Stanley Cup Finals Game 7!!!

#1 Post by cidracin »

I was just wondering if anyone else is excited for Game 7 of the Cup finals? In my opinion the finals are the greatest event in sports, game 7 the greatest single match that can be played in the world. I think the NCAA tournament is the second greatest by the way, who doesn't love March Madness. Go Wings!!!

PS I know someone is going to mention the Superbowl and the World Cup

I can't believe my Red Wings didn't close it out in Game 6. Credit to Fleury. Though then again I thought Detroit was finished after their utter collapse in the second period of Game 4. Here's hoping...

No. It's too early. The World Cup is next year, around June-July.

Go Pens! Seriously, the Red Wings are like the Yankees of Ice Hockey. Its just not right to like them. Also, most of you probably don't know, tomorrow is game 6 of the Calder Cup, and it looks like Hershey will take it once more. This year's Calder Cup would bring us to having the most in all of the AHL.

Wait, Penguins the underdogs? Detroit was missing its MVP candidate for four games, and unless all the sports writers are wrong I've been told that Crosby and Malkin are the best players since Gretzky and are totally unstoppable. I mean, Crosby, The Next One, no one would ever DREAM that he might be shown up and contained by a guy drafted 210th overall and held to only one goal in the entire series...

But seriously, a lot of credit to the Penguins who have matured a great deal as a team since last year. They've earned this game 7 and it's gonna be dynamite. But I do object to the Detroit Red Wings being called the Yankees of hockey. Sure, they've each won four championships in the past fifteen years, but Detroit has drafted its talent. Zetterberg, who has shut down the great Sidney Crosby during the series, was drafted 210th. Pavel Datsyuk, MVP candidate whose return ushered in a 5-0 defeat of the Penguins in Game 5 was drafted 171st. Nicklas Lidstrom, the best defenseman of his generation, was drafted 53rd. When the Red Wings were hurt by injuries in this post season they elevated rookies from Grand Rapids to come up and play, guys like Leino, Abdelkader (two spectacular goals in the finals) and Helm who have been difference makers. Sure, the Red Wings acquired Marian Hossa in a firesale from the Penguins after they defeated them in the cup last year. But Hossa has done absolutely zippo in this series. Maybe the hockey gods don't want him to win a cup, because he's certainly not going to be a huge factor unless he turns in a monster game 7 performance. The Red Wings are a classy organization.

Pittsburgh the underdog when they have 2 of the best NHL player in Malkin and Crosby?

Both team are evenly matched but Detroit should win because unlike Pittsburgh, they have a good defense system and now that they are at home, they have all the advantage they need.

So, by you thinking Detroit should win, then you think the Penguins are the underdog, no? :?

Fair enough. But the Red Wings are like the Yankees in that you either hate them or you love them. There isn't any middle ground between the two. Its "OMG GO REDWINGZ 1!!!11" or "OMFG I HOPE TEH REDWINGZ DIE!!!"

I don't hate the Penguins as much as I dislike Crosby. It's annoying to have him paraded around as the face of the NHL and The Next One when against an actually effective two-way forward like Zetterberg or Datsyuk he just wilts. I'm fine with the Penguins organization, they're a great franchise and I think Crosby is maturing as a player but as his slash to Zetterberg's leg in Game 5 shows he's got a ways to go yet. And Malkin trying to fight Zetterberg at the end of Game 2? Lack of class. That's one of the things I can say about the Red Wings, they may have enforcers like Kronwall, Stuart and yes, even Lady Byng Trophy (sportsmanship award) nominee Pavel Datsyuk, you rarely see them engage in the kind of immature blow ups that characterize teams that they frustrate like Chicago or the Penguins in Game 5, both of whom ended up taking penalty minutes equal to almost the entire playing time. But, to the credit of those young squads, they both followed up blow outs with very impressive performances.

I say they should win because of the advantage of the ice, not because of the talents or the players. I said since the beginning of the season that Detroit would win the Cup, I'm just staying with what said ;) Otherwise I would probably say otherwise.

Actually, I'm a Flyers fan. I just don't like the Red Wings. If it had been anyone else in the play offs, I would have been cheering for them, instead of the Pens.

And Malkin wins the MVP? I was sure Fleury was going to win it. Oh, and for those who care, Calder Cup game 6 Hershey is up 3-1 with 4 minutes to go in the 3rd. They lead the series 3-2, so hopefully they can take it.

NOOOOOO!!!! The Wings lost :(

Great game though I got really into it. I can't bring myself to see Crosby lift the cup. It should be Lidstrom

And the Hershey Bears win the Calder Cup of the AHL. This gives them 10 Calder Cups, more than any other team in the League.

EDIT: And that gives Pennsylvania the World Series, the Super Bowl, the Stanley Cup and the Calder Cup for the 2008-09 season. Yay us!

All credit to the Penguins. There's no doubt that they beat Detroit. Maxime Talbot in particular really changed this series around. I'm not sure, did Pittsburgh even record a shot in the third period? The Detroit Red Wings came at them with everything they had, but Fleury denied them even in the final seconds.

I'm with Loki...I would've given it to Fleury, he won the Cup for them. Malkin has been a ghost since game four, and Crosby never even showed up. My personal theory is that the Hockey Gods, upset with the mercenary behavior of Marian Hossa, decreed that he would never win the Stanley Cup, no matter how well his teammates played. But, the Hockey Gods, also dissatisfied with Sidney Crosby, a vastly overrated player who had been exalted by marketers and a league hungry for recognition to the be the face of hockey, decreed that he would be a non-factor. His team would have to win him a Cup. And so, Crosby was removed from the most important game of his life to that point by Johann Franzen's monster check, to return for a pitiful shift in the third period.

Bah, I knew this thing was over after game 4...Everything that you thought could never happen to Detroit happened. The 5-0 game was just false hope, a wake up call for Fleury who came back and won his team the next two games. He should've gotten the Conn Smythe, Malkin, while a better player than Crosby, didn't deserve it.

For your grievous trespass of my post, I demand that you redeem yourself by publicly stating that Sidney Crosby is either a) the most skilled player in the league, b) The Next One, or c) both.*

Sidney Crosby, when he isn't playing a dedicated two way forward who outclasses him like Henrik Zetterberg or MVP candidate Pavel Datsyuk, is a pretty competent hockey player.

And if 'best' means 'most media exposed, probably because he can speak english better than Malkin or Ovechkin', then yes.
