became a recognised
as a member of Averlon’s militia. After years of service to the Everqueen he became one of her courts guardians.

Adrial was one of many warriors who rally to Lord Eltharions’ call for reinforcements to battle the vile goblin warlord, Grom the paunch. Adrial proved himself as a master bowman amongst his piers and when the captain of his company was slain by a stray doom diver, Adrial took command.

After the battle Adrial was commended on his skill at leading his fellow Asur and was made permanent commander of a company of Avelorn militia and was gifted with the legendary Reaver bow by Eltharion himself.

Over hundreds of years Adrial expanded his military skill and rose through the ranks of command, becoming Captain of the Phoenix Gate seven hundred years after its completion.

Nagan, Battle Standard of the Phoenix Gate:

Nagan is the son of Dural, who was one of the white lion hunters who saved Calador the first from Malkieth assassination attempt. Nagan was raised in his fathers image and truly has the heart of a lion.

When the druchi raiding fleet surprised attacked the Phoenix gate, Nagan was one of fifty white lions who charged out against their hated kin, buying Tor Archare enough time for its mages to counter the foul sorceress of the druchi's dark magic. Nagan was one of the few warriors to survive the gambit. Found half buried under the corpse of a monstrous hydra. Nagan was awarded with a suit of Dragon armour for his courage as well as the helm of fortune, gifted to him by Lord Bravery.

For many years he aided in the defence of the Phoenix gate, leading his own unit of white lions, survivors of Durchi raid who refused to join other companies.

After recent successful campaigns and doubtless proven loyalty, Nagan has been given the honour of becoming the battle banner bearer of the Phoenix gate. He now rides to war on the back of a great lion, gifted to him by Korhil himself.

Lady Illandria:

Illandria was born in the dark lands of Nagarythe. Her whole household were butchered by the Druchi during Malkieth last invasion attempt on Ulthuan. Illandria was found and rescued by a band a shadow warrior who had arrived to late to aid the battle, finding her hidden within a seller clutching a strange amulet. The shadow warriors took her under their wing, teaching her the ways of war and stealth.

Illandria spent the rest of her youth, working with the shadow warriors as a spy, using her Nagarythe looks to pass off as a Druchi. As she grew older, Illandria found she was touched by magic. The leader of the shadow warriors, Ethril, used his influence and contacts to allow Illandria to pass through the lands of Ulthuan to Hoeth, to learn from the mages of the white tower.

Over a decade she studied in the ways of magic under the watchful eye of Archmage Belandural. During her time at the tower she learnt many different paths of magic, as well as learning that the heirloom she was found with was actually a magical amulet called the Jewel of the Dusk.

After Leaving the White tower to explore her own path for a time, She found her way to the Phoenix gate where she was reunited with Ethril and his warriors. The lord of the Phoenix gate was happy to have another mage under his defence and Illandria has resided at the Phoenix gate while continuing her studies.

Wow, I like your DPs/lion riders! You really did a good job posing the riders...everything looks very seemless and appropriate. And that banner on your character...f-ing amazing  ! When Luna sees this he's gonna freak :P .

My one criticism would be the stone wall in front of your one RBT. Don't get me wrong, the idea of barriers in front is a neat one, and they actually look pretty cool, but the stonework and tombstone on the one don't look appropriate for Ulthuan. If these guys are stationed at the Phoenix Gate, you might want to find something less human and more elven.

Awesome work overall, though. I'm jealous :D .

Cheers guys. Have many more high elf models but these are the main ones im using atm

Was inspired to put some pics up as I was blown away by some of the armies I have seen on the pages and would love to paint as well as many of them.

The model is from Kabuki models: http://www.kabukimodels.com/index.php?go=produkt&id=9
For Skin we used black undercoat then thinned dwarf flesh followed by a mix of elf flesh with some bleached bone. IT was then highlighted with a even lighter mix of white, elf flesh and bleached bone and then finised with a little wash (I think, will have to check with my character painter who is a friend called andy meecham)

They have some other goodies on the kabuki site also.

The banner was inspired by a picture I found awhile ago online. A friend stenciled it and then we painted over sections to raise the colour. Glad people like it! I have scaned the Prepainted version as a banner if you want I could add it to the banners section?

