Anyone got good supporting Prince builds?

#1 Post by Yvran the Prince »

I'm writing an army list (might post, but not for a while) and it is all done apart from a Prince. Since any Prince build I write turns out crap, I'm wondering if anyone has a good one they want to share with me. Coupla restrictions though.

1) No Dragons. Don't have the points, don't have the model.
2) Chariot, horse, eagle or griffon. Mobility is key, so flyers are best.
3) Some form of bow. Magic one preferably. He has to be able to thicken the fire and every little helps!
4) It would be good if he was a Mage Knight, but not necessary.

And that's it! I'm looking for a Prince that can support a charge, but one who can also get to where he needs to be mostly alive. And yes, I have read Spellarcher's Chariot Prince Tactica.

You probably haven't gotten a reply to your topic yet because it is oddly in the 7th edition army lists section of the forum (which people understandably don't check anymore). Do you plan on using the 7th edition rules with the army you are writing? Because that will have quite an impact on how a support prince is used. In 7th a prince on a monster could have a decent chance at breaking a unit by himself. Now in 8th combined charges are the only way to go.

I'm going to assume that you're building a prince for 8th edition.

First off, your requirements: It's pretty much impossible to have both a magic bow and be an effective mage knight. The only build I can think of that would have moderate success is Prince, barded steed, dragon armour, shield, lance, Radiant Gem of Hoeth, Reaver Bow, and another 15 point magic item (probably defensive because all he has is a 2+ armour save as is). However, if you want the reaver bow, then why bother with a prince? Just put it on a noble and then who cares that he has bad defense? He's not your army general and doesn't have to be in the center of the army to give his leadership bubble (and he's much more likely to survive running along the flanks where he can maneuver and avoid the nasty stuff).

That said, I'd be inclined to use the Bow of the Seafarer on a prince if you want him to lend shooting support. If he's mounted on a flyer he can then go around the flanks and use the Bolt Thrower shot to its full potential. A flank shot on a unit of heavy cav with the BotS is a wonderful thing. If you want to use him for this then a great eagle or griffon is the way to go (I'd probably use a eagle if I wanted the best choice, but we all own the awesome Island of Blood griffon model, so in reality a griffon is what would see the field). Setup would be something like BotS, Helm of Fortune, DA, sh, lance, and 15 more points to spend on a magic item (honestly, I'd use the talisman of loec even if it is rather suicidal).

Hope that helps!

Thanks, your set-up sounds very good, I'll give it a try this weekend. Regarding the fact that this topic is in the wrong forum, there is a very good reason. It was an accident #-o . Do you know any way to move it?
Also, I meant the magic bow/Mage Knight thing to be different options, (i.e. I needed either a normal Price with a magic bow, or a Mage Knight with a normal bow. I agree, having both is just thick.) And yes, my Noble does have the Reaver Bow, but I would take it off him if someone came up with a good Prince build using it.

You're welcome.

I like Armour of Caledor, GW, Radiant Gem (Life), Dispel Scroll, Luckstone on a Griffon. You select Earthblood and use Lifebloom to heal the Griffon.

Grant's build is risky but interesting. I'd definately spend the last 15pts on the Opal Amulet.

Yeah, I gave grant's build a go, and he crippled two hordes of clanrats with a bit of help from my archers, then died and lost me the battle.
I'm thinking of downgading to the reaver bow, and spending the leftover points on some protection (Dragonscale Shield+Vambraces?)

Radiant Gem, Reaver Bow and Jewel of Dusk with death lore. Place him into a unit of Shadow Warriors thus he can march and shoot nonstop. run around, kill big stuff with shooting and magic. he does not fly but is still very mobile. just keep him out of combat and he will make the enemy very mad :)
