If you keep the magical allotment to a minimum, you can field 3 of theses guys for less than a star dragon, and even form them into some sort of monstrous flying unit at any point of a game.

So after testing a few things for the iron brush tournament I have decided to try something like below.

I pretty much need to stick to a list style soon to get some good practice in as event is only a short while away.

So I am looking at:

Prince – General
Star Dragon, Dragon Armour, Charmed Shield, Talisman of Preservation, Warriors Bane, Other tricksters shard.

Lords: 599

Noble - Battle Standard
Great Weapon, Helm of Fortune, Guardian Phoenix, Shield, Dragon armour, Great Eagle

Mage – Lore of Heavens, Level 2, Silver wand, iron curse icon (had to drop ring for more special points. Still not sure is shadow/high or heavens is best. Heavens gives me a good mix plus ice shard is ace. Shadow will allow to miasma stuff for purple sun to affect most people and pot of withering/pit/mind razor. High is cheap to cast. Metal is good but I feel the others offer something better)

Mage - Lore of Death, Seer staff – Purple Sun, Soul blight

Heroes: 541pts

21 Archers -1st among equals
Full Command, Banner of eternal flame

I am even thinking of dropping the lion chariots all together atm, as in the current meta (WoC/Ogres/Emp) they just don't have the punch for the points when I can get 9 elite guys for the same price.

I'm more keen on the second list to be honest; I prefer more army and less magic. The double Lion Chariots is also really quite good at the 2400 point level when combined with the Dragon and should allow you to both hit hard and conserve points fairly well.

Had a practice with new list last night. Massive win with him conceding turn 4.

He had:

Nurgle Chaos lord, Festus and Nurgle bsb in a unit of 40 chaos warriors of nurgle, hw/s and banner of eternal flame (I didn’t know he had this as closed list)

4 bile trolls
6 hounds
6 Chaos Ogres
3 Dragon Ogres
7 Chaos Knights of Nurgle

I had

Stardragon Lord
Eagle BSB
Lvl2 light
21 archers (FC/Boef)
14 archers
14 archers
6 dragon princes
6 swordmasters
18 white lions
Lion chariot
2 eagles

Basically Dragon went after knights with the white lions and bsb as back up and took them off turn 3.

Eagle with Pha’s held up the dragon ogres to allow a time warped lion chariot to charge them, taking them off for 2 wounds to the chariot.

Net held up the block turn 2 as he failed str to move, and both his spells.

Sword-masters died to bile tolls but took them down to 2.

Unit of 21 died to a combo charge by ogres/flanked trolls. Other archers finished off the trolls and never got around to killing the ogres (down to 3 at this point) due to him conceding.

Dragon breath/archers/RoF took the unit of of chaos warriors from 40 to 24 in 1 phase. He was now flanked by my dragon, about to have full white lions, bsb and knights in the front. As I declared my charges he admitted he had the banner, which meant bar the white lions, he couldn’t do much ad with losing 16 already, and my bsb ready to accept any challenges so the dragon can go stomp with time warp on, he decided to end it.

Lets hope more people have that banner at Adepticon!

How was having the lone lvl2?

Having 1 mage isnt much problem really

With 3 spells and a bound I can usually get a good magic phase

With +3 dispel Im not far off a standard lvl 4.

It gives me much more punch else where. Light is a great cheap lore too

I am finding a lot of the new armies do not have many high levels. I have seen in 2400 lists:

1 lvl 2 light mage to increase the war altars banishment

1 lvl 2 Nurgle to buff combat units

WoC and DoC with no magic at all.

Very nice win- the WoC player should perhaps consider putting a gift on his BSB for flaming attacks, that way he can still remove regeneration from enemy units before the rest of the unit attacks. I've actually been considering using a similar setup with a big Nurgle Warrior "deathstar" (well, one to max 450 points due to comp), sad to see it get smashed so easily!

