Babylon Scenes From Movie Intolerance (1916)

#1 Post by Karak Norn Clansman »

The movie director D.W. Griffith's strange and highly expensive film Intolerance from 1916 is to date the only movie featuring independent Babylon that I know of. Fantastical sets. There are elephant sculptures in there for some reason, but overall it looks rather brilliant in black-and-white, or perhaps aged sepia.

Check out its Babylon scenes sometime for the visuals! (The only Youtube videos with only-Babylon-scenes have atrocious video quality.)

It looks interesting. It must have been very impressive for its time. Complete with visual effects and all.

Can't argue with that of course. ;)

Intolerance weaves together four stories: the fall of Babylon in 539 B.C., the crucifixion of Christ, the St. Bartholomew's Day massacre in 1572, and a modern-day tale involving labor disputes, poverty, and being wrongly accused of murder.

Many old movies - from the very beginnings in the 1910s to the 1980s - can be found here: www.rarefilmsandmore.com
The bulk are from Germany, but they also have plenty of others, some are subtitled.
They are technically region 0, but play better the older your DVD player is - because lasers were more powerful in the beginning. They don't make 'em like hey used to....
I just watched Eine Handvoll Helden (a handful of heroes), a surprisingly good movie about a small band of Prussian soldiers tasked with defending a mill against the French after the battle of Jena.
