Alain reined Aurora in, he eyed the Knights suspiciously, "I'm a Knight of Salisbury, I seek to visit the city of Bath, on personal business." He reply was a croak, evidently his throat and mouthed were thirstier than he'd allow himself to admit or realise.

"Personal business?" one of the knights asked. "We will take you to Bath, so you can explain your 'personal business' to King Cadwy."

Upon hearing of Sir Alain's assent, the three knights wheeled in and fell into step with him, cantering along the road towards Bath. Having decided that Sir Alain was not a threat, the knights began to chat casually with him as they rode. Just as Salisbury had been raided by Sir Rhisiart Blains of Levcomagus, Somerset had been raided by the Irish repeatedly. "It's good that we've solidified our friendship with Salisbury," one of the knights remarked. "Next time those Irish curs attack, we'll be able to kick them back to their miserable islands!"

After a short time, the group reached the edge of the forest. From here, it was a short ride across the plains, with the mighty Avon River an azure strip across the landscape, to reach the ancient town of Bath. Onion would truly love to visit Bath, for many of the ancient Roman structures were still standing. One of Sir Alain's escorts explained that the town had been known as Aqua Sulis, the Waters of the Goddess Sulis, by the Romans. The bath-houses that they had built still stood, and the knight recommended that Alain visit them if his business gave him the time.

Soon, Sir Alain was welcomed into the hall of King Cadwy. Although he was called King, in truth his kingdom was smaller and less powerful than Salisbury, and his hall far simpler, though still full of courtiers. "Sir Alain, son of Sir Pedivere, of Salisbury!" the herald cried out to announce him.

There was a startled and familiar cry, and then many people began talking at once. Through the crowd, Sir Alain could see the beloved face of Adelle. She was white as a ghost, and lying on the floor: for when Sir Alain had been announced, she had fainted dead away.

Alain faltered in his resolve for a moment, wrestling a gasp within his throat, forcing it down deep, he fought himself sheering up his resolve. Alain held fear though, greater fear than he felt at Dover, a misstep would bring all his plans to ruination and during the three days he rode he formed many many plans.

Several handmaidens, as well as an older man of about sixty, hurried to Adelle's side, picked her up, and hurried her from the court. King Cadwy looked perturbed. "An ill omen," he said, and then coughed. He was a pallid and sickly looking man, and he spoke softly, as the Earl did - but the Earl's tones spoke of the confidence that he would be listened to, whereas King Cadwy's spoke of weakness of body and of spirit. "Come, who is this Sir Alain who approaches under such signs? Come, come," he said, gesturing for Alain to approach.

Alain hesitantly stepped forward again, his rage was beneath the surface, held in check out of necessity but it was ever present and bubbled forth beyond his control, his gait initially uneven, levelled out as he strode forward.

"I bid," Alain paused clearing his throat of the stubborn croak he endured, "my apologies, your majesty, I bid you thanks for your kind and generous welcome to your court. Indeed, if I may, likewise welcome you in return for your continued and future friendship between Salisbury and Somerset. It is in that spirit that I journeyed here today, for it was unfortunate that I was away from home when this friendship was forged. When I heard the joyous news upon my return from Dover, I journeyed here with all haste, for not only were our two people joined together, my dear friend Lady Adelle, was wedded. It was my intention to visit your fine kingdom to congratulate her and present her with a gift. It was my hope I could present her with it."

"Strange that your friend should faint at hearing your name," King Cadwy mumbled. "Yes, by all means. When she is recovered, you may see her. The friendship between Somerset and Salisbury pleases me as well. Until then, please, enjoy my hospitality."

The elderly man re-entered the hall as the King spoke, and stared intently at Sir Alain, but made no motion to stop him as Sir Alain waited. An hour later, a page came to Sir Alain and bowed. "The King wishes to inform you that Lady Adelle is awake and will receive you now," he said, his voice breaking with the awkwardness of adolescence. Sir Alain followed him into a quiet chamber with a large wooden bed. Adelle sat up in it, with pillows propped behind her. A maiden sat beside her quietly. "Alain, what are you doing here?" she asked.

"Leave us please, maiden." Alain spoke severely at the young girl, making his intent clear. It was with equal intensity that he intently followed her from the room with his eyes. With the creak of the door closing he turned, his expression and face softening. "I would think its plainly evident what I'm doing here," he spoke softly and gently "I came as soon as I heard, as soon as I returned from Dover. Roderick and Elad have likely sent the entirety of Salisbury to arrest me. I came...I came to let you know that I will tear this kingdom asunder, the entirety of Briton if necessary, should they further endeavour to keep us apart." He weakly reached out to Adelle, with the gift he brought back from London.

