Rock your socks off

#1 Post by findel »

Hello everybody,

I have a mission here. Something important, not to take lightly...

Recently I met some Chinese girls and after a little while I discovered, during random talking, that they didn't know Nirvana. I mean the band. My surprise was even greater when they were scratching and negatively shaking their heads at the Rolling Stones and the Beatles.

Mao might have burnt down every vinyl with his cultural revolution, but I hoped since then they could have open their border and to music again. But I seems they mainly know about Chinese pop straight from the devil's torture chamber.

So, I decided I need to help them by making the best rock (my favourite genre) CD ever.

It will be a mp3 CD, so possibility is here to store lots of stuff, but I don't feel the need to use the entire 700Mb. I just want the best. The only rules is, one band, one song, no more. So here is where I am right now:

Telephone - Un autre monde
ACDC -Thunderstruck
Aerosmith - Walk this way
Beach Boys - Surfing USA
Beatles - Twist and shout
Beck - Loser
Blur - Song 2
Cake - The distance
Chuck Berry - Johnny B good
Cranberries - Zombie
Deep purple - Smoke on the water
Deftones - Passenger
Elvis Presley - Jailhouse rock
Franz ferdinand - Take me out
Gun's and roses - Welcome to the jungle
Iggy Pop - Lust for life
Jacques Dutronc - Et moi et moi et moi
James Brown - Feel good
Jefferson airplane - White rabbit
Jimmy Hendrix - hey joe
Joan Jett - I love rock and roll
John Butler trio - Treat yo mama
Kings of Leon - The bucket
K'S choice - believe
Led zeppelin - Stairway to heaven
Lynyrd Skynyrd - Sweet home alabama
Metallica - Nothing else matters
Muse - Absolution
Nada Surf - Popular
Nirvana - Smell like teens spirit
Noir Desir - Tostaky
Oasis - Wonderwall
Placebo - Pure morning
Pixies - Where is my mind
Queen - Bohemian Rapsody
Radiohead - Creep
RATM - Bombtrack
Red hot - Under the bridge
REM - Loosing my religion
Rolling stones - Satisfaction
Sex Pistols - God save the queen
Steppenwolf - Born to be wild
The Clash - Should I stay or should I go
The Cure - Boys don't cry
The doors - Break on through
The offsprings - Pay the man
The police - Message in a bottle
The Smashing pumpkins - Tonight, Tonight
The White Stripes - 7 nation army
Trust - Antisocial
ZZ Top - La Grange

Will you help me in my holy mission?

also pearl jam jeremy and foo fighters the pretender and let it die or generator. apart from that it is a freakin good list

P.S. sorry if my spelling or grammer is bad but i am drunk and had to comment to expressd mty opinions :D

Maybe, Musashi, but this more of a mission than a attempt to date, I think.

Iron Maiden - Aces high, The trooper & Run to the hills

Manowar - Heart of Steel

AC/DC - Back in Black is better IMO.

Metallica; give them One. Easily their best.
RATM; I'd choose Guerilla Radio or Testify.
Deftones; Elite

Good luck on your mission, though.

ZZ Top should be Sharp Dressed Man
Bon Jovi - Living on a Prayer
Journey - Don't Stop Believing
Lynyrd Skynyrd - Gimme 3 Steps is a better song than Sweet Home Alabama
KISS - Detroit Rock City
Santana - Oye Como Va
RATM - Killing in the Name
Kid Rock - American Badass

Smells like Teen Spirit is the worst song you could choose to introduce them to Nirvana, hell its not even the best band you could choose to showcase that sound and era of music. You're also lacking the Who. Switch Beach Boys for California Girls, add/swap Walk this Way with Janie's Got a Gun. AC/DC should be Back in Black or Shook me all night long, Long Way to the Top, or all of them. Pick a better Beatles song. Its a crime not to play All Along the Watchtowers if you're including Hendrix. Use Bullet with Butterfly Wings for Pumpkins. Loki has a great list too take note of that.

Lots of good points, thanks you.

I will change ACDC's Thunderstruck to Back in black, you are right.
Nirvana could be a better song , Territorial pissings maybe, but i am affraid it's a bit too violent for a intruction to rock.
The choice on smashing pumpking was hard to make but I couldn't resolve myself to put Bullet with Butterfly Wings, and I also need some songs a bit more calm. Listening to heavy guitars for too long is boring. I'd like to make something possible to listen to it in one shoot, while having a talk with friends for example.

I haven't choose all the band and need to take out some stuff; by the way everyone told me to change some songs to others or had stuff but nothing to remove from the playlist.

And I also need to find the right order. I was thinking to put it chronologically but it could be by genre as well... Bref, lot's of work left to do.

