Aldrydd was sore from where he had been unhorsed but was proud that he had managed to eliminate one of Sir Lethodus's flunkies and unhorse another.

Edit: Woops didn't know John hadn't told the rest of the group so I changed my post #-o

John informed the others of what he had remembered.

'I don't think we have much choice but to reach the church, hope to give Gaius chirgury, and bring him to Whitchurch. I agree with Tinian, I think the Earl will help us. If we encounter a border patrol, we will have to hope to fight them off... unless you have any objections.'

Aldrydd was glad that John had thought of a place where they could take Gauis though the nunnery was close to Levcomagus. Though he tried his best to show no signs of it Aldrydd was inwardly fearful. He had planned on not going anywhere near that treachorous city and the evil wood that lay near it. At least until he had devised a means to hunt the evil witch that dwelt there. Though he feared the area he would go with the others for Gauis's sake. "I have no objections." he said as calmly and confidently as possible despite his fear.

It was a short ride north-west to Whitchurch. Throughout this time, the knights kept an eye out for any sign of the border guard, but none appeared. It was shortly after mid-day that the knights arrived at the priory. The building itself was very simple, standing on a hill overlooking a small village. Several nuns worked outside, breaking up the ground in preparation to begin planting new crops for the sisters. Before long, the knights had been admitted, after giving their weapons to the porter, to see Prioress Deanne. The Prioress was an older, motherly woman. "Why, you must be Sir Thomas' son," she said warmly to Sir John. "I can see the resemblance clearly. When the Saxons invaded last, your father saved all of us here from the heathens, so we owe him very much. Is he well?"

John bowed low as he spoke to the Prioress, making sure that he took the appropriate actions having entered a holy place.

'I am sorry to say that he has passed away Prioress, he was killed only two years ago at Eburacum, though he fought bravely and with honor. It pleases me to hear you speak of him so highly, though I am sure he did only what he thought right.'

John paused, reflecting on his father briefly, the strong, powerful man who had taught him almost everything he knew.

'I do not wish to impose, but I hoped you could aid us. One of my friends is injured, and we hoped you could care for him so that we can move him to Winchester'

"Sir Thomas is dead? Oh, I shall say a prayer for his soul. He was such a good man..."

The Prioress looked at Sir Gaius: his puffy, swollen face; his two black eyes; his shattered nose; the way he swayed as if any moment he might fall over. "This man is too hurt for him to reach Winchester, my son. He will have to remain here while the sisters care for him. It may be a week or more before he can safely leave."

She paused. "Was it the Saxons who did it? Oh, those heathen devils! Next time you see them, give them a taste of some cold steel for me. They don't like it up them, oh no!" she said, her bloodthirsty words incongruous with her gentle features.

John bowed again, 'very well Prioress, I shall leave him in your capable hands. Do you wish for one of us to remain with him? And I thank you for your prayers'.

He looked slightly shocked at the words of the Prioress, not expecting a woman of God to be so vicious.

'It was not Saxons, but we were set upon on the road while carrying out our Earls wishes. My friend fought very bravely, so I thank you again for helping him.'

"One of your number may stay if you wish, but it is not necessary. Besides, we cannot house men here; you would have to find a place in the village," the Prioress said. "Oh, these are dreadful, lawless times. We shall do what we can for Sir Gaius, and we shall pray for him as well."

'Very well Prioress, if you do not think it is necessary, I will not have them distract you from your duty, though his Squire will stay should the worst happen. I will leave you, as we have some important duties to take care of'

John turned to his fellows. 'Gaius will remain here in the capable hands of the nunnery, we must head to Winchester as soon as possible, to reclaim the Earls gold.' He turned to Gaius's squire. 'Remain in the village, and watch your master. Protect him should he be discovered by Silchester, and find us if anything goes wrong.'

Aldrydd was relieved that they had not encountered any trouble during their trip through Silchester. He was still nervous but had calmed greatly when he found out their route would not take them under the sinister limbs and boughs of Chute Forest. He only hoped that the journey out of Silchester would be as eventless. "Are we going to be entering the city in secrecy or are we going to openly return. For even if the Earl is not against us if the thief is alerted to our presence he will be even harder to track down. If the Earl was a part of this then th return trip will be close to hopless for we could not deal with ten Hampshire knights let alone a city full of them. Not to mention that I killed one of Sir Lethodous companions, even if the Earl is uninvolved he may not be so forgiving of that. I do believe though that our best chance of recovering the money is have Tinian get the help of the Lady Katelynn. Unfortuneately I also think we must go to the Earl for help even though he may be the orchestrator of all this."