Solid advice. But why GW over halberds? Keeps their rather nice initiative intact

Most people are already hitting you on a 5+. Rather have that Str6 in todays meta with monstrous cav

Yep I agree, I was going to suggest it too (but this aint a thread for critiquing his army list so I didn't bother ). Also the benefit to great weapons is that the unit is so big to start with that striking last doesn't matter much at all- you'll more than likely get the same number of attacks, not that you'll lose that many to enemy attacks (unless they got lots of impacts/stomps).

So played a new DoC list the other night.

He had:

Daemon prince of slaanesh with exaulted gift (got either blade) lvl 4 slaanesh
Khorne herald on juggernaughts with 3 other jugernaughts (25pt gift. D3 impact)
Slaanesh herald on seeker (ASF, 25pts gift. Got Impact also) with 10 seekers
Slaanesh herald on foot with 40 daemonettes (ASF, Sword of might)
25 blood letters
Soul grinder of slaanesh with phlem stone thrower thing.

So I destroyed him to his herald on steed left on 1 wound. I still had my lord on dragon (dragon on 1 wound) bsb on 1 wound, lion chariot, 4 swordmasters, an eagle and my mage.

What I learnt:

1: Any high level daemon with eitherblade is BLOODY nails. Luckily my dragon with light magic buffs smashed him up

2: The magic chart is well random. Worse thing was my bsb got snotted on by nurgle, causing the 2 wounds on turn 1!

3: Some of the slaanesh spells are petty good. The hex that does 2d6 hits and wounds on a 4+ with no armour is good vs dragons!

4: 6 swordmasters with time warp on are very funny.

5: Dragon princes really are pants.

So, dragon princes are dropped again. For their points I have taken 2 more eagles and then the rest in white lions, splitting the unit into two units of 12 rather than 1 unit of 18+

So I had a crack vs another DoC army last night.

He had:

Lord of change with wand of whimsy and reroll magic phase
Tzeentch bsb with 30 pink horros with D6 Strength for unit
Flaming chariot
3 single plague beasts
30 Plague bearers
2 skill cannons
10 ambush flesh hounds

Won the game about 1935 vs 1450. It was a tough game, with his magic phase “Chaos” results doing loads of damage (kept getting 6’s on my units, killing an eagle, 6 white lions and 7 archers turn 1!)

My lord died to a KB single hit from a bloodletter on chariot…FFS!

Dragon wasted the plague bearers solo but then got killed by a whimsy tzeentch lord...

Man of the match again was the light mage. Pha’s lvl 2 went off on my 2 eagles, bsb and archers as they flank/rear charged the over confident flesh hounds and popped them.

What I found with Daemons is the power of the list is:

Skill cannons
Greater daemons
Magic/Magic phase effects
Plague beasts can be a pain as T5 W4 with regen

The rest of the army is “Meh” with Archers being able to take stuff on.

So played what will probably be my second last game before Adepticon vs Wood Elves last night

Roughly he had:

Lvl 4 life (with +1 dispel dice and reroll dispel attempts) (regrowth, regen, throne, flesh)
Lvl 2 Loren (tree singing, etheral spell)
Bsb (hail of doom set up)
Some combat hero like a dryad.
Treeman
3 units of 6 wardancers
waywatchers
2 x 10 dryads
2 x 20 gladeguard


I rolled shems (swapped from speed of light), banishment and pha’s

Think that was it.

I tabled him with some amazing luck at points for the loss of 1 eagle, 1 unit of 12 white lions and the lion chariot

High lights were:

Turn 1:Lvl 4 miscasting throne of vines 1st spell and losing 2 lvls. Losing regrowth and throne.

Turn 4: 12 White lions charge 10 archers with flesh to stone. Fail to wound, losing 2 back, rolling double 6 and fleeing….to be run down by said archers.

Lion chariot charging into his lords archer unit, heroically killing a few, only to tripple 1 his armour saves and get smushed.

EPIC MOMENT
I checkily cast shems burning gaze on 1 dice at his treeman. He has 3 dice left I have 2…he elects to dispel with 1 dice…failing both times. I roll 4 hits, get a tripple 6 and a 3. He fails all armour saves and takes his previously unwounded treeman off!

Turn 6: He moves his remaining units (10 dyrads and lvl 2) away from my army.

