Swordmasters vs Chariot

#1 Post by Dzer0 »

My list for Ard Boyz is looking like
Star Dragon
Teclis/Phoenix Guard block
Dragon Princes/BSB/World Dragon/Lion standard
Mage/Spears
Bolt Throwers/Archers/Eagle

I am debating between 9 sword masters or a Lion chariot for my last 140 points

Either unit left out in the open will be dominated by shooting/magic so I would have to play them both very carefully

my immediate thought is that the chariot has much more mobility/fear protection so I am leaning that way

any thoughts?

The Chariot's prime purpose is support, while the Sword Masters are meant to be primary assault units, so it depends on what precisely you think you'll be facing and what you intend to task them with.

This is my thought on the matter:

The Lion Chariot can help the other two DPS units in a pinch but can hover and protect my back line fairly well on its own; a decent supplement or added bonus to every/any other unit if you will.

The Sword Masters are much less flexible yet could guard the back line a little better if that is their only role. I can't imagine running a small group of Sword Masters at the enemy without a reasonable shield so this would leave them to counter assault duties.

The Phoenix Guard are pretty tough, but obviously that is not going to be enough in Ard Boyz so a little extra help is what I am looking at.

Lion chariots are to me the perfect unit to give "a little extra help". Faster than footmen, with narrow frontage for combo charges to the front of the enemy unit. Charge with it first for the fear factor to work best I think. :D

I ran two chariots in my 'Ard Boyz list - and left my 20 painted Swordsman at home (yes I had to buy one of the chariots last week) so I recommend the chariot :)