The journey back to Winchester took the rest of the day. The knights stopped by the banks of the Test River to wash some of the gore off themselves - appearing as they did, they would be mistaken for brigands by any border guards they encountered. Then they rode south to uncover and confront the thief. Before long, the Salisbury knights were met by the border guard, and escorted south to Winchester. If they had intended to sneak into the city, or make contact with Lady Katelynn first, that would now be impossible. The sun was setting as the knights entered the city again. The citizens were shutting their shops, closing the market, and returning home for dinner. The aroma of food drifted out to the street.

The Earl rose when the knights entered his hall. "My friends, I did not expect to see you again so soon! Come, what has brought you back here with such haste?"

'It is indeed early to return my Lord, and I wish it was under better circumstances. However, on the road we have discovered that the gold we accompanied has been stolen from us, and the only opportunity for that to happen has been during our stay in Winchester. We have returned in the hope of recovering it and finding the thief.'

The court fell silent gradually as people became aware of what Sir John said. Lady Katelynn's dark eyes were fixed intently upon the knights, while Sir Lethodus sneered something disparaging to one of his cronies. Beside them, Sir Tudri looked shocked by their words.

"Who?" the Earl demanded, his emotions visibly boiling inside of him. "Who do you accuse?"

'My lord, we fear it may have been your daughter, Katelynn. Only she and the other prominent members of your court had access to drug our squires and to reach the money. And of them, we do not feel any of them had the motive, or have otherwise... alibis, in our opinions.'

The court erupted into talk as Sir John accused Lady Katelynn of the theft. Nobody had expected this accusation, least of all the lady herself. Katelynn fell back as if physically struck. The Earl's eyes were wide, and his mouth flapped, piscine-like, as words failed him.

Lady Katelynn looked out desperately across the court, and her eyes met Sir Tinian's, conveying horror and betrayal, disgust and loathing. "How could you?" she shouted. "How could you accuse me of this?"

She looked at her brother, whose eyes were narrowed with thought; her father, who still clearly had been surprised so greatly that he could not act, and then shouted over the din. "These knights slander my good name! I am innocent, I swear it! Is there anyone who will defend my honour against these wild charges?"

Tinian looked in outrage at John. He had not been party to this. For himself he was convinced it was Sir Tudri. He stood apart from them but felt it was futile.

"I do not agree with this accusation," he snarled hotly. "Lady Katelynn is innocent. She was with us the whole time the gold could have been stolen. If necessary, I will defend her honor myself."

'The whole time Tinian? Was she with you the night before we left? For she was not with me or the others. If you have more information, I will gladly revoke my claim. But the Earl and his men seem far too noble and honest to have enacted such a move, Sir's Tudri and Sir Dyfed were with as just as much that evening, and they are under the Earls command - I don not think they would act unless he asked them, Alain agrees with me.'

Tinian blushed furiously. "I was not with the lady all night, Sir John," he said. "But have you and Sir Alain pondered what conceivable use Lady Katelynn might have for such a theft? Nay, I say that there is any number of men who would be better served by it. I do not accuse my lord Earl of ordering this, even the highest advisor may act on his own if he sees fit." He stares angrily at Sir Tudri at this, for that is Tinian's own suspicion. "You suggest the men of this court have more honor than the daughter of the Earl? Why, I'll wager my lord would rather you accuse him directly instead of hearing such a thing."

"Nonetheless, if you accuse the lady you will do so against my own sword, or stand down."

Aldrydd groaned inwardly as John accussed the Lady Katelynn of being the thief in front of the Earl and the whole court. Seeing that Tinian was sincere and his attempts to defend Katelynn, Aldrydd decided to try to to prevent any more conflict.
"My Lord I apologize for our rather boarish and oafish manners this day, I am sure Sir John truly does not think that your lovely daughter stole from your own guests and broke your hospitality. I know that there is no excuse for such outrageous allegations but I fear that Sir John as honest as he is was merely stating who could have been behind the theft. Yet again I ask for your forgivenesss for our uncouth behavior after all the hospitality you've shown us. I believe Sir John spoke rashly for our distress is great at the loss of our Lord's gold and the consequences if we fail to recover it.
Isn't that right Sir John." Aldrydd shot John a meaningful look that quite clearly said for John to back down and apologize.

'Sir Tinain, you have not considered why she needs it. The Earl is, as I'm sure he will admit, far from the wealthiest man. Lady Katelynn is the second daughter. What dowry will she have? What gifts can the Earl bestow on her while he is forced to defend his borders?'

He looked sad.

Second daughter? This was news to Tinian, and he looked at Katelynn in desperate appeal. This had to be a mistake. It seemed they were split, and he was thankful that Aldrydd had spoken in Katelynn's defense too. He was so confused but he knew he couldn't believe it of her, not unless there was hard proof.

"How dare you insult me in my own hall!" Earl Arnulf roared, having recovered his equilibrium. "Insulting my wealth, accusing my daughter of immorality with guests as well, and then insinuating that I have another daughter?"