The dragon princes/lion riders were a useful way to play with my silver helms. So the bodies /arms are mix's of silver helms with lion chariot parts (now have 3 spare tiranoc chariots I need to make)

current project is changing the white lions to plastics (front rank about done) then a new Adrial model which is a conversion of like 4 models and bits, and bows for the bolt throwers (the bases for them are seperate from the stands photod. I am working on something more elven instared of a brick wall :)

Brilliant army, especially Nagan's banner! Did you draw it on with a pacer before painting it?

The bowstrings on the archers and shadow warriors: An awesome touch.
Illandria: A lovely unique piece.
The new White Lion (I'm assuming that he's the Guardian?): Looks great, definitely a way to go!

The White Lion Princes:    Oh my God they're effin' unbelievable! The most beautiful thing I've ever seen in an army of Ulthuan and quite possibly the coolest minis ever! If only I'd have extra WLC bitz I'd do a whole bunch of those guys, but unfortunately, all three of my new chariots are the White Lion variant (huh, never thought that I'd call that unfortunate) so that's not going to happen. Unless one of you guys has any extras lying about? Guys?

And the banner on Nagan is just...wow. It's the finest banner I've ever seen in my life. Nevermind the fact that it's ludicrously oversized, IT HAS A FRIGGIN' ROARING LION ON IT! The banner could probably pick itself up and move itself around, even without the Chracian noble to do it for it.

You sir, have the official Luna Guardian's Seal of Approval (I really need to get someone to do that. Anyone good with a photoshop? Send your submissions to renesanssi89@hotmail.com so I can start handing those out to the select few who meet the criteria)

Quite possibly, the ONLY problem with the army is the lion paint job. They're supposed to be white lions, not golden lions, but that's really just a minor detail that's easily overlooked.

Overall score for the army: Godlike

Thank you very much for the comments. Very very kind from so many people with Awesome looking armies.

Reason the reason I didn't go for "white" lions was I wanted to put a different spin on the whole white lion theme (ie the name "white lion" as in good/pure/noble like Aslan in Narnia) and have the lions more lion looking.

Will try and get some of my other bits at some point (Like my dragon, phoenix guard and other bits)

Have an Orc and goblin army painted as well but waiting on new stuff for them next month and one day a decent rule book!

Your work is amazing! That banner
There is something about your archers, I dont't know if it's the freehand or maybe the bowstrings but they look more elegant and taller than they normally do.
What's Tyrion doing without his horse, Malhandir is a better model than Tyrion IMO so it's a shame to waste the horse.
And a dragon... Luna won't be happy

lol well in the last year I have probably used the dragon and the Phoenix guard once!

The archers...might just be the bow strings (Fishing line +black paint and ALOT of patience...they are bloody annoying). Still need to practice doing some little runs so I can pop then down the robes.

And I do have tyrians horse somewhere! Its just sadly not painted yet (my goblin army got in the way)

Caradryan: Very nice. Well done.
Phoenix Guard: I've always liked these. Good job :D
Teclis: Meh, never really liked him. Also, the pure-blue colourscheme is a bit dull.
Tyrion: A neat job. I even like the horse.
The Reavers: A good job, I especially like the bow :)

I think that's all, right? Wait, what's this?

For my main army I use mainly white/blue when I can (Alot of older models are being changed under this new colour process)

As for the rest, I like them to look different. My army isnt like that of the empire which is a payed army with uniform. The army is made up from different areas of Ulthuan so wanted that to reflect a little

The new Adrial as he stands now. Still need to have something done on his cloak and other bits. Will also replace his base as I am adding small magnets so he can ride the dragon also.

Model I found on ebay. Replaced the head with one from the lion chariot. Sword is made from 3 different high elf blades. Cloak was a empire one and griffons are from empire set (When the new plastic griffon comes out he will be riding that also)

Hmm...he's well-painted, but for me he looks a bit too much like an elven head on a human warrior-priest. The shield especially looks a little too gothic.

That’s Kind of what he was to be at first. I had an empire army and was converting up a War Altar and he was to be the Priest riding it. The theme for the Army was "Ambassadors to Ulthuan" where alot of the army would be Elven looking. The Steam tank was going to have war damage on the sides that are "patched" to make it look like they don’t have a empire workshop to work with.

Got scrapped though due to lack of time/funds.

I still have work to do on him so the shoulders are to be changed

Nice looking army you've got there :)
I just have a question regarding the Lion Princes. The legs are from the silver helms kit right, how well do they fit on the lion's bodies?
