Doctor's Warriors of Discord

#1 Post by Doctor »

I started painting my second army, Warriors of Chaos.

High Elves are still waiting - most of them are in a different gaming location and I still have to decide on the final painting scheme. So I'll learn on WoCs for now, who don't need to be as neat as the elves :)

Some WIP shots of a test Warrior of Tzeentch model I'm currently working on:

Looking good. I think the colours should work out quite well.

But mostly I just wanted to comment on the paint bottle, don't see many of those any more. Is it still good? I have one (red actually) that's still useable. Sadly the rest have been used up or gone hard.

Looks good - the blue in particular works well on this model, but the style is captured very consistently across armour, boots and sword.

Thanks for the comments :)

I still have a few old bottles (I had more, unfortunately I've thrown away some of them). Then only not dried out is a black wash one.

The painting scheme is inspired by some Warriors of Tzeentch I've seen on the net.

I have to learn how to make good pictures of the minis (though this one is rather photogenic and looks quite natural on them)

I had a hexagonal Goblin Green that just went on and on for years.

This dude's coming on really nicely Doctor!

I wasn't convinced at first with only the basecoat, but the washes made your model look real good.

Some more WIP shots of the Chaos Warrior test model.

This is my first ever attempt at airbrushing. I basecoated and washed the shield just like the armor and then covered everything except the chaos symbol with the liquid mask. The idea is to make the symbol shine like it was burning hot or something like that. The end result isn't nearly as vibrant as I'd like, but it's not bad either.

The process though wasn't very successful. It was hard to remove the liquid mask (maybe I let it dry too much?), I even left it in the middle. Some paint came off with it and generally it wasn't clean. Maybe reversing the process would make it better?

I then airbrushed multiple layers of different shades of red and orange (also white as the last layer).

Anyway, liquid mask drying:

First layer, Vallejo gory red:

Bloody Red:

Hot orange:

Orange fire:

White (and maybe a bit of yellow before, I don't remember):

Removing the mask:

Not a clean paintjob, right?

After retouching, highlights, some extra glazing with washes:

It looks a bit cleaner, live. Maybe I cleaned it a bit more, or the photo just exaggerates the flaws a bit.

I'll experiment more, when I find time for it. Maybe different colors or more contrast, maybe a first attempt at some simple free hand?

So this is how he looks with the shield (and his head :) ) in different lighting conditions. He still needs some highlights (mostly on the sword, which isn't finished). I'm satisfied with the painting scheme, though I'll experiment a bit with different models to add variety.

I think I'll make him a two weapon guy, so the original paintwork on the armor won't be covered.

Looking great - a bit like the colour scheme Grey used on his WoC.

Looks good mate. I think with such a bright blue you could afford to go with brighter purple highlights on the cloak. It can be tricky for it not to become too pinky, but hopefully you know what I mean.

Damn, all the images not online anymore. I guess I have to find a better image hosting.

Funny that I play with my elves but paint (slowly) the chaos guys :) Their painting scheme was inspired by the Dice and Brush guy's one (though some colors are different).

I guess I like the colour blue :D

Some chaos warhounds. Unfortunately I suck at taking photos of miniatures, so the drybrush looks much worse than in reality (more gray and flat). Also the wet-blended horns look a bit better. Next five will be different - blue fur, which has more depth (but I have to figure out what color should I use on the horns).

Thanks! :)

BTW I've just started painting my Frostheart Phoenix - this will be my first model painted with the aribrush. Unfortunately I've bought it assembled, which makes some things quite a lot harder ;)

Unfortunately so far it went rather bad. At first I had no problems, but than it went wrong (the airbrush started to clog, then overspilled). I also realized that my lighting conditions are far from being good enough for airburshing (with a standard brush it's ok, but with the airbrush you have to see where exactly the paint is going to have control). Of course I realized it when it was too late. Also the fact that the model is glued together makes painting the wings much more difficult.

I'll wash/glaze it anyway so maybe the end result won't be that bad, but I'm pretty sure I'll repaint the model in the future. Maybe I'll basecoat it all over again and try once more? Anyway at least I'll learn something new :)

The air brush does take some experience from what I hear but its worth the effort, especially if you're looking to paint in bulk. No everybody likes that blended effect, but it sure does seem to speed things up!
