Bands/Singers you dislike?

#1 Post by Tuor »

Post the bands and singers you dislike and why

Note: This is about the music, not the musician(s)

Here are my personal hatreds:

Aerosmith: Their lead singer sounds like a cat with sever bowel distress

Led Zepplin: They can't sing, the songs are anti-climatic and dull

Rascal Flatts: Need I say more?

You are going to get ripped up so hard.

But it really just sounds as if you dislike rock music, which is fair enough.

As for me, I dislike most modern rock, rap and pop. There's a fair deal of good modern metal out there, but the genres previously mentioned have become ridiculously stagnant and boring. I hesitate to name anyone in particular, because it's the norm in those genres to be rather boring.

On a personal level, I dislike Bono. He's ridiculously self-righteous about his charity efforts when the system he derives him wealth from is linked directly to poverty in other countries. That is, his efforts will be realised around the time that he's no longer wealthy. I wonder when which he'd really prefer? I know this thread isn't for such things, but it's so ludicrous and hypocritical.

One of the first things you should learn as an adult, trying to engage in a discussion, especially on likes or dislikes, is how to dislike something without saying its bad. I don't like Aerosmith, but Stephen Tyler can sing, I love Led Zepplin and I know Robert Plant is an amazing singer. So I'm not really sure how you base your decision on whether or not people can or cannot sing.

You like rock, but consider both Zeppelin and Aerosmith, benchmark bands of the genre, to have poor singing? It would be interesting to know what you consider to have good singing, just for comparison's sake.

I consider good singing to be someone who doesn't screech like a cat with severe chronic bowel distress

Singing in a higher register isn't screeching. Do you think Freddie Mercury can sing?

A difficult question. I tend to notice bands and singers when their music is good; when their music is bad, I hit "Next". I could probably pull up a long list of excellent singers, but hardly even one name on the list of bad ones.

That being said, I'd have to say Noodle.

This highly subjective, not only individually, but also retrospectively. Stuff that I liked before, I might not be able stand now.

The thing is that technical skill at an instrument (including voice) is an objective measurement. Let's apply this to a different context:

Steve Vai is a highly skilled guitarist. This is not debatable, as he is one of the most technically gifted guitarists on the planet. You may not like his music, but that doesn't prevent him from being an amazing musician.

In threads like this, we have to draw a clear line between what we consider bad technically and bad subjectively.

There's a difference between "bands I dislike" and "Bad bands".

I would say calling Led Zeppelin a bad band is ridiculous. But saying you dislike them is fine.

Saying you like "Rock" at this stage is like saying you like "music". Rock is a massive genre, and it would be normal to like a lot of rock, while despising other music still classified as rock. I mean, Counting Crow and Nickelback are both "Rock" bands. But, liking one in no way means liking the other.

Music I dislike: Acid House and Hard Trance. I like some dance and electro sounds, Matthew Dear, MGMT, The Knife and the likes, but the harder stuff leaves me cold. Maybe it's my distaste for pills... :?

50 Cent, the Game, etc: I like Jaz-Z, and Dre and Snoop Dogg have their moments, even Eminem had a couple of good tunes, but some of the latest attempts at rap are downright annoying. Fort Minor are where it's at.

Beyonce: I don't get it. That new song about getting married? It's pretty much the exact opposite of Independent Woman. Can she do that?

Arctic Monkeys, The Kooks, Kaiser Chiefs: Brit Rock has some amazing bands. And some that I just can't listen to. Is it just the accent I don't like? Maybe. I mean I like some obnoxious sounding bands, but I can't abide those three. Despite the obvious lyrical talents of the Monkeys at least.

I still haven't heard a good reason why you think that Led Zeppelin is crap. A good technical reason.

I love the credit but sadly I'm not a singer nor a band. I'm a vocalist, which is quite different since I cannot sing.. At all.

I have a severe disliking for Cannibal Corpse (and most other bands that use that kind of unaudible vocals), AC/DC (and the like) and most rap/pop artists.

Korn, Cannibal Corpse, etc.... metal bands that are more scream than sing. Precisely the reason why I only like a few songs by Killswitch Engage.

Modern pop singers... Justin Timberlake, Jason Mraz, and the whole bunch.

And then there are some bands where I really like one album and dislike another.

I think this thread is pointless...

I mean, we should make a difference between technical capabilities and taste. You can find bands that are awesome at what they do, but if you don't like the style, you'll say they suck. Simple as that.

Even Backstreet boys are good. What, good you say? yes, they're good at what they do: sing cheesy and corny pop songs for horny teenager girls. If you're not a horny teenage girl you'll probably don't like them.

Let's take for example Meif's dislike for Freddy Mercury: He doesn't like it, because it's a matter of taste, but technically you can't argue that Mercury's falsetto was one of the best of the rock/pop scene, but he was also very versatile.

Sometimes, arguing about music is worst than politics/religion. Be very careful with that.

Anyway... I'm going to listen some Parliament Funkadelic...

Gwen Stefani - If I were No Doubt's other members, I would have been fed up with Gwen from the very start. To have most of your music accomplishments be mixed and associated with a singer who constantly pouts and baby-talks every single word? It'd drive me mad. Don't get me wrong, they have some really good stuff, but there are a lot of B-sides and filler songs that would only fly on an album with a pretty-face to front the covers. She can be great 15% of the time, and darn near horrible every other time.

Kurt Kobain - Someone give him a sip of water. I know his voice was tailored for the grunge movement, but it's just very one dimensional without much range at all. In my view, he had a prime outlet for musical expression, and despite the opinions of many other people in regards to Nirvana's overall success and influence, one can't help but wonder if they had actually put forth some effort or embraced the musical spectrum in a more dedicated manner.

And as far as weighing in on the Led Zeppelin debate, I'm of the opinion that they are a very good band. But I'm also of the belief that they are also quite overrated. I don't think they're absolutely iconic to rock and roll, but they are a fixture nonetheless. Personally, it's a rare thing for me to want to put on one of their albums and just listen to them - most of the time they find their way onto a playlist.

This is very wise. I find myself trying to remember such sage thinking myself on many occasions. To continue:

Very true also. Furthermore, there is something to be said for objectivity towards "stylistic virtues", meaning an approach that isn't necessarily classically beautiful, but fits the mode of artistry. Still not sure that in any way justifies extreme metal, but for what its worth...

In lieu of a longer post (which to the annoyance of some will arrive at some point), I'll start with these bands, which I think stand out as being either terrible in their own genre or simply annoyingly oversold by hip music magazines, or of particular distaste to me:

Billy Ray Cyrus (author of possibly the worst "popular music" song of all time)
Buggles
Limp Bizkit
Korn
The Used (unquestionably the worst emo band I've ever heard, thoush I avoid them like the plague)
Tool (hate me, go right ahead, but I dislike their sound and songs, anything with their frontman sucks)
The Doors
The Kinks
The Strokes
The Kooks
The Red Hot Chili Peppers (their latest record is tolerable, but I really dislike their sound)
The J Geils Band
The Electric Light Orchestra
Journey (one of the worst bands of all time IMO)
Motley Crue
Britney Spears+Jessica Simpson

Whoever did "Mambo no 9" (or whatever did that horrid song I heard in my short time in high school) deserves a mention too.