I manage a cheaky charge with the dragon to kill the mage, my mage casts banishment at his dryads, getting if off and rolling the double 6. 8 dryads die and then the unit is finished with 1 dice ring of fury

My main threat (other than cannons!) is Skaven, but from recent Canada/AMerican tournaments, Skaven are few and far between and If I face them I will justg have to play they well/luckily if they have high magic/stormbanner/cannons

I expect to face alot of warriors/Ogres and I am happy enough with that as I have played against them the most. I am still tempted to take the razor banner on the white lions to really hurt armour, but a few recon its overkill

Going to squeeze in a practice game tonight and that might be my last toll the event next weekend!

So I had my last practice for Adepticon last night and was another win for the Elves!
Played against WoC

He had:
Lord of Nurgle w ogre blade, ASF stupid helmet, Breath weapon, shield, Dawnstone
Nurgle exhaulted with enchanted shield, talisman of preservation, BSB
Festus
37 Nurgle warriors with Hand weapon and shield…all in 1 unit
8 Nurgle knights
6 Ogres
3 Trolls
Chimera with regen/breath
6 Hounds

He rolled the vortex T test spell and Miasma
I had Speed of light, Banishment and Shems. I had rolled a double and should have taken Pha’s tbh but wanted ranged damage

The game was a general slug fest with me taking out his Chimera, Trolls, Ogres and Hounds by turn 3 for the loss of 5 white lions (breath attack) and my chariot (fluffed vs Trolls as he kept passing regen)

My eagles chaffed up his knights and big unit for a while.

Now at Adepticon, there is no way I would have charged the big unit. I would have just avoided it/fed it small point units while I finished off the knights and won by points, but since it was a club game I didn’t.

I charged my dragon in the rear, BSB and white lions in the front. In 1 round I only killed 4 warriors because of Damn Festus’s regen plus his armour still gave him 6+ saves, and I was hitting on 4’3 and 5’s…
He wiped out the white lions. I held.
Next turn his lord cut down the dragon but bsb and lord held.
For the next 4 rounds of Combat, My lord and bsb held their own vs the whole unit. My lord was in a challenge with his but kept passing his wards, while the bsb took 2-3 warriors a turn and killed his bsb. Id lose combat my 1-3 (due to rear/bsb)
By turn 5 both guys where on 1 wound…but I was still in combat. Even when he charged his knights in with warbanner on my lords flank I still held!

My turn 6 I charge my swordmasters into his flank, fluff trying to take out festus (do 1 wound for 1 back) but my lord did a wound on his lord, and my bsb killed 3…

I won combat by 3…

His warrior unit rolled (steadfast) and got a 10…
His knights rolled…and got an 11…

So my 4 swordmasters, 1 wound lord on foot and 1 wound 1 eagle bsb ran down 7 chaos knights and 20 warriors with 2 wound lord and festus…

It made me laugh

Very well done.
I am a bit surprised the dragon setup did as well, but I guess if you avoid the big cannon armies its solid.

Lack of fantasy coverage is shameful, as I posted on their facebook page. They obviously don't care about it. I would absolutely not go to that tournament again, its just 40k (which is laughable as 40k is much more of a beer and pretzel game then WHFB). If there are a lack of tournaments there I would seriously considering trying to get one organized by the chumphammer group.

yeah went 4 wins then lost game 5 on table 4.

156 players and I think I was in the top 20 and top elf but they havent released the results, and have to wait a week!

its a bit of a farce. 40k had 45 mins of awards and build up. Warhammer had 5

all the 40k results got printed out

fantasy championship didn't

Now we paid for a tournament and not getting results is crap

..bit if a crap end to a great weekend

ye thats a disgrace. they've treated the non 40k players like second rate citizens. On their facebook page I had to scroll though ~40 pictures to find the first fantasy one... which was commented on as having a converted 40k model being used as a steam tank or something.

We done bud! It was great to meet you in person and nice to see a Star Dragon list do so well. I came a measly 104th overall (71st on BPs/paint) after I got 3 big wins and 2 big losses. I got 37/40 for sports but didn't get a favorite opponent vote and that dropped me almost 30 places in the overall score.
