Trag Sifarins Blog -UPDATE- Commision and Chaos- 06-13-13

#1 Post by Trag Sifarin »

So after reading so many other painting blogs I have decided to start my own. I really don't post much, but I do read the forums alot. So I will post what I have completed so far. All of what is pictured was painted from Dec 2008 till now. I am not going for perfect with the models here, but trying to complete an army in a timely good fashion. After I did a test model I decided to go green and white. Silver armor, purple gems/details and blond hair were other things I had decided. Well I will post them in the order that they were completed. Comments and questions are very welcome.
Well here we go.
Image
This was my color tester and first Spearmen unit. It has a command of new Spearmen but all the other the old plastics.

Image
Image
This was my second unit of Spearmen. All of the newest plastics. Really these are the only ones that see play except for strange circumstances.

Image
Well I got some Great Eagles after that and figured I might as well paint these because they are fairly easy to paint. Also put them on brass rods because the plastic flying bases don't hold up very well to play.

Image
Image
I now moved on to what I thought would be the easiest special to paint. They turned out well but I am still a little unhappy with them. Not bad for my first metal models I have painted in many years.

I will stop the first post here because at this time a league started at my local GW store. I will explain more my next post.

So at this time a three month league was starting at my local GW store. It was to be similar to the Tale of Four Gamers. So you would start with 500 points then add 500 the next month stopping at 1500. You must play one game with that month army and the person with the most points wins at the end. I wanted to make a good list and also paint models I didn't have already done for my army. I will start with my first months list.

Month 1

Noble with Barded steed, Lance, Dragon Armor, Shield and Helm of Fortune.
Image
Image
This was my choice for leader. He has a 1+ rerollable save. Very tough to kill at low points. Had a lot of fun painting this guy. Made me want to paint Dragon princes(foreshadowing).

10 Archers
Image
Image
Nothing to look down upon at 500 points. Also already had 41 spearmen painted :)

15 Phoenix Gaurd w/ Musician and Standard
Image
Image
Well 15 of these guy at 500 points is pretty mean. I painted 20 so I would have them done, but only use 15 for this. These guys are such a pain to put together. They have got to figure out a better way to mold these guys.

Month 2

2 Units of 5 Dragon Princes
Image
Image
So I love Caldor. With these I felt like I had an army taking shape. My noble will go in one of these groups. These were very fun to paint and I use them often so getting them done felt really good.

2 Bolt Throwers
Image
Image
And these are my other love. Painted up really fast. These are the old metal ones. They look very similar to the new ones don't they. People would pick them up and be very surprised because of the weight.

Month 3

Tiranoc Chariot
Image
Image
I had never played with one before and had just put the new horses and new spearmen on the old metal one. Hard to paint but so worth the points if you have an extra slot in special. This model also taught me that I really hate white primer. Painting white over black is time consuming, but hiding all the white takes longer.

Dragon Mage Level 2 With Silver Wand and Gaurdian Phoenix

Told you I like dragons. Anyway I wanted to paint this guy so bad. I hadn't played with the Dragon Mage yet and wanted to and I wanted to use this dragon for my Prince on Stardragon. Wow was this fun to paint. It was primed white then washed with green and slowly drybrushed up to pure white again.

Well that is all I have painted right now. The league just ended on Sun. I will let you guys know how I did(2 wins and 1 loss with everything painted on time). I am currently working on my White Lions now. A little over halfway done.

Wow I like the color scheme alot. Very neat painting.

Those are the nicest 5th edition plastic spears i've seen. I think I'm going go on ebay on pick some up for my nagarythe list.
For the dwarfs, there was only this. Hammerson met Grombrindal’s gaze, and the White Dwarf nodded slowly. If it must be done, let it be done well. Whether they were dead or alive, that was the only way dwarfs knew how to do anything.

And Grombrindal said "10 from the back, yeah?"

I love the colour scheme you've chosen; - well what do you expect since I play Avelorn armies?

Your 4th/5th Edition plastic spear Elves look really great. Some folk don't like them, but I do and I'm always glad when I find more of them. :D

I guess I'm another old spearmen fan - a very good unit and the new command group fits nicely as well. I also like the DP's - using darker steeds is something I'm going to try, too, so I'm curious about the colours you used. Keep up the good work!

everything looks great. I really like how the dragon princes look in your color scheme.

Did you not glue on either of the dragons wings?
I take it this makes it alot more "transport friendly".
Does it still play well with unglued wings?

Very nice! I think the DPs look the best of everything--a very impressive unit. I like the old spearelves as well, but I think it is a shame you didn't find a classic metal command group--that said, you still can! How about a whole army shot?

Everything looks great. The only suggestion I have would be to do some sort of darker wash on the dragon scales. While there is contrast between the top of the scales and the (skin?) underneath, I think it could use more.

Well the horses were painted Bestial Brown. Then they were washed with Devlan Mud and then the raised parts were highlighted with drybrushing Bestial back over it. The mane and other thick hair (also the snout) was just a couple of drybrushes of Bleached Bone. This was also the first time a tried the new washes from Citadel. I was very pleased with them. They have very different properties then the old washes and inks.

Also thanks for all the comments guys

Very nice colour scheme, your army is coming along very well! Where did u get those brass rods from? as i would like to use them for my eagles aswell as i also dont particularly like the plastic ones they give.

I really like the DPs - excellent work!

The metal gauntlet spearmen look much less ridiculous than painting up the hands as flesh.. I think I may be stealing that idea when it comes time for mine :)

Good job!

Thanks, I thought that that would be a good solution to the "giant hands" syndrome. :D

Well I finished the White Lions Today.

I'm pretty happy with how they turned out. It was good to finish them. I had put them aside to work on the 1500 point list months ago.

I also put bases on my bolt throwers.

It's gonna be tough to beat that ;)

I'm big fan of your colour scheme, what kind of green did you use?

Thanks for the support.

For the green I use Snot Green - Goblin Green - Scorpion Green. It is much better for small areas. when I do large areas I usually mix the color together also.

I will also be posting my Dragon Riding Prince after I get home from work today.

I love your color scheme and how consistent you are with it throughout. This is an army that is more than the sum of its parts, I imagine when you have a force down on the table that it looks stunning with its uniformity. I'm very impressed. Congrats on a sharp looking army!

Well I'm glad I got him done because usually he is the one riding the dragon anyway. I also like the pointing at you pose. Makes it look like he is telling the dragon where to go and telling the guy who he is looking at who is next to die :)

Thanks for all the comments guys I really appreciate them.

So a month has gone by and no new posts from me :( Can't say I am to mad though because it is work that is keeping me from painting (and a broken PSP I bought for $25 and fixed for $16 :D ). So this next unit will be a throwback. I present a unit of 9 old school Dragon Princes.
Image

Have had them for a long time and thought that they should get what was coming to them. I added a converted chariot banner and think it turned out alright. So much more armor on them then the new ones. Anyway next is a couple of bolt throwers and another mage for a tournament on Memorial Day, so expect another couple pics by then.

I would of made the fleshy part of the Dragon wings white and the bone green, but that's just me. Everything looks very nice.

Really? Man... Traq has made them look great, but I hate those models. I have seven of them and as soon as I get my act together they are going up on eBay. To each his own.
