2nd Edition Kings of War release
Hey guys I'd heard a pdf of the 2nd edtion of Kings of War would be available today, haven't been able to find it (only a beta version from March). Does anyone know what's happening with this?

You'll need to be signed up to the Mantic newsletter. It will be released 'tonight' by UK time.

Malekith stepped down from his throne and loomed over the mage. ‘You have always intended for Tyrion to draw the Widowmaker.’
Teclis nodded, defiant. 'By drawing again His sword, the curse of Khaine will be lifted from our line.'

Re: 2nd Edition Kings of War release
Thanks! Read the first edition, and quite liked it. Looked like if say 6th edition warhammer had gone a different way. With some decent army lists I'd love to give this a go. Would it be worth starting a new Kings of War section if enough people start playing it using their high elf models? Heard Rick Priestley is doing the foreword of the new edition, if he's signed off on it I'd imagine it to be pretty good.Mentheus of Chrace wrote:You'll need to be signed up to the Mantic newsletter. I'm also excited to see this seeing as a lot of my 'crew' are potentially going to be playing this.

Apparently the list is not complete, it does not have some mount choices or units (cat riders, drake riders)

Re: 2nd Edition Kings of War release
ya these are just basic pdfs, im guessing one will need to buy the proper rule book for full rules, which is fair enough!

The full armies and rules will be up - that's Mantic's policy. It just won't happen immediately.

This is the 2nd Ed beta rules, which are the same as the regular rules, just scruffier. It has all the magic items and extra scenarios, the only thing missing now is the unique characters and units from the army lists.

Re: 2nd Edition Kings of War release
I read the rules and I like them. They are simple but not simplistic. I am sure KoW will not avoid comparisons to WHFB but as in the case of AoS you have to look at it as on a different product. Mantic says they write rules and they are games company. GW says they are miniatures company. It is clear they look at different goals and I expect that in time they will be even less similar than they seem to be at the moment.
I am much more eager to try KoW, it looks neat and tidy while AoS is very messy with its pile up rule. The variety seems low at the moment but I remember the same feeling when I tried Waramster for the first time and it was the contrary. I think it is something people interested in games are looking for. The rules set that is easy to learn but hard to master. In fact, I think KoW has a more historic system appeal but I also admit it is affected by the army lists that we know are not yet full.
Expect a report at some stage

I'm very impressed after reading this - I'm actually excited about wargaming again. The rules feel like 4th through 6th edition Warhammer, but cleaned up and a lot less exploitable. I'm not seeing anything inherently broken so far.

Re: 2nd Edition Kings of War release
I will be running the first KoW tournament in Croatia in September to spice things up a bit. The final months of the End Times and this Age of Sigmar has killed quite a lot of activity in our community. Not to mention I feel kind of silly teaching some dozen kids during spring a game they can no longer legaly acquire (not counting 2nd hand).

I said long ago KoW ruleset is really fun, and if I still had a fantasy army I'd be interested in it as well. But for now 40k has my eye.
For the dwarfs, there was only this. Hammerson met Grombrindal’s gaze, and the White Dwarf nodded slowly. If it must be done, let it be done well. Whether they were dead or alive, that was the only way dwarfs knew how to do anything.
And Grombrindal said "10 from the back, yeah?"

Re: 2nd Edition Kings of War release
My gaming groupe and a few other cities are looking at KoW, but we are also considering warthrone from avatars of war.
http://www.avatars-of-war.com/eng/web/i ... &Itemid=51
The rules are slightly more complex to those in KoW, and they have much better, I mean amazing models. Leaving GW in the dust. but they have much much less of them available .
Still not sure what we will go for, our initial taught s was KoW, but now we are taking a closer look at warthrone, we need a few games of each at our club meetings, and hopefully a clear winner will emerge.

Re: 2nd Edition Kings of War release
I just read the 2nd book and it seemed really good to simulate medieval style wargame. Certainly worth testing around
High Elves since Aug 2010: Tot /W / L / D - 100 / 75 / 23 / 2
Tomb Kings since Sep 2013:Tot / W / L / D - 31 / 18 / 12 / 1

Re: 2nd Edition Kings of War release
It's been a mixed response so far but pretty much all of my group is willing to try it. I'm definitely on board though, just the fact I can field ranked up units is a huge thing for me. At first I was a bit put off by the whole not taking models off mechanic, but it's growing on me, the longer my carefully modelled phalanx of front rank spearmen models can stay on the board the better. In wfb they were usually half dead before they saw combat, and then they would see combat and be very definitely dead lol. Actually more motivated to reduce the painting backlog than I have been in a long time. Would like a bit more variety in the lists (ideally so all our current models can represent something different), and it would be nice if magic was a bigger part of the game. I wonder if it will get to the point that someone just writes kings of war lists for the wfb range, special characters included.

That is what the guys form KoW promised. To release armies that GW abandoned.Ielthan wrote: I wonder if it will get to the point that someone just writes kings of war lists for the wfb range, special characters included.

Re: 2nd Edition Kings of War release
I have down lades the free rules and some basic armylist for KoW 2. Me and a friend have agreed to try 2000 point game. I will run my elves.
Otherwise, I like the Kingdoms of Men list so I can use Empire and start collecting proper pikes!
I will buy the new rulebook too.

Awesome! Hope they can get around the ip legal stuff. Or that gw does the right thing and hands over the ip.KillerK wrote:That is what the guys form KoW promised. Re: 2nd Edition Kings of War release
It won't be the same IP, it'll just be similar enough that it works mechanically - they will write new Mantic fluff for each.

Re: 2nd Edition Kings of War release
I don't see High Elves getting their own list since the current base Elf list pretty well reflects us. The only thing lacking is a Phoenix, but you can ally with Baselia for that. Wood Elves might have a better shot, but I can make a good Wood Elf list with KoW Elf list as well. Dark Elves are definitely getting their own with Twilight Kin (currently beta testing). Three other Warhammer inspired armies are currently up for beta test. The Herd=Beastmen, Ratkin=Skaven, League of Rhordia=Empire. We played my wood elves as mantic elves vs my mate's Brettonian Kingdom of Men. It was a 2000 point match that lasted for only 1 hour and 40 minutes. It was very fun and satifying game. Definitely hooked myself and recommend it to everyone here.
Re: 2nd Edition Kings of War release
If they really want to bring over fantasy players they need to put out a list that's a good fit for warriors of chaos asap. They're arguably the most popular army these days, using them as orcs etc won't bring people across. It's tricky given the diversity of the list but I'm sure it's doable.
