Mordheim - The City of the damned

#1 Post by Rhawtir »

Hello good people of Ulthuan!

I thought I might share a buildning I just painted for Mordheim. I've been thinking of running a Mordheim campaign with my friends since I haven't done so for about 10 years. So I've been collecting a lot of buildings (more than 10 or 11 at the moment) to build a city scape with. The best quality buildings I've found thus far are from Tabletop World.

Here are some pictures of building I painted from that same company.

The theme of the inside is hell, earth, and heaven on their respective floor levels.

If you have any concept ideas for what kind of buildings or terrain features you'de like to see in a city of the damned, then please tell me, and if you have a picture or drawing of the idea, please post it. I need all the help I can get! And more pictures of houses will be coming later on.

See ya!

Very cool! Did you paint the freehand in the inside before assembly?

Actually each floor comes completed as it is, but separate from the other floors, so that all in all there are 4 separate pieces for the entire building. The different floors and then the roof. I had to adjust my hand to a pretty funny angle while painting the inside, but I like my terrain to have some kind of idea behind it all so it was worth it.

Thank you for your comment! Have you got any ideas for terrain suited for Mordheim? =)

I scratch build my own (and also sell a lot of it on e-bay). I really like the table top world stuff, except for two issues. The first is just the cost, they are amazing, but you pay a ton for them. The quality is probably worth it, but money isn't unlimited. The 2nd is that they just aren't "ruined" enough for me. And given point 1, I don't have the guts to damage them up.

True. Very expensive, and being a student I usually only buy stuff like that when I've got some surplus of cash, or during the summer when I work. And the same goes for me, most of my terrain I build but I felt like the main buildings would be nice having in really high quality. I've always loved Mordheim and when I started playing when I was about 14 I built most houses out of cardboard but in the end they started falling apart.

I agree they should sell more models which are ruined. That way they could sell some for a lower price tag. But personaly I like having some buildings that are intact. I want my campaign to be set mere days after the comet struck the city, with remains of the festival littering the ground. It would also be nice for some human warbands to be formed by survivors and could have some quest to perform when the city was not yet ruined and thus such buildings could be great.

Thanks for the response! If you have any ideas or such, please share =) Will be posting some miniatures soon!

And here are some of my terrain with the start of my witch hunter warband included. The bases are not yet done, though, but I hope you like them. They are based on Brettonia men-at-arms and empire militia.

Just superb Rhawtir!

I love those mediaeval buildings where the upper floor overhangs the lower. Went to Tallinn once and saw a bunch of them. Maybe a Hanseatic thing?

Great looking building. More pictures are always welcome. Also of a whole table covered in terrain. It often has great atmosphere.

As for ideas besides buildings, anything city related could work. Having some smaller stuff on hand can really help setting stuff up in an original way. Things like fountains, barricades, a town square, a little park or a few trees for next to a street. It both adds some nice details and some extra cover.

Something to create some height difference in the city can also help. A few taller buildings (tower, castle, city wall/gate, dungeon) helps mix stuff up a bit.

Hello again!

Thanks for all the respons and ideas. I completed another building today, I hope you like it. :) Also, if you have drawings or examples of with pictures of things I could add to the city, I would love it. I have some scupting skills so intricate things are also welcome.

And here is the building anyway!

Thanks again guys!

Here comes a slight update of the stuff I'm working on.

Image

There are some of the buildings, done, not yet done, and ruined, thus far.

Image

A sculpture I've been working on, a statue of Sigmar. I spent a night learning how to paint marble-effect to paint it as such. What do you think? =)

Image

I am aware the right arm is a tad bit short, but I'll fix that later on!

More pictures to come!

I like the statue. Looks great. It stands out a lot from the grey and drab town buildings. Nice contrast. It still deserves a good base.

As for other things. How about a house with a walled garden / courtyard? Offers some nice game options and is slightly different from the other buildings.

The biggest thing I think would help you out is scatter terrain. Boxes, barrels, broken wagons etc.

Hah, about the Sigmarite circumcision I would say no. But being made by a sculpture from far away to work on the statue of Sigmar in Mordheim, the artist had som exotic taste.

And thank you all! I have been thinking about how to complete the statue and what to do with the base. Do you guys think I should go with a marble-base or a stone coloured one? And I think I will go with a not so elevated but broad base for the statue.

And I like the idea about having a walled garden.. That could offer players the chance to hide miniatures close to their enemies without revealing their position. And I've also been thinking about how to solve the issue of having some grass in the city. Like, I want a graveyard, but perhaps that should be more like trodden dirt than grass? And what about trees? Should they sprout out of the paved stone, or be left on some patches of grass left for them to grow on?

Thanks again for all your inspiration and... Questions. :D

For grave yards I've gone with catacomb entrances, makes more sense in a large city. As to trees, I'd say on grassy areas left of them. Even really old crowed cities have areas like this. Usually near churches and the like.

I would go for a stone base for the statue. It's already fancy enough I think. And the statue doesn't need more height I think, so I would indeed go for a broader, lower base.

I think Shannar has some good points regarding graveyards. They're less common in inner cities. Though there are some. They tend to be more crowded and have a relatively high amount of crypts (those little houses, whatever you call them) compared to village cemeteries. Also, I can imagine that in a law-less and violent city like Mordheim some people decide to bury their comrades in the first available patch of dirt.

If you're going for a Mordheim just after the comet struck, then I would keep your parks and nature areas relatively tidy. A tree takes a long time to grow. Even more so if it has to grow between paving stones. Paths and roads remain visible for a fairly long time after nature takes over. So any decently sized tree would have been there before the comet struck.

Here comes a slight update.

So I made the arm of the statue a bit longer, and I know it's not all that correct in terms of proprortions, but it all kind of started at just some work in clay with no goal, and then it turned into this. And once I got going I wanted it to look a little like one of those really old greek statues, like before the classical times, just after the bronze age crisis was over, like Kauros of Melos. Strict, simplistic.

Anyway, so I've been thinking of something for Sigmar to hold in his left hand, but I don't know what yet. I sculpted an orc head, but orcs usually don't have hair for Sigmar to hold it in, so I put it at his feet. What should he hold in his left hand?

Here are some pictures, anyway!

I've had some issues with Sigmars face so far. It always turns out looking like Lenin. We'll see if I can solve that.

For generations Lenin has sat immobile at the Kreml, watching his beloved sons turn to madness and decadence. But as the old alliances fall apart and and era of disorder and chaos dawn upon a happless mankind, Lenin can sit idly by no more.

And yes, I guess it goes in the same line of like Sokrates and such, always portrayed with aged faces yet the bodies of some kind of demigod. The base isn't all done, but I think the base will go in dark stone, with the details on the base, orc face and all, being bronze. Same goes for the hammer. Still note sure about the left hand.

As I woke up this morning and looked at the face of the sculpture I've made I knew I wasnt pleased. I could do better. So an hour ago I started making a new face. Less skew and more realistic, with more details and better eyes. I wanted a slightly aged Sigmar, shouting with a commanding voice, that will fit the theme for the statue and the city.

So here's the result.

Image

The left one is the first attempt, so you can see how much I actually fixed the proportions and details.

Image

The profile.

Image

And posed up with the friendly inhabitants of the city of the Damned!

I hope you like it, I am much more pleased with this version. Although it looks slightly like Ivan the Terrible.
