Ulthuan.net 8th edition P&M guide to the Asur

#1 Post by Jimmy »

Updated – 21/6/13

Hey guys

Well I’ve started a tactical guide to the Asur so I’ll start on a painting and modelling one for the other half of the hobby as well which is something I’m far more confident about and have a lot more experience in.

Please comment and help build this up to eventually become a valuable sticky thread and a great resource for new and old players alike.

Basically I want to cover themes, GW High Elves, alternative miniatures, products that can help us out, inspiration and lastly the best online stores to expand out armies.

Theme

Firstly I’m a huge sucker for theme in my armies so I get pretty passionate about it. Research parts of your army and what models you like the most and work out a theme for your army and most importantly stick with it. Whether this be a scouting force from Chrace, a Caledorian Warhost, or an invasion fleet from Lothern it can all fit into an army and we’ve arguably got the best plastic kits in the game at the moment (price tag exclusing of course) so the theme, modeling options are endless. At the end of the day however it’s your army so add what you want, from a list point of view I think the safest bet is to play test a unit a few times before making a decision on it. Some theme ideas include with some possible pre requisites:

Caledor Warhost (Dragonlord, Dragon Princes, Dragon mage)
Army of Chrace (White Lions, Stubborn Prince, Lion Chariots, Griffon, Eagles)
Seaguard force (Seaguard, RBT’s, Eagles, Skycutters, Seahelms)
Seer Council of Saphery (Archmage, Mages, Swordmasters, Loremasters)
Tiranoc Charioteers (Characters in chariots, chariots, silverhelms, eagles, lion chariots)
Keepers of the Flame (Phoenix Guard, Annointed, Phoenix)

Where to start?

Most new players are probably looking at the Island of Blood boxed set and thinking “Wow awesome looking models and a kick arse monster”. With the new book the Reavers have become a core choice giving you a capable legal force to play games with so that’s something. Also it gives you models to paint and practice on which is never a bad thing. Quick review:

Griffon (Plastic)

It’s a very cool looking model and every new player generally wants a centre piece to their army and could certainly be used in a themed force. Secondly I have seen some talented modellers remove the rider and use the griffon as a ‘counts as’ great eagle or Phoenix which is a great idea if you’re skilled enough. With the new book the Griffon can be a mount for a noble which is always a cool option and if you like flying monsters in your army you can cram them in.

Mage (Plastic)

Great model and every list should have one or two however I wouldn’t buy the entire box for this. Search eBay instead.

10 Seaguard (Plastic)

Great models with full command but you’ll probably realise in the game you won’t’ be using them that often. I’d recommend for a new player sticking with archers and sharp sticks. Once again if you’re sticking to a theme then by all means include them.

The IoB boxed set contains 10 seaguard with full command however you can pick up the models fairly easily on eBay or other trading services and online shops to increase the units size.

10 Swordmasters (Plastic)

Full command come with the swordmasters and whilst I love the unit there are probably other elite infantry choices you’ll take over them in the game. You can source these fairly easily on eBay for a bargain without investing in the whole box though so keep that in mind. They are a great plastic model and pretty easy to paint as well.

5 Reavers (Plastic)

Opinions have changed radically on the Reavers seeing as they’ve been moved to the Core selections making them infinitely useful for delaying tactics and all sorts of annoyance. You’ll certainly use these.

Conclusion: IoB

If you’re a new player then it’s not a bad starting point to get the boxed set and trade off the dirty rats for more elves.

Units

Lords/Heroes

Prince (Plastic)

GW currently has a Prince/Noble boxed set which contains enough parts to make a prince/noble on horse and on foot. It’s got a great option of weapons and trinkets and overall is a very nice kit to work with I feel so if you’re new to the game you’d certainly be wanting to pick up one if not two of these immediately with an army purchase. GW also have a dragonlord boxed set which contains enough parts for a single dragon and a prince/mage/dragon mage models, this boxed set also has a selection of good bitz to outfit further models and use on unit fillers so it’s a good investment although not required immediately.

Archmage (Plastic)

GW currently have a Mage kit similar to the prince/noble and this has a fair few options in it for a mounted model as well as one on foot so once again this would be somewhere near the top of the list of purchases in a new army and will add some more bitz to the ever growing collection.

