Blue Smaug

#1 Post by WhiteWeaselStudio »

Hi, everyone!

As a mercenary commission painting company, we are always eager to get interesting and challenging miniatures, those that you only paint once or twice in your lifetime. Today we are glad to share with you our last commission: Smaug the Golden from Games Workshop but not so golden this time…

When our customer contacted us he really surprised us with the color scheme he wanted to apply on such a special miniature, blue instead of red! We suspect he wanted it to play an alternative wargame because although we painted Bilbo, he did not want this model to be included in the scene. Of course the painting standard should be our highest one 5/5 “General” since such a piece of art really deserves it.

So it was decided: blue for the dragon skin, a cream/bone color for the wings and belly and a black alabaster effect for the Dwarf columns and floor of the base.
No doubt this is such an alternative Smaug. How do you find the scheme? Would you apply something different? Maybe the classic combination? Please leave your comments below!

Heresy! Blue?!?!?!?

Kidding. While I do think dragons should be red, you did a great job within the comission guidelines. He looks epic. The wings work especially well for me with the contrast between the light color and the darker blue.

What was the model like to work with?

Hahah yes! We also got surprised when our customer attached the painting scheme he wanted. I mean, I think we all have a pretty defined Smaug in mind ;)

If you are considering getting a Smaug, you must take into account the large size of the figure and its heavy weight because you are going to spend many hours working on it and it is not always easy finding a comfortable posture. You must also paint the wings and base separately. On the other hand the quality of the resin is far better than the average Finescast. In fact we suspect that GW hired an alternative company to produce this model.

Thanks for your comment!

I think the Smaug model is made by Forgeworld, which is the "exclusive" model branch of games workshop. They've got some very interesting models, and from what I hear their casting methods are pretty good and much better than the Finecast GW uses.

I did for a very brief moment consider getting the Smaug model. And then I saw the price tag and I stopped considering it... ;)