It is not only my post, you can make your own which could be very inspiring.

Come as you Are, Heart Shaped Box, In Bloom, Lithium to name a few off the top of my head.

For Pumpkins, if I think about it a bit more; 1973, Today, In the Arms of Sleep (just for something different) maybe even Muzzle?

For a few other additions to your list try some Queens of the Stone Age, U2 (I'm not a fan of them myself, but if you're trying to expose them to more music) I don't think I saw Van Halen listed, chuck some of that in.

Personally, I'd replace
Lynyrd Skynyrd - Sweet Home Alabama with Free Bird because I think it is a better song and because it is mandatory to shout at all concerts :P
Metallica - Nothing Else Matters with Enter Sandman, mostly because it is the best known Metallica song (mind you I think Fade to Black is their best song, but Nothing Else Matters has been my favorite song for a long time)
and Oasis - Wonderwall with Champagne Supernova

I'd add in
Black Sabbath - Paranoid
Creedence Clearwater Revival - Fortunate Son because that is a great Vietnam era song :P
and
Alice In Chains - Man in the Box or Would?

Any song from Guitar Hero 3 or School of Rock. :)

More specifically, add in Prophetess-Lay Down, Jethro Tull-Aqualung, and your choice of Van Halen.

Metallica - Master of Puppets. It's been argued to be one of the best of the metal songs ever released.

Disturbed - there's only one song that needs mentioning: Down with the Sickness. Although if they translate the lyrics those girls might be too afraid to ever speak to you again...

Iron Maiden - Run to the Hills and Fear of the Dark are both solid.

Lob on some Opeth if you're looking for more mellow stuff.

Yeesh.

It was mentioned earlier - and it's pretty damned true. Just tell them to buy cheap used copies of Guitar Hero and Rock Band. They have pretty much everything listed, and it's more fun because you get to push buttons to the music. I guarantee they'll get some enjoyment out of the music then...

Personally, I think Metallica's best song is Call of Ktulu, but you should probably pick a song of theirs that has words. Maybe Whiskey in the Jar. For Van Halen, I think you might want to choose Ain't Talkin Bout Love. Definitely something with David Lee Roth, and definitely not Panama or Jump. You also might want to get some 80s Hair Music in there.

I don't know which songs should be taken off your list to make room, but here are some essentials:

More Than a Feeling- Boston
Layla- Eric Clapton
Teenage Wasteland- The Who
Carry On My Wayward Son- Kansas
Come Sail Away or Mr. Roboto- Styx

Oh, and you've definitely gotta pick a better (more mainstream/well-known) Beatles song. Hey Jude, Let It Be, Yesterday, and Hello Goodbye all come to mind.

All right, after much thinking on your advice (thanks by the way), here is what I came up with:

Out:
Cake - The distance
Franz ferdinand - Take me out
Iggy Pop - Lust for life
John Butler trio - Treat yo mama
Jacques dutronc - Et moi et moi et moi

In:
Serge Gainsbourg / Brigitte Bardo - Harley Davidson
Bon Jovi - Living on a Prayer
Santana - Oye Como Va
Jet - Will you be my girl
Velvet underground - Sunday morning

Change:
ACDC - Thunderstruck -> Back in black
ZZ Top - La Grange -> Sharp Dressed Man

Undecided:
RATM - Renegades of funk, Killing in the name, Guerilla radio
Nirvana - Territorial pissing, Lithium, In bloom, Come as you are
Metallica - Master of puppets, Nothing Else Matters, Enter Sandman
Oasis - Champagne supernova, wonderwall
Led zeppelin - Black dog, Immigrant song, Stairway to heaven
Radiohead - Creep, Just, Karma police
Rolling Stones - Jumping Jack flash, Paint it black, Satisfaction
Beatles - Back in USSR, Yesterday, While my guitar gently weeps, Revolution

I'd really much appreciate if you have opinions to share on my undecided songs.

And of course, we forgot one important band. Pink Floyd, and may I suggest Wish You Were Here.

Nirvana - Come as you are
Metallica - Nothing Else Matters (or One even if you didn't list it)
Oasis - Wonderwall - I get that it was overexposed and played to death but it is nearly required listening for a list of this sort
Led Zeppelin - Immigrant Song

And I second Wish You Were Here.

RATM - Killing in the name
Metallica - Master of puppets
Led Zeppelin - Immigrant Song
Beatles - Revolution

My suggestions:

Pink Floyd - Shine on you crazy diamond
Led Zeppelin - Whole lotta love
Metallica - Enter Sandman (Master when they're more advanced :P )

Rolling Stones - You can't always get what you want
Eric Clapton - Cocaine

Maybe some Deep Purple song as well?