Emotion flickered across Adelle's face - surprise, pleasure, love - and then settled into tired depression. "Alain, stop talking nonsense. I'm married. Yes, I love you and always will. Yes, I want to run off with you and have adventures like we did before. But there comes a time when we have to put what we want behind us and do what's expected of us." She pushed the necklace which Alain had presented her with away. "Go home and leave me alone, Alain."

Alain recoiled, staggering backwards a few paces. Equal measures of rage and depression welled up, in despair his eyes wandered around the room, looking, seeking desperately for something anything. For all his grand plans, his plots he never had stopped to consider Adelle's reaction being anything other than complicity. In his despair he hurled the necklace with all his might at the wall, shattering it into pieces. The world was swimming, he staggered back further, grasping at the door desperately he staggered away; away from Adelle. He had been undone, not by the hordes of Saxons, Picts or any other Warrior, but by the love of his life.

"Alain," Adelle sobbed as he reached for the door. She had begun to cry; tears rolled down her face. "Alain, I'm pregnant."

A week after they departed Salisbury, Earl Roderick sent a summons to Sir John, Sir Aldrydd and Sir Tinian. "Sir Lycus returned from Somerset," the Earl said somberly. "It appears that Sir Alain was consumed by jealousy and desire and rode to Somerset to confront the Marshal's daughter. Apparently, when she rejected him again, his mind snapped. Sir Lycus' patrol saw him fleeing Bath into the swamps, laughing hysterically. They lost him in there. King Cadwy was outraged, and I have had to make several concessions to him as a result of this. I do not know what I'll do to him for this. But more than that, I do not know if Sir Alain will ever regain his sanity, or if we shall ever see him again."

Aldrydd's face was wide with shock and disbelief at the Earl's words. "Alain has lost his mind? Have you summoned us back here so soon because you wish us to simply give us this news or to track down Alain? Or do you have some other purpose in mind for us?" Aldrydd said while still try to overcome his shock at the news.

Aldrydd
After being dismissed by the Earl Aldrydd returned to Winterbourne Stokes spent the rest of the year there, at least until the Earl's winter court gathering. Some time after Aldrydd's return the Earl came to visit Aldrydd for a short while and Aldrydd did his best to make the visit an enjoyable one for the Earl. A dispute was brought before Aldrydd a couple of weeks after the Earl's departure from the estate. A poor farmer claimed that a rich beautiful widow had insulted him verbally. Aldrydd felt that the farmer was not lying and so decided in his favor. That year one of Aldrydd's cousins was dubbed a heretic to his shock.

He spent most of his remaining time training and working on maintaining his estate. One day he decided to have sex with a particuarly pretty peasent girl. This later proved troublesome as she proved to be with child. Aldrydd decided to acknowledge the child as his own for he could not bear to watch his only child live a peasent's life on his very own estate and watch that child grow up resenting him. The child was born very late in the year and Sir Aldrydd welcomed his first son into world. Aldrydd decided to name the baby James. The child would remain with his mother and the rest of the peasent's until he no longer needed his mother for feeding. Until then Aldrydd visited the child often, for he had found to his suprise, that he loved the child dearly despite his bastard origins. The visits were akward though for Aldrydd felt no amount of love for James' mother. Though he was always kind to her and saw to it that she and the child lived better than Winterbourne Stokes' other peasents.

As a result of the past year's events Aldrydd became more lustful, worldy, deceitful, and vengeful then he had been previously. Though this year he also found himself to have become a more just person. This year's harvest was escpecially good aand Aldrydd lived as a Rich Knight for the first time. Perhaps due to benefits of the plentiful harvest all of Aldrydd's horses survived. This year Aldrydd also practiced practiced blade work with singular devotion and as a result became even more skilled with his weapon of choice.

OOC: the child was unexpected though at least Aldrydd now has a heir if he dies :D

Alain slowly became aware of the world again. His eyes scanned around the room, hoping to spark a mote of recognition. Failing, he reclined back slightly, his eyes glazing over as he searched inwards for answers. Reaching further and further back, past missing memories, he recalled London, Dover...Adelle. Sighing heavily he buried his head in his hands, as he sought to escape once more even if only in his mind he realised he happened upon revelation. He was witness to the end of things, things that had not happened. But how?

