The ancients liked colour. Dyes and paints were a luxury, especially so for the most vibrant ones. Rather much of the finer ancient stoneworks were decorated with at least some spots of colour in their heyday. I think we as wargaming hobbyists can sympathize with this: Would you rather have grey plastic or a painted army?

You mean the runestone or the women standing next to it? ;)

We indeed sometimes forget that old structures weren't always the drab and colorless stones and buildings we see now. I love walking through old ruins and imagine what it must have been like when everything was still standing. And every now and then you run into a bright, colorful display and it really livens things up.
