HE light council @ Crossroads

#1 Post by Irishranger »

A few people said they'd be interested in reports on my games at the spring crossroads GT so here they are. This was under the ETC
2.5.1 comp which is
Banner of the World Dragon 3 choices
● Frostheart Phoenix 1 choice
● Strength 6 or more Flying Large Target above 2 2 choices each
● 3 or more mounted characters 1 choice
● 1 or more Eagle Claw Bolt Thrower 1 choice
● Teclis (Spirit Leech choice included) 5 choices
● Alarielle the Radiant 2 choices
● Banner of Averlorn 1 choice

Current ETC comp
Banner of the World Dragon 3 choices
● Frostheart Phoenix, Star Dragon 1 choice each
● Strength 6 or more Flying Large Target above 2 2 choices each
● 3 or more mounted characters 1 choice
● 1 or more Eagle Claw Bolt Thrower 1 choice
● Book of Hoeth taken by Archmage 1 choice
● Teclis (Spirit Leech choice included) 4 choices
● Alarielle the Radiant 2 choices
● Banner of Averlorn 1 choice

The list
AM lvl 4 light ironcurse
LM sword of anti heroes, 4++ parry shield, book of hoeth
Mage lvl 1 light scroll
BSB GW, DA, Flaming banner
15 archers full com
2x 5 reavers bows and spears
2x 5 helms shields
28 WL full com botwd
eagle
4x RBTs
Frosty
2398

Game 1
Played Paul Gates from Team USA with Vamps.
His list
Count Mannfred
lvl 4 undeath scroll
vamp bsb on vamps
2 banshees
3 dogs
bats
9 CH
skelly bunker
2 zombie units
3 or 4 morghast archai

It was a really good match up so I pushed hard. Frosty got into his bunker
on a 20" turn 2 and killed both banshees and the bsb over 2 rounds before
breaking and escaping. CH got redirected and shot to bits by the flaming
archers and RBTs. Lions got into Mannfred turn 4 and smashed up his bunker
but ended up breaking when the morghast counter charge and a great magic
phase meant he got 3 spells off(including D&D). lions died in his 5 and in
mine I shot off the 5 remaining skellies and mannfred. Game ended there.
VPs 2380 to 1339
16-4 to HE

Game 2 B&G
Played a chap called Jason with DE
His list
4 RBTs
Lvl 4 life with scroll
2x5 warlocks
harpies
cloak of twilight pegmaster
4++ pegmaster
10 DR
5 DR
5 harpies
block of spears with 3 fighty characters

He seemed to be there for fun rather than competitive and he made 2 crucial
mistakes in deployment. He put the spears down too early which allowed me
to put the lions opposite them and a peg master in charge range of frosty
turn 1. Lions ran at spear block and killed them all in 3 rounds. Magicked
and shot everything else off. Cloak peg managed to clean up the archers
which meant I broke but he had nothing left by turn 6.
18-2 to HE

Game 3 ME
Played Chris O'Brien from Team USA
His list
Stardragon Prince
Lvl 4 high book
Lvl 1 heavens scroll
reaver bow bsb
4 rbts
30 archers
2x5 helms champs and banner
22 WL botwd full com

He won the roll to deploy first and go first. We both set up in the corner
with my frosty behind a hill out wide to jump forward and kill his firebase
if the dragon came forward. We traded shooting and magic evenly until he
got a 9v4 magic phase and forced through both unforging on the botwd and
4d6 soul quench on the lions. He started focusing the lions and on turn 6
a double 1 magic phase and 11 wounds from a 2d6 soul quench killed the last
of the lions. I managed to pick up a bit more chaff so it was a 12-8 loss.
VPs 275-609
8-12 loss

Game 4 KotH
Played Greg Person with VC
His list
Mannfred
lvl 2 vamp on vamps scroll
10 CH
3 Vargs
3x 5 dogs
bats
zombies
skelly bunker with MR1 banner
ghouls
28 GG with banner of barrows
wraith

Another great matchup. He vanguarded up the dogs overly aggressively and I
charged and killed them all turn one. with the lions in the centre turn one
he was on the back foot. He tried a counter charge with GG but they got
exploded the turn they charged. An eagle blocked the horrors and the lions
went into mannfred turn 4 and killed everything in 2 rounds. Vargs had been
shot off, frosty ate the zombies and the helms killed the ghouls.
VPS 2675- 699
20-0 to the HE