Noble (Plastic)

The prince/noble kit has components to make a BSB and the detail on the banner itself is pretty cool. If you pick up two kits then by all means stick one on a noble elven steed for some future good times. Once again a definite buy on the list.

Mage (Plastic)

Archmage/Mage boxed set covers this.

Dragon Mage (Plastic)

A wonderful model however not crash hot in game terms. I would highly recommend magnetising all the riders so you can switch them out but you’ll probably only need the prince.

Loremaster of Hoeth (Plastic)

Another wonderful addition to the 8th edition book and a semi decent model as well. Some people aren’t a fan of the jellyfish hand other’s don’t care. He suits the Swordmasters very well with their current incarnation however.

Annointed of Asuryan (Plastic)

You can get this bad boy from the Phoenix boxed sets and no doubt pick him up online for a fraction as well.

Seahelm (plastic)

Comes with the Skycutter kit and is a pretty cool model.

Core

Spearelves (Plastic)

The models in the current range for spear elves is somewhat of a let down and a box will get you 16 models with command options. These models are close to 10 years old I guess, they’re severely out of proportion and a personal peeve of mine is their scale armour looks somewhat outdated when stood next to any of the new elites. Your options here are to wait for GW to release new core which would probably be with the next army book at a guess or simply proxy seaguard and use them as ‘counts as’ models for the time being. If you can get some cheap 4th edition spearelves they could be good stand in models for the time being but beware you may get sick of the static pose.

Archers (Plastic)

The GW boxed set although dated still stands up in comparison to the rest of the range and is a good kit to work with. Buy two of these boxes and in games under 2500 you probably won’t need to buy anymore. It comes with all the command options and 16 models however you probably won’t need to assemble the champion and standard unless you’re going for the horde. Either way you’ll get 32 models with two boxed sets so go wild. Tip for young players however, archers can be a pain to rank up so ensure you get the units ‘footprint’ sorted out before gluing anything down.

Seaguard (See above entry)

Silverhelms (Plastic)

The models are an old boxed set for 8 models however I think they hold up. Once again with the new book the general opinion on these guys has changed and many of us can wipe the dust off our models and start using them. A solid choice and core to boot.

Ellyrion Reavers (Plastic)

As above

Special

Dragon Princes (Plastic)

I personally don’t have any of the new plastic dragon princes so I can’t comment however I do like them and by the looks of the sprues they come with some great options and trinkets and the usual command options to make up 5 models. A box or two of these are certainly a must for new players I feel.

Tiranoc/Lion Chariot (Plastic)

When I first saw pictures of this model leaked online I was so excited and it immediately became one of my favourite models in the entire range, the Lion chariot is great for a themed army from Chrace and the model is cool enough alone for a purchase. The chariot kit contains enough parts to create either a Lion chariot or a Tiranoc chariot and plenty of goodies left over which ever way you go.

White Lions (Plastic)

I don’t have any of the new plastic models for the white lions and am running last editions metal models which are still fine I think and no doubt will eventually invest in some plastic models down the track. Each box contains 10 models with options for commands and the usual bonus trinkets.

A word of warning however when it comes to assembly, the new plastics can be a nightmare to rank up correctly so once again take that extra 30 seconds with every model to ensure they’re positioned perfectly in the unit.

Swordmasters (Plastic)

See my entry above about them.

Phoenix Guard (Plastic)

Another fairly new plastic kit for the High Elves, I love the unit and have a block of the old metal models but I think I would trade them up for plastic any day of the week purely because I think it’s easier to work with. The usual 10 models to a box with options for everything.

Shadow Warriors (Plastic)

The new shadow warriors look great. Dual kit with the Sisters of Averlorn so you’ll have a lot of bitz left over which ever way you go with.

Skycutter Chariot (Plastic)

I’ve only glanced at the model but when I see a model like this I have phobias of it toppling over and snapping the flight stands, and there is two of them.

Rare

Great Eagles (Finecast/Metal)

Some of my favourite models in the game probably because they’re awesome in the game as well. Certainly pick up 2-4 of these as you’ll come to love them with the new options they have.

Repeater Bolt Throwers (Plastic)

Another good plastic kit from GW with a few trinkets however get the eagles first and then worry about them!

