Background & Art of Fantasy Battles: 9th Age (T9A)

#1 Post by Giladis »

Dear 9th Age Supporters

Just to give you a heads up. @Pip Hamilton will be your contact for background & art. His responsibility will be to be your SPOC (single point of contact) for all background and art questions - he will directly work with our project executive board and with our IP lawyer.

What has to be made?
The specific guidelines will be worked out soon but the basic concept is: Everything new from the scratch.

The WHFB background is protected by GW IP - we have to come up with our own stuff guys. To be clear, we want to maintain the basic social concept of the races, their social structure ect. but besides that everything is blank. Our IP lawyer is going to check what we make because we don't want to risk any IP infringement.

Something to note: Please take a look at the current project timeline ( http://www.the-ninth-age.com/news/index ... q-a-part1/ ) - we would want to have some fluff in the first iteration of army books, this means we need:

- a paper as an introduction for the world to the rule book
- paper(s) / story that catches the flavour of the race, explains the society, social background, military structure, believes, ...
- a short paragraph on each unit

Furthermore the Art department will try to set up appropriate structures to supply appealing graphics.

Due to the fact that most of the rules team does not have enough knowledge in this regard we trust in our supporters and Background & Art staff to come up with a world to fight for. Speak with players about this topic - if you know someone heavily into fluff invite him to be part of the process. Organize yourself - you will need people working on each individual army. We can only provide the organizational structure the content has to be community-made.

You are the specialists, I am sure you will do a great job.

Preliminary work is being started for the background of armies in the 9th Age and in order to do that we require the input of the community.

Unlike other topics where commenting other people's opinons is welcome and expected I would like you to not to do so in this topic as each person will be expressing his own view that can't be right or wrong since it is subjective.

The information we are looking for are these:
If you had to choose five adjectives to describe your faction, what would they be?
What special characters do you feel represent your faction the best?
What is your least favourite thing about the fluff for your faction, or the thing you would be most happy to lose?

So please just state your opinion in a single post. In case you remember some things additionaly just edit your post.

Thank you in advance.

HE are; haughty, self-possessed, intelligent, righteous, and shrewd.

Tyrion, Caradryan, Everqueen, Imrik

Fluff wise I'd like to see a change in the 'elder race' image. Yes HE have been around longer then anyone else but LM, however it doesn't seem like it provides them with anything of value... (I'm talking about the characteristics of the race here) Also the cause of the division between 3 elven sub-race can be changed. DE could be more then just wicked cousins while WE are hippies.

High Elves adjectives: Arrogant, self righteous, intelligent, valourful and unyielding

Special Characters: Tyrion & Teclis and I would like to see new lord level annointed (perhaps Caradryan, if it would be possible for him to rise to lordom (is that even a word?)

I personally like very much of the "We are keeping the world together! We made the vortex and saved all these ignorants who now don't understand to kneel before us" style arrogant feeling as well with the idea of subtle intrique at courts. I also like the analogy to middle age England colonization. Perhaps Elves should try to reinstall their position as lords of the seas and world! I would personally like more flammable relation with Dark Elves, during End of Times it was acceptable that elves marched together but perhaps during 9th age end of times could be ended where old world prevailed and High Elves and Dark Elves fell in to even deeper civil war afterwards.
High Elves since Aug 2010: Tot /W / L / D - 100 / 75 / 23 / 2
Tomb Kings since Sep 2013:Tot / W / L / D - 31 / 18 / 12 / 1

When it comes to special character I think the blinded Eltharion is a perfect combination of high elf arrogance and proud.

Whatever you do, please disregard End Times entirely.

While it wasn't entirely badly written, it felt like a Mat Ward nightmare to the bitter end.

Alith Anar aka Shadow King. I hope "Shadow King" not licensed by GW?

High Elves/Elves of Light:

Adjectives: Arrogant, Imperious, Noble, Valiant, Righteous

Characters: Tyrion, Alarielle, Eltharion, Imrik (if adding in End Times, Teclis as well) If adding characters from history, Aenarion

Least Favorite Fluff: Despite often being considered one of the premier forces against Chaos, in the 8th Edition book at least, they almost never fight Chaos. In short, pretty much all of their background is fighting Dark Elves in the 8th Edition fluff, almost nothing about Chaos.

Lizardmen/Reptilians:

Adjectives: Unfeeling, Implacable, Ancient, Omniscient, Brutal

Characters: Lord Kroak, Lord Mazdamundi, Kroq-Gar, Chakax

Least Favorite Fluff: They don't do much of anything outside of Lustria. I would like them to take a more active roll in the fight against their arch-enemies Chaos or Skaven.