Alain rose to his feet unsteadily, he took careful first steps. A sheen of white light blinded him as he left his cave. As his eyes readjusted, Alain surveyed the world he had returned to. He needed to go home.

Tinian Winter Phase

Following the Earl's orders, Tinian returned to Steeple Langford to oversee the management of his estates. He observed carefully how his peasants worked and how the estate prospered, finding himself understanding both of these better. The estate yielded only an average harvest, but enough that he was comfortable, and enough to provide for his needs, including the care of his horses. He was surprised by a visit from the Earl himself, on his circuit.

Reflecting on the past year, he found that he was both more generous and more suspicious and also that he knew more about siege warfare, faerie lore, and affairs of court (intrigue) then he had before. He also felt he had grown harder over the year, more durable. He spent some time working on his skill with the lance.

Although he did not get a chance to return to Winchester he remained faithful to the thought of Katelynn, and did not see another woman. He did send her a letter, which he heard had been received favourably.

John's Winter Phase

John spent his winter living at his new estate in Pitton, to better know his lands. There, he was visited by the Earl, who was on his rotations, and learned much about court intrigue. He also watched his peasants closely, and had Liana help to teach him in stewardship. He also resolved a dispute between a local man and a priest. Despite a bribe, John felt he could not be unjust to a man of the cloth, and resolved the issue as fairly as he could.

Whilst one of his manors prospered, the second one suffered from a food shortage. However, by distributing his excess crop, John was able to keep his family and his peasants fed for another year.

He realised that the adventures of the past year had made him more generous, proud, trusting, courteous, religious, and far more capable at Siege warfare.

John was disappointed to learn that he would not be expect a son of his own in the course of the next year, but he was careful to raise Aurelian as he hoped Gaius would approve of. John's mother remarried during the winter as well.

John fame and glory, combined with a thorough training regime vastly improved his skills with a sword, making him a far more fearsome opponent.

487 AD

As Sir Alain returned to Salisbury, recovered from his madness after his strange oracular vision, other news reached the county, of the campaign against the Saxons in Caercolun. Prince Madoc's raiders had caught a large number of Saxon looters off guard and slain them. Learning of this success, Duke Lucius of Caercolun sallied out with his army to confront the Saxons; however, the battle went poorly and Duke Lucius was slain. King Aethelswith declared himself the King of the East Saxons, and began to call his name Essex accordingly, before leading his army inland. King Uther sent his bodyguard, Sir Brastias, with an army to ward off the Saxon advance. They met in a single indecisive battle and then the Saxons turned back for the winter.

Sir Alain's return was met by the Earl, whose fury had now had time to abate. Although he considered casting out Sir Alain, he decided to retain him in his service instead. Sir Alain spent much of the winter serving in the most menial roles, such as guarding Sarum Castle's latrine. The Earl also stipulated that Sir Alain must become married, so that he would forget about Adelle.

But even this news was eclipsed, shortly before Christmas, when word came that King Uther Pendragon and his court were coming to Sarum this winter. Vast preparations were made, and the Earl summoned all of his knights to his winter court to meet with the most powerful men in all Logres.

Tinian provisioned himself for the ride to Sarum, it was less than day's ride. He looked forward to the opportunity to mingle with the full court again, and with the High King himself present, who knew what could happen. Plus it would be a good chance to catch up with John, Aldrydd and Alain, none of whom he'd seen for a few months.

He rode alone, for since Reynold had been murdered he had yet to take on a new squire.

As soon as the Earl's summons reached Winterourne Stokes Aldrydd began to prepare for his journey to King Uther's court. Upon hearing the summons Aldrydd felt both excitement and reluctance at the prospect of returning to Sarum. Excitement for he had yet to see Alain since his return from the wildderness as well as the rest of his friends. Reluctance for he would have to leave his newly born son behind. So it was with mixed feelings that Aldrydd set out towards Salisbury's chief city with only Bruce to accompany him. During the trip Alddrydd wondered whether the Praetor Syagrius and his lovely heiresses would be travelling to Sarum with the rest of King Uthers court. Though he had been busy since his return to his estate, when Aldrydd found time to relax he often thought of the French women he had glimpsed on the ship at Dover and their incredible beauty.

