The Manglegut Tribe - Ogres sneaking into Ulthuan!

Hey folks

I've started Ogres as a welcome change to the fragility of Elves and I'm creating a blog to help with my play and with creating a competition worthy list for tournaments in 2014.

I won't be able to make any changes for two months as I'm away (without my books  ) but I wanted to get the list up for now.

The Manglegut Tribe

Slaughtermaster (Lore of the Great Maw)
Lvl 4, Fencers Blades, Glittering Scales, Dispel Scroll

Butcher (Lore of Beasts) 150 pts
Hellheart

Bruiser
BSB, Heavy Armour, Ironfist, Crown of Command, Rock Eye

9 Ironguts (Chars here)
FC, Standard of Discipline, Look-out-Gnoblar

8 Ogres
Musician, Ironfists

4 Mournfang Cavalry
SB, Musician, Heavy Armour, Ironfists, Dragonhide Banner

3 x 1 Sabretusk

6 Maneaters (Scout, Stubborn)
AHW x 3, FC, Gleaming Pennant

2 Ironblasters

2499pts

I am aware that ogres are likely to be comped like other armies will but I don't know which tournaments I will be able to attend as yet. I will make changes based on the comp later on.

The first recorded bat rep using this list can be found here on page 2 of Elithmar's Blog.

Looking forward to C&C from Ulthuans finest.

That looks pretty reasonable. 9 ironguts seems overkill with 3 characters in the unit.

Just for giggles, this is a flying carpet MSU ogre list I saw at a tournament recently

*************** 1 Lord ***************

Tyrant, General
+ Great Weapon, Heavy Armour
+ Arabyan Carpet, Talisman of Preservation, Charmed Shield
- - - > 327 Points

*************** 2 Heroes ***************

Bruiser, Lookout Gnoblar
+ Great Weapon, Heavy Armour
+ Potion of Strength, Talisman of Endurance
+ Battlestandard Bearer
- - - > 200 Points

Firebelly, Great Weapon, Level 2 Upgrade
+ Ruby Ring of Ruin, Dispell Scroll
+ Lore of Fire
- - - > 214 Points

*************** 4 Core Units ***************

4 Ogres, Musician, Standardbearer, Champion
- - - > 150 Points

4 Ogres, Musician, Champion
- - - > 140 Points

4 Ironguts, Musician, Standardbearer, Champion
- - - > 202 Points

4 Ironguts, Musician, Standardbearer, Champion
+ Standard of Discipline
- - - > 217 Points

*************** 7 Elite Units ***************

1 Sabretusks
- - - > 21 Points

1 Sabretusks
- - - > 21 Points

1 Sabretusks
- - - > 21 Points

Looks alright Caradryel. But a few questions:

No runemaw banner? I think putting that on your BsB (he can hide in the second rank anyway) will help keep that Gut Star into combat rather than getting magicked and shot to hell.

What's the point of the 8 Ogre unit? It doesn't seem to be filling a role particularly well and looks more like free points at this stage.

The Maneaters. Scout and Stubborn are an interesting combo. Why did you want a 6 strong Scouting Ogre Unit with AHW? I think the best Maneater Scouts are with Sniper and pistols to try and pop wizards early in the game...

Just some thoughts!

It probably is to be honest mate and I might even drop this down to 6 Ironguts + Chars. This would free up some points to beef up the Bulls for a second fighty unit.

This list looks like a lot of fun, how did it perform? I'm guessing ETC comp?

The lack of ironblasters or a level 4 is certainly unusual but I do love those stonehorns :D I'd expect an MSU list like this to have a slaughtermaster though to take advantage of the bubble Maw spells.

Thanks for reading and the comments :)

Good question. The only reason I didn't include the banner is so I could buff the Guts with maw magic. With the banner I wouldn't be able to do this, or have I misunderstood it's rules?

