#45 Post by Curu Olannon »

I've updated this heavily with lots of sample lists. Most have been chosen from credible sources such as last year's ETC rosters, big and recent tournaments and ETC playtesting experiences. Some lists however are based solely on our experience, as we have been unable to find any strong lists for these fractions with results to show for.

A few examples are missing. Also note that we of course expect people to bring variants we haven't thought of here, as well as completely new approaches. You can't plan for everything though, so this is the best we can do.

Fixed examples. Missing good DW and LZ lists with merits.

Updated BRs with HE vs OK. Matchup is definitely -2 for SDHE.

Re: The Secret Journey

#47 Post by Curu Olannon »

As I wrote in the report against OK, I didn`t get to evaluate the Griffon Noble properly today. However, what I did realize was that my list is probably quite spell-selection dependent. Furthermore, Fury Ring provides tremendous versatility as far as magical offense is concerned.

While I don`t intend for this list to face gunlines, I do intend for it to face other lists with some degree of shooting, where Soul Quench is really good. Usually however, I`d want at least Apotheosis or Walk Between Worlds in addition (preferably both). To this end, a second mage is really needed. The problem with the "default" SD approach is the lack of the Ring, which is impossible to fit in if you go 2 heroes + 2 mages and one of the heroes carries the Crown of Stubborn. What I`m looking to do then is basically split the Helms into 2 smaller units, one with fighters and 1 for Mages. As the bus is often commited fast, having a secondary unit to jump into and keep casting from is great. Let`s take a look at my current list:
:: Star Dragon ::

Prince on Star Dragon with star lance, dragonhelm, golden crown of atrazar, tots, shield = 598
Noble on Griffon, enchanted shield, dawnstone, heavy armour, lance = 260
Noble BSB on Barded Steed, heavy armour, shield, spear, botwd = 168
High Mage L2, scroll, furyring = 170
Characters/heroes: 1196/598

14 Silver Helms, full command and shields = 352
5 reavers, champion = 90
17 Spearelves, musician and standard bearer with +1M = 188
Core: 630

4 RBTs = 280
Eagle = 50
Frostheart Phoenix = 240
Rare: 570

Army total: 2396
So leaving the Noble at home, we`re looking to include a second L2 mage with the Ring of Fury. This increases my chances of getting Apotheosis from 44% => 91% and I also have the option of 3 casts of Soul Quench. Let`s see what such a list looks like:
Prince on Star Dragon with star lance, dragonhelm, golden crown of atrazar, tots, shield = 598
Noble BSB on Barded Steed, heavy armour, shield, lance, botwd = 172
High Mage L2, steed, scroll, furyring = 180
High Mage L2, steed, powerstone = 150
Noble on Barded Steed, heavy armour, shield, lance = 97
Characters/heroes: 1197/599

13 Silver Helms, full command and shields = 329
8 Silver Helms, Musician and shields = 194
5 reavers, champion = 90

4 RBTs = 280
Eagle = 50
Frostheart Phoenix = 240
Rare: 570

Army total: 2380
20 points to spare that can`t really be put to use anywhere. I suppose a 6th Reaver could fit the bill. The power stone is an item that isn`t crucial, but brings a lot to the list. It could of course be swapped for something else, but the question is what? Protection for the second Noble is an obvious candidate, but he can`t afford the Dawnstone. Yet another possibility here is to re-include the Spears and de-mount both mages, but this makes the Spears worth going for and creates an unwieldy unit that is very vulnerable and worth a lot of points (roughly 500). It would allow me to put the stubborn Helm + Enchanted Shield on the 2nd Noble though. Just a straight-up swap would see the Spears at 18 strong with the M6 banner. Perhaps it could be a viable approach, with that many bodies and Shield of Saphery they are hard to shift at a distance - besides who would want to target them with the Stardragon, Frostheart and bus running around?

In the end, though the Spears are tempting, I think too many opponents can simply target them and eat a big chunk of points from me, or simply suicide-charge to get the mages.

Ok so here is a Spearman-variant of the last list. Since I have so many months left before the tournament I can at least make a draft and consider playing it:

Prince on Star Dragon with star lance, dragonhelm, golden crown of atrazar, tots, shield = 598
Noble BSB on Barded Steed, heavy armour, shield, lance, botwd = 172
High Mage L2, scroll, furyring = 170
High Mage L2 = 120
Noble on Barded Steed, heavy armour, lance, crown of command, enchanted shield = 135
Characters/heroes: 1195/597

13 Silver Helms, full command and shields = 329
19 Spearelves, Full Command and +1 Movement banner = 216
5 reavers, champion = 90
Core = 635

4 RBTs = 280
Eagle = 50
Frostheart Phoenix = 240
Rare: 570

Army total: 2400

A good read.

I'm a bit confused on the scoring system. How is it worked out? 60-20 is the max score with four 20-0s but how do you get to that? What is results were all say, 17-3?

Yes, pretty much. Of course, if two people get 20-0 and the other two tie their games 10-10, you still max the cap and get the same points as a team who wins all 4 games 20-0. "True" Battle Points are used a a tie breaker I believe (it could be Victory Points, I`m not sure).

:: Pairing Training 3 ::

Time for some more practice! We`ve had a couple of interesting rounds, where we specifically sought out lists that are strong against us and popular in what we perceive the meta to be like.

For the first round, we had blocking VC, Coven EMP, Nurgle DoC and a DE list similar to ours. Our armies were SDHE, DE, OK, DW. Unfortunately I don`t remember exactly how things went down, but we ended up with the following:

SDHE vs DE
DE vs EMP
DW vs DoC
OK vs VC

I believe the Star Dragon has a small advantage vs DE. I`d say it`s a +1 matchup. DE vs Empire is likely +1/+2. Dwarfs vs DoC is hard to evaluate, but we believe it is hard for DoC to score points without risking a lot, in which case Dwarfs have a slight advantage, so probably 0 ish, maybe +1. OK vs non-Hexwraiths VC should be dine. Death is an issue, so it`s not a big advantage, but still +1. A massive +4 in our favour, despite trying to pick hard lists. What we see is that trying to tailor an entire team is very hard: our armies seen together are highly flexible.

For the second round, we had MSU-DoC with lots of Horrors, L4 Death GUO, ambushing hounds and flies, Dark Elves similar to ours, Skaven with bell and Coven Empire. Our lists were the same. We put out DW, their output was DoC. We countered with OK-DE, they countered with DE-EMP. We chose DW - EMP, SDHE - DE. They chose DoC - OK, SK - DE.

DW - EMP
SDHE - DE
OK - DoC
DE - SK

Lots of matchups we are unsure about, playtesting needed. Overall though, despite the lists looking really strong, I don`t think we are in big trouble here.

Good work curu. I'm particularly interested in how the star dragon and spearmen list works out - let us know how play testing goes!
