What are you listening to?

#1 Post by Myth »

Let's activate this sub forum!
I believe there was same topic earlier, but I can't see it any more.

Let's talk about the things we like to listen or you listening at the moment and want to share with all of us.
You can say few words why do you like that specific author/song or you don't have to say anything :)

I'm currently listening my favorite band and song (one of many favorites), Opeth - Ghost of Perdition https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MDBykpSXsSE

Opeth is progressive metal band who evolved by the time from progressive death metal to more strait progressive band.
Their songs have complex structure and include elements from heavy rifs/accords to acoustic parts and from growl to crystal clear vocals.

Mostly classical these days.

I know Aicanor for one is a metal fan and I have some old friends who are big Iron Maiden fans. I liked Metallica's old stuff.

I did not expect that based on your description. Interesting music.

For me at the moment an new band is The Slackers. Tipped off by a colleague. They're fun, laid back music. Great for background music.

Nice, post classic as well. Back in the days I was listening local radio weekend classical program. Cembalo was my favorite instrument and I liked a lot Bach and Handel work, although I'm not expert for such music. Maidens are classic already....'we' all started with them :) I also listen only first 4 studios from Metallica....Ride the Lightning and Muster of Puppets are anthology albums, still among the top HM albums.

It is hard to describe Opeth's music with just few words :)
If you are not too fond of metal rifs and growl vocals, they have numerous songs without those elements.
If you are interested to try it out, here are my recommendations:
Harvest https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bm5jm2joxuY
Burden https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FBS7ejV9qEk - this is already classic IMHO
Reveire\Harlequine Forest https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nIo3lpXrc5A
Will O The Wisp https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kfpnwk-DXrA
Windowpane https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xaHp2Tf49r8
Credence https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nt5_yybG9f4
Face of Melinda https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ybC6iBWLZ6k
Cusp of Ethernity https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JHq9yMXw3iA
(Last three albums are progressive rock without growl vocals. They even have one entire acoustic album Damnation)

Enjoy!

The older I get, the more I like him. As Nigel Kennedy said, he never wrote a duff note.
Myth wrote: Muster of Puppets
My favourite I think, with the ones either side just after. I saw them on the 'Justice for All' tour and they were brilliant, slightly less so on the next tour IMHO.

Metallica, SA? Have you got the new album yet? If so, what do you think?

I'm a Megadeth man myself, no hard feelings though!

Recently I've been listening to Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet. Must be the influence of the apprentice.....

I kind of lost touch to be honest.

That was old Dave Mustaine's band wasn't it? Is he still going?

That bit they call Dance of the Knights (Montagues and Capulets) yes? I suspect we'll be hearing his Troika a bit over Christmas! Check out his film score to Alexander Nevsky if you get the chance.

Oh yes. After he damaged his nerve in his arm it looked dodgy, but some excellent albums recently (except supercollider)

I'll certainly check it out, thanks. Actually just started learning Montagues and Capulets on electric guitar, sounds interesting.

Stupid tablet, couldn't get the quotes right. Anyway, you get the idea.

Lot of metal fans on this forum! Never realised, even after all these years.

So, Saturday night, I've been listening to some pearl jam. Challenged my children to work out the lyrics to yellow ledbetter! They got the part about boxes! Pretty good!

I've also been reading the boss's autobiography, interesting reading. I'll not spoil it for anyone that's not read it,but it's worth picking up.

Also, any Paul heaton/ Jacqueline abbot / beautiful south fans on here? I must have seen them more times than iron maiden.

Tunnel of love is also one of my favourites, very underrated. It is almost a concept album, charting a man's love life from hope to lust, through to happiness and finally contentedness. Have another listen and let me know what you think. I think the album gets better with age, almost deserves a thread of it's own!

Just because it's Saturday evening, thought I'd post here again.

Marillion this time, which is leading me onto so many things - the who, small faces, just because of the British eccentricity, dream theatre, rush and tool because 7/8 timing is for proper musicians!

Love to hear what you guys are listening to (see want I did there?).
