Do you think the Maiden guard will return in the HE 8th edition Army Book? What role would they fill? Would they be special or rare choice?
Do you think GW can make HE female models that don't look like a transgender rearrangement that went horribly wrong?

I think, I recall, reading that there is only 100 maiden guard at any one time. Is that sound right? A tour of duty(as a maiden guard) is typically as short as 7 years? That seems really short for the long lived pointy ear gals.

The maiden guard seem like a really cool unit to field. I think the Maiden Guard were in our army books in the 6th ed? or 5th edition maybe? I wasn't playing then so not sure.

Anyone know why they weren't included in our latest book?

They're not in our current book because they came with Alarielle, the Everqueen. And we don't have her in this edition, soo...

We last had them in the 5th ed book, they were also in the 4th ed book, and were also an option in friendly games in 6th ed (the rules were on the old "good and downright better" GW site).

GW has the skill and capability to easily and greatly make female elves, from the top of my head there are Witch Elves (including Morathi), the female Beastmaster, The Fay Enchantress (yes she IS an Elf), Female Wood Elves (I think there is at least 2-3 female models for every unit), All the new Dark Eldar (Wytches, Lhamaean, etc).... and the list goes on..

You might be confusing the 100 at any given time to the ever same 10,000 of the Phoenix Guard...

I do think they will make a return, but only if we get Alarielle aswell, as they are on the most part, a package deal.

Well I was being facetious about HE female models looking "butch". Example of a Citadel/GW model(scroll down a little bit to the blonde):http://worldhistoryprof.blogspot.com/2010_10_01_archive.html

I agree the newer models are a much improved. (Probably due to the finer detail quality of plastic and fine cast)

Why does the Everqueen have to come with the Maiden guard. Do the Maiden Guard never venture away from the Everqueen's side?
After all white lions are the Phoenix king's personal guard and we don't have Phoenix King Finubar stated out as a character to field. And most Phoenix kings have gone into battle personally. Something which the Everqueen seems less likely to do, unless under siege as has happened in the HE lore.

Not sure how official-cannon this site is( from the miniature game standpoint); but from on hammerwiki they say the maiden guard is 100 strong. http://warhammeronline.wikia.com/wiki/Maiden_Guard
Looking through my web history, I found the site I read that number 100 first: http://whfb.lexicanum.com/wiki/Maiden_Guard

Anyways you said they were in the 4th and 5th books what kind of stats and special rules did they have?

It were the male elves who complained that their women were making them look like sissies ;)

nah, it's because the target audience is, generally speaking of course, not in the least interested in scantilly clad females, who are also great sculpts. I can't imagine those models selling well to say 15-25 year old guys at all :?

That, and GW wanted to encourage the second hand market of course :)

5- Anyways you said they were in the 4th and 5th books what kind of stats and special rules did they have?

1- That's a really bad comparison, being from a 25-30 year old model and from the time of Marauder.. :? Clicking on the link I thought it would've been this one: http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?prodId=prod1130324

2- I assure you, Fine Cast is anything but fine... some people may like it but I don't and for good reason. Plastic would be (and is, IMO) much better.

3- Well, the "Maiden Guard" are actually called the Handmaidens of the Everqueen. They don't leave the side of their mistress and they have only been obtainable when including Alarielle in your army in the first place, they were never a seperate unit choice. White Lions are of much greater number, esp if we go by 100 Maidens,.. pit that against the "extremely rare" Pheonix guard that number 10,000 and White Lions IMO would number at least 20,000. White Lions also have a life outside of 'being the Phoenix Kings bodyguard' as they hunt the fowl beasties from the Annulii, amongst others,.. And the Maidenguard doo not have a life outside the Everqueen, she IS their life.

4- Good find. :)

5- From the 5th ed book.
16pts/model
M5 WS5 BS5 S3 T3 W1 I6(which would be the equivelant of I5 now) A1 Ld8
Weapons and Armour: Light Armour, Spears & Longbows.
Banner of Avelorn: any unit wishing to charge them must pass a Ld test or they can't move.
Horn of Isha: lets them fight with 2A in close combat or fire twice in the shooting phase, one use only.
They had the Citizen Levy special rule, which is our Martial Prowess and the current rules for Shooting in two ranks.
They also had Hatred should the Everqueen be killed, and had Immune to Psychology when she was with the unit.

How many Maiden guard were typically fielded? Was it a viable choice back in 4/5th ed. or more fluffy? The immune to psychology would be useful, plus the extra bow or close attack is neat.

Also I am not sure I agree with your testimony about the handmaidens never left her side. One of the above links that define the Maiden guard duties reads; the Maiden Guard (Handmaidens) were also advisers,(envoys) and messengers.

I have no idea how many white lions number, could be 20,000. The white lions are hunters, but doubtful they hunt when acting as personal guard to the Phoenix king. After all, it seems a long distance to get from Chrace to Eataine when your liege needs protection.

4th/5th were herohammer. I started playing on 5th edition when 14 years old or so, and I pretty much fielded a mega commander on Emperor Dragon, an archmage and lots of RBTs (the limits were 50% on heroes of any kind, 25% on warmachines, and that's it). I was young, ok? don't judge me >.<. The rest of the army didn't matter that much. In addition, unit costs where fairly high compared to the current standards, so you fielded enough Maiden Guard to put Allarielle in it and not much more. Allarielle was pretty fragile (although awesome, in heroehammer, because she healed friendly heroes wounds and was a 4th level caster), so it was pretty much a bunker. Anyway, High Magic had a pretty good spell which protected the mage, so sometimes they weren't even used.