Game 5
Played Keith Conroy with OK
His list
Tyrant fencers, greedy fist, other kit
lvl 4 maw crown other kit
lvl 4 death scroll stuff
BSB runemaw
9 guts swiftness
4 bulls full com
2 dogs
6 ME poison sniper gleaming pennant
IB

Wasn't sure about this won but knew I needed a big win to place anywhere.
He put the ME on one side and everything else on the other. I put 2 rbt,
reaver unit and the archers opposite the ME and everything else facing
the gutstar. IB killed an rbt, lost its cannon, got charged by helms,
kicked the shit out of them and got a big searing doom to the face. ME
got shot and magicked to death but took an RBT with them. Helms charged
bulls and eventually lost and escaped. frosty mopped up the bulls but as
I forgot to reform him right he got charged by guts and killed. He faced
the lions and the lions went into the guts with helms and reavers in the
flank I killed 6 guts in a round and ground them out with no buffs due
to failing to cast repeatedly.
VPs 2650 - 685
20-0 to HE

2nd on BPs
Best HE
6th overall

No pictures I'm afraid but I think both Chris and Paul have done up reports which may include pictures of the games.

Hey man, nice to hear from you. I was on the table next to you during game 3, the HE list with double frosties playing against Warriors. Looked like you had a good game going there with Chris.

You did pretty well with that list. What if anything would you change?

Thanks for a very interesting writeup :) I have fairly little to add, unfortunately, but I put in this comment anyway to show my appreciation.

Good stuff. Game against chris sounds tense.

what so you reckon your bad match ups are here?
death is lighter than a feather, duty heavier than a mountain

do an rpg personality test, im from Ireland and I get...

Hi Irishranger,

Congratulations on a very good placing! =D> I am looking forward to reading Chris reports on TWF as I know he plans to do so soon!

I have a quick comment on one of your games. I must admit that I was initially surprised when you mentioned that White Lions defeated DE spears in 3 turns. My impression was that spears with 3 ranks, re-rolls to hit and striking before Lions should inflict some casualties before Lions managed to hit. Even more so if 3 characters were fighting. However, Lions still hit on 3+, attack in 3 ranks too and wound on 2+ with no armor save. Was it enough for lions to defeat the enemy on their own or did you support them with spells and were all the characters were in that unit in that fight?

Cheers!

From what I remember I had speed of light, earth blood and a -1 to hit spell(not sure about this) during the fight. the only characters in the unit were the lvl 4 who sat on the edge out of combat and the loremaster. He rolled up dwellers so I had to split the characters between the archers and the lions. He only fights with 3 ranks of spears so 12 attacks with his 4 fighty characters, its 9 hits 4.5 wounds and 3 past the save, not world breaking considering I hit back with the loremaster who kills 4 on his own and the lions do a couple of wounds to the characters and 5 to the unit. I rarely go into combats where I need the buffs to win. I use the buffs to keep more lions alive at the end and go through a unit faster.

Changes as I've said before I'll keep to myself for the moment but they are small and obvious so shouldn't be too hard to figure out. Match ups I'm still uncertain on, VC is 15+ all day but I'm not nearly so clear on the bad matchups. I'm testing some more this weekend so I should have a better idea. Skaven, O&G, gunline Empire and Beastmen are the ones I'd worry about.

I'm also interested in that combat SM mentions - how did it go down? Great results either way. Thanks for posting.

Hi Irishranger.

Thanks for the writeup. Really appreciate it.

I've tried the same build for a while now, and I really enjoy playing it. Having so many strategical options makes for a very fun and interesting list to play.
Recently I've tried without the 4 bolt throwers and adding a second frostheart, which of course changes a lot.
Anyway, how would you rate the performance of your 4 bolt throwers in this tournament? Outside elven matchups I usually find them very disappointing and easy points to get for my opponents, while the presence of 2 frosthearts can be terrifying for many armies (especially elves and chaos).

Great fun to reda about your succes i the tournament!
Did you ever find a use for the undeath sig spell? I see alot of potential in summoning crypt horrors vs skaven or other horde armies.