"Sir Tinian, I accept you as my champion," Lady Katelynn called out. "Through trial by combat I know my innocence will be revealed."

"Sir John, one of you will accept this trial by combat to prove what you say, or you will withdraw all allegations against my daughter immediately and leave this court?"

Tinian nodded grimly and set hand to his sword. He did not want to battle his friend but he knew in his heart, and from one look upon Katelynn's face that John and Alain were very wrong. The Earl's words only affirmed it.

"You see?" he said, "The earl has no other daughter. Confound it John, you're wrong. Withdraw your accusation I beg you."

"I accept trial by combat." Alain frowned, he knew that such an eventuality was inevitable, although he had no desire to fight Sir Tinian. Similarly he had no desire to call Earl Arnulf's character or court into such suspicpicion or disrepute, but his loyalty to Earl Roderick was greater, even if that meant that the kind Earl Arnulf would suffer as a result.

A space was cleared for the two combatants. "God will determine innocence and guilt," the Earl said. Lady Katelynn gave Sir Tinian a kiss upon his lips. "Please win, Tinian. For me," she said, and Sir Tinian could see that she was barely able to restrain tears. The two combatants readied their shields and advanced towards one another slowly, swords in hand. Tinian's sword flew with passion and fervour; Alain's with reluctant skill. They struck at each other, and Sir Alain delivered a mighty blow, sending Sir Tinian falling to the ground. Alain advanced upon his friend, but Tinian kicked out, causing Alain to stumble and allowing Tinian to regain his feet. Tinian went on the offensive, raining blows down upon Alain; the other knight withdrew slowly, sheltering himself behind his shield. Wooden splinters flew as Tinian struck at it again and again. Then for a moment the blade lodged in the wood, and Alain heaved his shield to one side, almost tearing the sword from Tinian's hand, and advanced; Tinian barely managed to free his blade in time to defend himself. It was soon apparent that Alain was the superior swordsman, but Tinian's fervour and daring made him an equal match for the other. Swords struck and locked, and this time it was Alain who fell. Forced to one knee, he fought with all of his skill to ward off Tinian's strikes, and managed to force himself to his feet again and withdraw.

The two fighters eyed each other now, panting. For all their fighting, no telling blow had been struck yet. They raced to attack each other once again. First one would gain the upper hand, and then the other. But Alain's strength was clearly starting to fade. After the wounds he had received battling against Sir Lethodus' ruffians, he was slowing. Tinian struck him a sharp blow upon the side of his helmet, which snapped his head around from its force. Sir Alain's eyes rolled back in his head, and he toppled bonelessly to the ground, and Sir Tinian held his blade at the unconscious knight's throat, while the crowd waited for him to deliver the final blow and win the duel...

Tinian paused with his sword still pointed at Alain, who lay prone and unconscious beneath him.

"Lady Katelynn," he began, "Though I have known you but a short time, I know already there is nothing I hold more dear than you. I know you are innocent of my friends' unfortunate accusations. For that reason and for the affection I have for you I had no choice but to defend your honor. Sir Alain is defeated. Aye, I know that by rights I should slay him but I appeal to you my lady, and to you my lord Earl. Show mercy I beg you. This man has twice saved my life. Were it not for him I would have fallen ere ever being knighted, and I would have died upon Mearcred Creek also I fear. I would never have had the pleasure of meeting you, fair Katelynn. I adjure you, do not ask me to sully my honor by slaying this man I call friend and brother. Have I not already proven your innocence?"

"As for you my lord Earl," Tinian continued, "Is there none by whom you would stand fast, no matter how they wronged you? Give me leave to spare him I pray."

Lady Katelynn smiled at Sir Tinian. "I knew that right would prevail. I do not wish my champion to sully his honour now that he has preserved mine."

The Earl's face was darker. "The accusations of these men have impugned against my hospitality," he said. "God has judged, and found that man wanting. By rights, he should die for his preposterous insults against me. Sir Tinian, if you intend to defend the honour of Hampshire, do so, and kill him!"

There was an awkward pause.

"Friendship with Salisbury would be valuable," Sir Tudri said quietly to Earl Arnulf. "If the allegations were withdrawn, then Sir Alain would owe his life to your mercy. He would die for you... for all of us... against the Saxons. Is that not better for Hampshire?"

The Earl nodded. "If Sir John will withdraw his monstrous allegations against my daughter, I will allow this man to live to die against the Saxons, as you suggest. But I want all of you out of Winchester immediately. You are no longer welcome here."

The Earl turned his back upon the knights. Lady Katelynn paused and took Sir Tinian's arms. "Thank you for proving my innocence. Without you, I'd be dead now. Father's angry now - but I'm sure in a year or so he'll allow you, at least, to return. I hope you do." At which point she bestowed upon him a kiss, thoroughly indecent for the middle of court. Sir Tinian's knees were weak when she let go and turned to follow her father.