King Uther and his extensive entourage arrived in Sarum a week before Christmas. Sarum Castle was full of men: the King, Prince Madoc, the Dukes and Earls of Logres, and their special guest, Praetor Syagrius, formerly of Soissons. Rumour stated that Syagrius had spent the year visiting the kings of Malahaut, to the north of Logres, and Cornwall to the west, entreating them for aid against the Franks, but had been denied; and so he was back with the King now, whose final decision was still yet to be made.

Rumours also spoke of the bevy of incredibly attractive heiresses whom the Praetor had brought with him as part of his entourage: he was offering their considerable physical and economic charms to those who would follow him back to Gaul. Sir Leo and Sir Lycus in particular were highly appreciative of the beautiful women's presence, but did not feel that the Earl would wish any of his vassals to be committed to such an endeavour. Sir Jaradan also commented upon their beauty, but was not affected by it in the same way, for he reported that his child-bride, Lady Adwen, was now large with child. Their relationship had strengthened as a result of the child, and it was clear that the Earl's champion had truly grown to care for his wife. Meanwhile, Lady Indeg passed away: scurrilous rumours said that she had been worn out after taking yet another young lover.

Amongst the visitors were several faces familiar to the knights. From Hampshire, the knights were less than happy to see the braggart Sir Lethodus, while Sir Tinian was overjoyed to see the sultry beauty of Lady Katelynn amongst the guests. Sir John saw amongst the guests a man he dimly recalled from years past: Evyn, the pagan bard whom the knights had encountered upon the Salisbury Main when they were only squires.

Another familiar face was that of Prince Madoc. The Prince spoke quietly to many knights present, including the four knights from Salisbury. He was intending another raiding mission against the Saxons in the upcoming year; this time, to take part in a naval expedition to wipe out as many Saxon ships as possible.

Also at this time, two of the knights met someone new who would be important to them. Earl Roderick assigned a new squire to Sir Tinian, a boy called Gervais, while Sir Alain met his new wife: an abashed young serving girl from Sarum Castle called Hannah, the daughter of a professional squire. Hannah was middlingly attractive, with tawny hair and green-grey eyes, but she seemed somewhat embarassed by the whole proceedure. She blushed much and spoke little.

ooc: If there's any skills you want to use, you can roll them and start gaining glory for next year! Or, alternatively, you can talk to any of the guests. More soon!

After less than a day’s travel Aldrydd and Bruce reached the city of Sarum. Even though he had heard that King Uther's court was coming to the city he was still shocked to see so many of Britain's most powerful and wealthy gathered in one place. Aldrydd went to court wearing his finest clothes and his shoulder length dark hair loose to hide the fact that now thanks to Coenred he had only one ear. Arrayed as he was Aldrydd cut a fine a figure as any man present, in the hopes of gaining the interest of one of the extremely gorgeous French heiresses. After he was dressed the first thing he did was to talk with his friends Tinian, John, and Alain. Aldrydd jovially told them all about his newborn son with a large smile on his face. Though he was glad to see them all after they had all shared their accounts of what had passed over the previous months Aldrydd excused himself. Since his arrival he had heard that Preator Syagrius kept a close eye on all the French heiresses he had brought with him to court and was allowing no man to court them until they had agreed to return to Gaul with him. Despite knowing this Aldrydd decided to try and see if he could talk to one of them and catch one of the beauties' interest without the praetor's knowledge. Aldrydd spent well over an hour looking for an oppurtunity to converse with one of the heiresses while Syagrius was distracted but no opportunity presented itself. Frustrated and disappointed by his lack of success Aldrydd decided to try and vent some of his feelings by participating in a hunt that was being organized.

OOC: rolled a 14 for intrigue to get one of the heiresses alone but rolled a 10 for hunting. critical sucess :D

Alain parted the crowd, making his way to converse with Sygarrius. "Hail Praetor. How fares your campaign for support."

John mingled with the crowd, having spent time with his friends, catching up with their actions of the winter. He was most pleased to see that Alain had returned to his senses.

Seeing the Bard, Evyn, whom he recognised from his time at Salisbury, He decided to talk to him.

'Hail Evyn. It has been a long time, and I am sure you do not remember me. My name is Sir John of Tisbury. It has been a long time since I saw you at Salisbury. How fare you?'

Finishing his conversation, he to compete in the sword fighting contest, to better show off his new skills and impress the important dignitaries at the court.

OOC: 12 for Sword.
'The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist.'
