If you could get any GW model...

#1 Post by Prince of Spires »

What would it be?

Case is fairly simple. I received 2 GW gift vouchers (about a year ago I think). And I would like to get some fun models for them. I have all the HE models I need to field a nice army (though more is always better ;) ). And since I'm as much a modeler / painter I'm looking at what to get.

So, I'm turning to the collective mind of U.net. What would you get if you could buy any GW model (needs to be a GW one, since they're GW gift vouchers...)? And I'm interested in the why of course :)

Any model? At all?

I would get the Smaug model from the Hobbit/LotR line. It's massive, a showpiece, and would challenge my painting skills.

For practical purposes, I think I would get the new Alarielle model on the giant beetle. See above reasons with the added bonus of actually being able to field it should I play AoS.

All that aside, my other choices (in no particular order) would be the "Chaos Gargant" (aka giant), Mortis Engine, or any of the other "big fancy showpiece" type models just for the fun factor of painting them.

For that price you could get an entire new army though!! If I had that budget I might well start a new Goblin Army... Or an Empire Army (I've always had ideas about how I would build/model both of them).

For a single model; either a Black Dragon, an Arachnarok, a Mangler Squig or a sniper with a Hochland Long Rifle

But knowing me that would end up being either;

a) More dead dark elves
b) The beginnings of a Goblin Army
c) The beginnings of a Goblin Army
d) The beginnings of an Empire Army

:P
Bring me my bow of burning gold, bring me my arrows of desire, bring me my spear O' Clouds unfold, bring me my chariot of FIRE!

This is tough one to answer.

I need to split the answer in few categories:
- Most desirable High Elf model: old Alarielle cause I haven't bought her while she was available and now I miss her in my collection :(
- Most desirable available HE model: I would go with Phoenix or Skycutter
- Most desirable GW model: Megaboss on Maw-Krusha

Overall, IMHO most impressive GW model currently is the Archaon (Smaug is simply out of competition).

Black Dragon
From newer models - Thanquol on Boneripper, because... Thanquol :D
Tiranoc chariots, because they are best conversion material
Knights of Rivendell
Any other (metal) LotR model I like (too many to list

There are also some nice terrain sets available for Warhammer or LotR (Ruins of Osgiliath, Garden of Morr or even that Ophidian Archway that looks exactly like Dragonlance portal to the Abyss).

OMG Smaug yes!

But I assume your vouchers won't stretch that far, so...

Something like the arachnarok, or the mortis engine set, or (I'm a sucker for it) the plague cart (I'm getting confused with names these days, but the undead thing pulled by zombiiiieeeees), or the big elephant from LotR, or something wierd and wonderful from FW (does that count?) like the maw worm thing, or...

Well, anything that's a show stopper jaw dropper really :)

steam tanks. That plastic steam tank kit is everything plastic kits should be.

When I thought you meant "any" I was going to go with the standard and musician from the lotharn city guard from the 80s. Still missing those. I have the officer and champion, along with plenty of the grunts, but the standard and musician still elude me.

If I were to buy a model (from the currently available range) just to assemble and paint it it would be the Terrorgheist - such a thematic miniature!

Some great models mentioned here. I had completely forgotten about Smaug  Indeed, my vouchers won't stretch that far...

I'm thinking towards the arachnarok and some of the terrain kits (the Osgiliath ruins, garden of Morr or Ophidian Archway are great) which are always useful) to have. I also like the Mortis engine kit. So much bits to use in conversions and terrain pieces. What's not to love :)

@Shannar: which musician / standard bearer do you still miss? The guys in the front row here:

Or different ones? Just curious in case I run into them somewhere (ebay or the like...)

We're talking mid-80's.

Shannar, were those of the vintage that came 10 to a box with one special guy and nine R&F? I'm thinking maybe not because the very earliest Regiments didn't have Champion models. First two guys have that furry look that typified one of the HE ranges.

It probably doesn't count, being Forgeworld but I'd go for the Chaos Dwarf Dreadquake Mortar. Epic stuff!

I know it's cheating and doesn't help Rod, but I always thought this was the coolest model:

That's exactly what they are, which is what makes it a pain to piece them together. The store I could rarely get to had one set in the 80s, and I picked up the other plus a few more rank and file off ebay. with time I'll find the other two, but it get frustrating sometimes.

Apparently this: http://www.reapermini.com/OnlineStore/k ... 1prototype

Edit: Smaug is beautiful model indeed, but as I have no way to fitting it into my display cabinet, there is no point in getting it. :(

I was wondering if it was a reaper. I hadn't seen that one before though.

As to smaug, I'm not convinced he'd fit though the door of my game room.

Guys, don't let dedication here - easy solutions 101:

1. bigger cabinet
2. bigger doors

:D ;)

Ah, I see my problem then. My gaming room (and thus cabinet) is getting smaller, not bigger...

Does smaug actually have in game rules? Or is it "only" a display piece?

No idea about smaug, but I'd be tempted to get some terrain to show your models off on. I've just got the ruins of osgiliath and my cabinet looks a whole lot better than just having 10 shadow warriors stood in a clump.

Anyway, if you do grsmaug, post some pics, it is a lovely model.

I will indeed go for some terrain. I gave it a long thought and I can use some more terrain for my gaming table. And I still have more then enough model on my todo list without adding more to it. I'll go for a ruins of Osgiliath and a garden of Morr set I think. They're both great, modular pieces which can really add to both a display case and a gaming table. I'm now just wondering if the Ruins of Osgiliath multi-pack will come back in stock or if it's permanently 'temporarilly out of stock'...

Thanks for all the suggestions :)

That's at the moment still available in the Dutch GW site (and the "other europe" one). So, good chance of it coming back I guess.

When I read the post I also though "any" GW miniature so my mind went back to the old High elf Lord on Pegasus (always missed that in my collection). I think it is a wonderful miniature and remembers me when I got hocked up with the hobby.

Memories aside I would go for the Eldar WraithKnight. I am working on my eldar army and that is an amazing, impressive on tabletop and expensive miniature...