I'm probably going to try heavens on the Slaughtermaster in the next game and the buffs it provides will really help the unit so I need to be able to cast on them.
Malossar Dragonborne wrote:What's the point of the 8 Ogre unit? It doesn't seem to be filling a role particularly well and looks more like free points at this stage.
Yeah your right, I have been considering this ever since Elithmar's spears managed to break them. The heavens magic would definitely help though. As I said above in the reply to Rabidnid I will juggle around the core points to I can beef up the bulls unit somewhat.

The thinking behind it was to hold up a unit so the guts or bulls could combo charge it. Popping wizards sounds like a fantastic idea to push the game in my favour and I may indeed try that combo if I can find the points.

Thanks for the comments. Food for thought! :)

It was a dare written by another player for someone her had never run ogres before. 25th out of 70 players. swedish comp of about 11. Ironblasters don't seem that common locally. Played two ogres at the tournament. My frost phoenix ate the one iron blaster in the first list and the other guy was running 2 scouting units of maneaters. lvl 4 with fencers blades on the other hand is pretty standard.

Ogres make me miss Vauls Unmaking, my record in a single tournament game was i 'unmade' hellheart before he used it, crown of command, then dragonbane gem on his general who charged my flaming seaguard. I run dragons now, double ironblasters makes me shudder again. Nice list, those man eaters are remarkable when used well. No stonehorn, which i like. I actually don't rate stonehorns, for their points. With their base size, its very easy to play tricks with redirectors and overruns etc, not to mention how many attacks you can put on it.

Yeah it's a pretty standard build for the Slaughtermaster by all accounts but it's so good it would be silly not to.

I'm going to see how the Ironblaster's go. At the moment I'm having no luck with them whatsoever #-o but then that's the same for any artillery I've ever tried :P

They may get swapped out further down the line for some Leadbelchers or more Mournfangs.

Heh I miss the ring of corin too!. The pendant of Khaeleth or that VC item that stores dice are always a problem without it.

I don't rate stonehorns either. I'd rather take 3 Mournfangs over them. Like I said to Rabidnid above I think I'll give the IB's more time before I get fed up of them blowing up every game. To date they've killed very very little

Based on some of the comments I've received I have redone the list with a few changes.

Slaughtermaster (Lore of Heavens)
Lvl 4, Fencers Blades, Glittering Scales, Dispel Scroll

Butcher (Lore of the Great Maw)
Hellheart

Bruiser
BSB, Heavy Armour, Ironfist, Crown of Command, Rock Eye

7 Ironguts (Chars here)
FC, Standard of Discipline, Look-out-Gnoblar

9 Ogres
SB, Musician, Ironfists

4 Mournfang Cavalry
FC, Heavy Armour, Ironfists, Dragonhide Banner

3 x1 Sabretusk

6 Maneaters (Scout, Sniper)
Ogre Pistols, FC, Gleaming Pennant

2 Ironblasters

2496 pts

I'll probably end up changing something slightly as having 4 points left is making my OCD twitch :P

Changes I've made

1) Changed the Slaughtermaster to Lore of Heavens. I want to give it a whirl as the lore of the Maw is really boring IMO. It has some nice buffs and debuffs and a great magic missile in the form of Chain Lightning. Comet I can't wait to test out :D

2) Butcher changed to the Lore of the Great Maw because he has to. Gives me a guaranteed spinemarrow at least which is a cheap enough spell to cast.

3) Changed the core around a little. Mainly to give the Bulls FC ad an extra rank.

4) FC on the Mournfangs makes them a touch more dangerous and gives the ability to challenge.

5) Gave the Man Eaters Pistols and sniper over stubborn. Going to try some mage hunting :P

When's the next game with the Ogres Caradryal? I'm keen to get mine out for a run but don't know if it would be a flavour of the week thing or a 'career' shift in Warhammer.

I'm away for two more months now mate so it's likely to be mid october by the time I get around to it :S I'll get a bat rep up on the next one though.

Something else you need to take in this list - new artillery dice! Really, you should get some new ones.

Isn't that the truth!

I'm considering just using the ironblasters as overpriced chariots to save some embarrassment :D

I managed to make a 2400/2500 list I'm happy with, when you're back we should knock heads on UB sometime.

:D More testing required, but if my current IB luck continues I may drop one for a small unit of belchers
