There's something awesome about trolls Shannar.

Raising The Army

I'm starting to very vaguely plan out a 2000pt list. Here are the key elements with cost estimates:

Warlord, Great Shaman & BSB (all Orcs) 700
Goblins, Wolf Riders & Big'Uns (Core) 500
Trolls 280
Artillery 170
Snotlings 90

This comes to 1740. I have various options for the remaining 260 but feel like I want a small combat unit of some sort. Any ideas guys (even if not a combat unit)?

Boar riders? Savage orcs? Both make for fun projects to paint from experience :)

Luna, try not to beat them too hard. They are proud about their pseudo-glorious past and their present nothingness, you know.

Something squig related is always a good idea :D Can't really go wrong with mental creatures hopping around like crazy, with a bunch of goblins trying to keep them in check.

Other options depend on how "themed" you want to make your army. Black orcs can be a great choice if you want to go for some very heavy hitters in combat. Boar boys are a great medium heavy cavalry, which perhaps can add some needed speed into the army. And they look fun to paint :)

That would be characterful Shannar. Overall though, I'm aiming for a 'basic' O&G vibe so I'm trying to limit specifically Night/Forest Goblin stuff for example. I do have one squig but then you have to, don't you?

:)

I've kind of burned my boats with that one Luna. By rights my main block should be Savages, they're just better in 8th than normal Big'Uns. But I love the Kev Adams models I've got too much. Two Infantry blocks is excessive I feel because the Trolls have the support block slot covered.

Definitely an option. I'm not mad about the current models but I've a soft spot for the previous plastic boars. Very usefully, they are one of the few units that can take a magic standard, which would be Eternal Flame, given my lack of Flaming attacks. TBH I don't think they're a great unit all told but that wouldn't be the first time for this army. Hence the Snotlings!

Ok, no funky goblin stuff it is :)

If you want something slightly faster then infantry you could look at the chariots. I'm not sure how expensive they are. But if you could fit 3 in your list for those 170 points then that would be a serious threat to anything not heavily armored. Have them on a flank and you have a 20'' area where your opponent will not want to leave any unit standing for fear of getting 3D6 S5 impact hits.

I think the pump wagon is also worth a look. It's perhaps a bit more hit and miss. But it is sure to attract attention. Which is always a good thing for something that is in essence an expendable unit. And it is definitely "basic" O&G stuff.

Absolutely fair. Have you thought about converting your own "goblin savage orcs"? Goblin Boar Riders might also be hilarious looking, picturing goblins modelled to look "tuff" be bouncing off rampaging boars

At the moment I'm on a bit of a 'get stuff done in time for a tournament' thing Luna. Definitely time for creativity a bit later though.

I'm kind of looking for something more stand-out than a normal chariot I think Shannar and the pump wagon fits, especially as I'm bringing Snotlings already. Of course an upgraded 2d6 S5 Impact Hits ignoring armour won't hurt.

Pump Wagons (and stone throwers) are always good additions.

"Soon" I'll paint up my lead belcher and skull crusher. And with all these goblins you and I have been posting I've decided It's time to paint up Elitherian and Stormwing. They'll probably get primed tomorrow (if it's not to humid).

The rock lobber looks like a great addition. You can't really go wrong with a bunch of small guys trying to compensate for that with big rocks. The ranged threat is a must in any list. Bust especially in a more unconventional O&G list I think.

Wonderful stuff Shannar. I guess I could have sourced a Skull Crusher, it's a splendid model with real history. I really like this one too though. Plus I think the lack of wheels simplifies things.

Rod I have yet to see a competitive 8th Edition O&G list with a Rare section that wasn't 2 x Rock Lobber, 2 x Doom Diver, 2 x Mangler Squigs. As ever, I will make concessions to competitiveness but there will be 'fun' stuff too. Right now I'm pretty sure I'll bring a pair of bolt throwers but even with those too it's a bit thin.

That's a really cool model indeed. So, chop chop, get painting.

I personally feel that 2 bolt throwers are not enough to add much to the army. They're only BS3, so you'll hit only half the time in the best case scenario. With long range and / or cover I think you're more likely looking at 5+ to hit. 2 is nowhere near threatening enough in that case. And that's before taking the 1 in 6 misfire chance into account. And at 35 pts a piece I think 3 is a must.

I love the gnarled staff on the shaman! I have to agree with Prince of Spires, the chukkas are not much of a threat except in large numbers

In general I agree Luna. Stone thrower plus two bolters is at least functional IMHO. Nowhere near 2 x Lobber 2x Doom Diver though so I might add a fourth machine.

Thanks Shannar.
