Well i decided since two of my housemates are both very much into warhammer that i should give it a go, when i was a lot younger i had a go, but my attention span was not what was required back then. Now i have a much greater drive for it, and hope to eventually build up a descent enough army to play competitively.

So to keep up my momentum for painting over the summer ive decided this should be the best way to keep me going, without losing any drive for the painting. to get myself started i bought the starter box and some mages, so i have:

16 archers
16 spearmen
8 silverhelms
1 RBT
2 mages

considering im not the fastest painter this should keep me busy the whole summer i think.

to start with i decided to go with the theme on the box, which seems to be the common one (blue/white) so gave it a go and resulted in this, which i thought was ok for my first go in about 8 years:
Image

I realised i could probably put a bit more effort in and get a better result so tried again and got to this quality:
Image
There is no shield on the newer one as im now undecided on how to do them yet

After all that effort i then decided that i dont reallycare for that colour scheme as it appears a bit bland and dull, and there is just no vibrancy to it. So ive decided to bring in more gold, on which im attempting to use the NMM effect for the gold as much as i can, and then purple instead of the whites, and so far with this model im extremely happy with the results.
Image

i havent worked out how to take a good photo yet so the purple doesnt seem very obvious, hopefully i can finish the rest of this model which is to be the standard bearer tomorrow.

all C&C appreciated :D

Wow. I love your third model. And you have amazing wood grain and gem effects! I really like them. How did you do the wood grain? It seems labor intensive.

If I had to choose between the three models, I'd go with your thrid scheme. I like that one. The army book color scheme isn't bad, and that's what I did for mine when I started in 6th and I have about 3k painted that way. Now I have my own scheme and its more satisfying to me and its more interesting to lookers on to see something that they haven't before.

thanks, i wasnt sure about doing the wood that way, but it turns out it's a lot easier to do than i thought it would be, simply some bestial brown over the bleached bone, the lining doesnt have to be perfect because wood grain insnt perfect. only takes about 5 minutes :)

annoyingly i still cant seem to take good photos yet, so the colours really dont show through as well as they should, hopefully i'll solve that problem soon.

With the second model (blue and white) I've found giving the metal (especially chain/scale) a watered down blue wash really helps the model stand out.

well ive done a tester of what i think the shield will be like, im not really happy with it, as i clearly got the gold bit wrong, but i think i'll definatly be able to improve on it for future shields. overall im happy though. will save the banners till last and get the rest of the unit finished sharpish.

that's outstanding freehand! =D> Each picture you post seems like a dramatic improvement over the last. Congrats, I can't wait to see a whole unit like that!

well ive been a bit busy so havent been getting as much done as i would have liked, ive been gradually painting the models, and getting them to a level i can accept although the detail hasnt been added to them all yet. this image shows those closest to completion, the faces arent as good as i would have liked as im painting over the previous colour scheme and when i previously painted them i didnt do the skin very well.

Image

i decided while painting that i wanted to try a bit of practice on my NMM technique, so have started doing one model that way and have achived this so far. which im fairly happy with and think i'll be continuing with al the remaining models that i start painting.

Image
Image

i seem to have cropped the pictures a bit much so theyre closer than i would have liked, if you stand further away from the screen i think they look better, id change them but thats too much effort :D

When I started this hobby, a buddy of mine had a Vespero's Vendetta duelist I referred to as Bug-Eyed Joe. Your eyes are fine, I think. Close shots are somewhat misleading as to what the model will look like irl...

yeh the eyes look fine when not looking at it zoomed in, they are something i need to work on though, sure i will eventually get it right, even on close up shots.

I think this army will look fantastic. Just one tip with the eyes which I have found helpful, try to avoid having white all around the pupil as it gives the appearance that the model is staring which for most models isn't the look you're trying to achieve.

Got a bit bored painting the spearmen, so decided to start on something slightly different, and chose to start on the RBT, have just got through most of the first crew member, will just need a few details adding, eyes, gems, then ill sort out the other crew member and the bolt thrower itself; and after that finally sort out some bases for them all.

for eyes dont think of circles, think of lines. horizontal white line, vertical black line and they will look nice and neat.

been a bit busy with returning to unoversity, so havent been painting as much as i would have liked, but have got some done. have got 15 spearmen, "almost" finished, most require gems done, wood grain basing etc, but at least now there is a unit of some sort. have painted the RBT, but not the other crew member, oooops. and have started on the silver helms (only painted the majority of one horse though.

will have pictures up later today i hope, just waiting for camera to charge.

Wow your army looks fantastic  How long have you been painting? I'm really liking the purple and gold scheme but I think its only because your colours are just the right shade. Did you paint over a white basecoat?

thanks for the compliments, used to paint some me when i was younger, must have been about 10-11 years old, been painting these men for the last 6 months-ish on and off. so havent been painting properly that long yet. I'm a bit of a fast learner and perfectionist which combines well in something like warhammer painting :)

painted over black actually, takes a while to get the colour coming out right, i by accident bought the wrong purple and ended up having to mix warlock with blue all the time, but now ive got some liche purple which has sped up the painting process quite a bit. meant to put up pictures but my housemate stole his lamp back, and i need to go buy one now. :?

finally got a lamp, pictures arent the best cos its not a very good lamp, and really i need two if i remember correctly. well anyway PICTURES :o

first is my RBT and its very confused looking crew member. :?

ive never taken a picture of a unit before and dont feel ive done it justice. a large proportion of the men in the unit require finishing off/an arm is missing, and ill get round to that eventually, just a bit bored of spearmen. Oh and as a test of my painting ability try and guess which men are painted with the NMM technique, ill give a clue that there are 2 men. please get it wrong itll make me happy :D

Image
Image

and now what im currently working on, silverhelms. this is the first horse ive done, and im happy with it, but realsie that mould lines/joints are something im going to have to start clearing up as it shows up loads in the pictures. i plan on getting a rider done this weekend so i can have one completed silver helm.

That's almost a perfect old-edition horse there, if only you could've filled that nasty neck gap with a fine line of greenstuff! Might wanna think about that before painting more horses :D

Otherwise an amazing paint job.

I know 1, second from the right in the back row!

Green stuff the gap on the horse.

Very nice painting!

Great job on the spearmen the unit looks great, I'm looking forward to seeing the unit once based and all have shields.

Was NMM used on the champion and the spearmen on the far right in the second row?

The RBT and the horse are very good as well, but does the horse not have a tail and if so why?

I will continue to follow your progress as the models continue to impress me and they motivate me to get painting.
Keep up the great work Iceman :D
