High Elves for 8th edition, first draft

#1 Post by Angel »

I'm working on trying to convert my 7th edition list to 8th edition with as few changes as possible so I won't have to paint a ton of new models again.
I have a couple of issues at the moment that I'd like some input on:

1. Is a cheap noble with just DA and a GW viable or will he just die in turn 1?

2. Is a unit of 5 naked DPs still worth it? Everything else in the army is infantry except for a couple of chariots, RBTs and an Eagle. Would the points be used better to boost the size of some of the infantry units instead?

Here is the list that I have so far:

Characters
Archmage (260 pts): Level 4,
Probably Lore of Shadows
Noble (143 pts): Battle Standard, Great Weapon, Armour of Caledor
Noble (99 pts): Great Weapon, Dragon Armour

Core
10 Archers (110 pts)
23 Spearmen (250 pts): Full Command, (some banner)
14 Maiden (Sea) Guards (193 pts): Full Command

Special
14 Swordmasters (295 pts): Full Command, Talisman of Loec, Standard of Balance
14 White Lions (255 pts): Full Command, Standard of Dicipline (+1 Ld)
5 Dragon Princes (150 pts)
Tiranoc Chariot (85 pts)
Tiranoc Chariot (85 pts)

Rare
Repeater Bolt Thrower (100 pts)
Repeater Bolt Thrower (100 pts)
Great Eagle (50 pts)

Points level: 2250 (75 points left unless I miscalculated something)

The basic plan is for the spearmen (with BSB), the Swordmasters, and the White Lions (with noble) to form the main line. One chariot will deploy between each unit to act as support. The Archers will probably deploy on a flank and the Seaguads on the other, or on a hill if one is present. The DPs deploy on one of the flanks.

Spookily similar to my own new-look Core!

Maiden (Sea) Guards for the win!

I'm wondering on the viability of 5 Dragon Princes myself. I will try them for now, but are a more of a support unit than ever.

My thoughts on your list.

2 mages is better than 1 and the noble in my opinion.
I would try and get a ward save on the archmage though, or at least MR, theres a lot of sniping spells out there now.
Your sea guard, swordmasters and white lions are way too small to survive more than 1 turn in combat in 8th. A shame, but with only your big block being spearmen, at least one of these will be called upon for frontal assault as well. Even with ASF and rerolls to hit, you'll still be taking a lot of attacks back, and against numerous foes, the maths are not favourable for us High Elves.
Personally I'd bump up the sea guard as much as possible, or maybe even just change them to spears in larger numbers. As for the elite units, it may be a case of choosing one or the other and having more in the unit....

I've also put the flaming attacks banner on my sea guard unit.... for 10pts and the way regeneration works now, its surely a bargain.... soften up hydras, varghulfs and the like first with flaming sea guard shots (lots of them too) cause 1 wound and regen is gone for the phase! Then its RBT time!

I must admit that I'm slightly worried we will suffer the numbers games more than before...
