I was going to suggest the Ring as it's not written into the list!

oh good catch SA, its in there alright, edited!

@Andros
in my mind the arhcers are really only a deterrent/effective against other elves or light troops, having 21 or 30 archers is pretty irrelevant playing warriors of chaos for example. I use hand of glory to make up for the lack of numbers really.

you may have appoint about the reavers.
I play a lot of direct & aggressive lists though, for example;

-beastmen( don't laugh :D they are solid now under ETC) when you have blight kings, 35 ish gors, 35 ish bestigors, a few chariots and a doombull capable of taking down your dragon, you need to buy yourself time really for shooting and magic to work!

- ogres, gutstar, mournfang unit or 2, ironblaster or 2, if you get charged by mourfang, your lions will win but be in bad shape after, imagine an iceshard, regen, or +toughness or the mournfang/gutstar

even against 80-90 shot wood elves I am delighted when I see 20 shots being wasted on a rubbish unit of silverhelms/reavers, letting my dragon get into place. or else helping to zone in on that juicy sister bus

I understand that in a lot of games they will bleed points, but if I can make or set up a positive trade out of it I am happy. just forcing your opponent to deal with them by threatening a scroll caddy, for example, can be priceless.

once the lions are in combat high magic doesn't really help so it has to be the right fight.

im not sure if I have explained myself very well!

thanks, not sure how many games il get anytime soon as a wave of enthusiasm for mordheim has begun..

OK as someone who's not played the book.

Can you explain to me the rationale behind not taking a Ward save on the Prince?

Aha!

:)

Next question. How often does the Archmage find himself in combat alongside the Lions and how often do you get his 5+ save up to a 4+ or 3+?

:D

I have only played one game so far with it, against a soft enough high elf list, picked it apart really with shooting, magic (soul quench for the win) and the dragon, no combat for the lions.

in my mind I think looking for anything better than a 4++ is just wishful thinking.

I don't want to do too much fighting with the lions unless the odds are heavily in my favour, they after all are only T3 with a 5+ in combat. one bad combat and they are finished as a fighting force and high magic has no buff to aid them really in combat.

I think there is still a fear of white lions from the last book where they were super with rerolls to hit, now there are so many units that can do a job on them, or even a simple miasma/iceshard can render them ineffective.

Yeah, I guess that lacking Book of Hoeth, you still can't count on getting more than one spell through per turn, despite the +5 and low casting values. Ring indeed looks important here, partly as you say Sparky because you want to double up vs elves etc.. Also though, I suppose it gives you that missile option while letting you do something else with your fourth spell. If you have three Augments that's more you can do while in combat.

Agree on Lions they can be great vs certain opponents or with the right buffs but elves for example are an issue.

On the plus side any spell you get off will buff that Ward up, there are no other casters to split the effect.

You are probably right about the Sea Helm, which rules out the Reaver Bow. With only 2A I don't think there's much point to giving him anything remotely offensive so going for Warrior Bane is probably your best bet I'd say. This does allow for a fairly solid defensive setup:

Warrior Bane, Shield of the Merwyrm, Golden Crown of Atrazar, Potion of Toughness

If utilized correctly with the Shield of Saphery and Naval Discipline, this guy should take a lot of effort to bring down :)

I'd consider the Helm bus because efficient use of Core looks vital here.

Right so after a bit of a delay, moving pn!

Myself and my mates decided to give 8th a good send off amd had a massive 20k battle in my shed! Hoodling hole style! 3 standard tables long.

so it was 10k of high elves piloted by myself and another, Versus 10k of beastmen, orcs and ogres piloted by 2 other, so, 4 players.

It took 11 hours to play 6 turns and was EPIC!

Il post up lists in a while and people are welcome to guess the outcome! :D