Phoenix (Plastic)

The new flying monster typical of all 8th edition releases. They look fantastic to paint but awfully fragile at the same time. They seem to present a lot of solid options in terms of list strategy and builds as well and typically most tournament armies I’ve seen constructed house at least one. This kit also comes with the anointed model.

Sisters of Averlorn (Plastic)

Dual kit with the Shadow Warriors so you’ll have a lot of bitz left over which ever way you go with. Not sure on how I feel about the female heads though, could be just GW’s paint job.

Forgeworld

Worth a mention, they don't have a hell of a lot of warhammer fantasy stuff and no High Elves however with the release of some supplements they're steadily increasing their range.

www.forgeworld.co.uk

Movement trays

The GW movement trays are probably one of the best products they sell and at a reasonable price tag to boot. This gives you the options to make movement trays for your lovely ranked up models in any configuration you want. You’ll definitely want to purchase a few of these and they should cover your army. I’m lucky enough to work with sheet metal workers and often get .9mm gal sheet cut up into custom sizes and then stick down to the movement tray for the purposes of magnets which if you’re a serious gamer it might pay to look at.

Magnets

I love putting magnets onto models for the sake of completeness. Not only do you then eliminate models falling off trays or if your champion/mage dies and you have to remove that one model from the front rank and save it from dragging other models out as well it also creates the options of switching arms on prince/bsb models but also allows you to change riders on dragons which is handy. For bases of plastic models I’d recommend using 3x2mm rare earth magnets. For metal and cavalry models you’ll want to go slightly larger. To adhere the magnet to the underside of the base you can either use green stuff or some other plumbers putty to house it. I’ve seen people just glue them to the base but I’ve never had too much success with it.

Alternative miniatures

Don’t get trapped into thinking that GW are the only miniature company out there, do some research and ask questions. I for one would recommend the Gamezone range of eagles over the GW ones, they’re a bit more fiddly to put together but their poses look sensational and they have the size that I think a great eagle should be so ask questions!

Army Tray/Transport

If you’re planning on taking your army to tournaments or over to a friends place for a game then I would certainly recommend picking up some sort of tray to carry them all in. If you can get a metal tray then you can be canny and put magnets into your movement trays so once you pop them in the tray you’ve got a fairly secure transport option and they can enjoy the car ride on the floor without too much heart ache.

Army cases are also a good option and although I don’t use mine anymore at all because of the tray and magnets there are a tonne of different options out there from custom trays and text through to stock standard foam cells. Either way do your research and make the investment as it will save much heart ache over a cardboard box and foam/tissue paper.

Unit Fillers

You may have seen or heard this term and wonder what all the fuss is about. Basically 8th edition tends to be about big units and rather than outlay all that cash to have a unit of 40 miniatures you can substitute some models with some good looking unit fillers. I personally just use 40mmx40mm bases in the elf units so it counts as 4 models. Go nuts and put anything on this base whilst trying to maintain a theme to the army. Some people like unit fillers and others think it takes something away from the spirit of the game which I agree if a unit filler is taking up anymore than say 20% of the unit. I’ve seen people rock up to games with units of 10 models and the back rank is just a fence……how exciting.

I’m a big fan of statues, weapon caches, and anything that fits in with the army and this really gives you a chance to get creative and add something eye catching to your units.

As usual though be sure that the unit filler fits well and doesn’t interfere with models ranking up, there’s no joy in creating a masterpiece only to discover it doesn’t fit where it should so leave the big statues and large unit fillers on the rear corners of the units is probably the best bet.

Assembly

Very basic but an often overlooked subject. I would recommend for a beginner to assemble one unit at a time, that’s clip it off the sprue, test fit, clean off the mould lines (very important) and glue together then check the ranks again. Sharp hobby knives, clippers, and a set of small files will be great and see you through the whole hobby.

Paints

Once again there are quite a few options when it comes to painting so don’t be restricted in your choices.

http://privateerpress.com/formula-p3/paints
http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catal ... ints-tools

Inspiration

It’s so easy to embark on a new project and then just burn out because you’ve either gone into it way too quickly or you’re just lacking inspiration. It happens to us all and I often get caught up in it and need to re-focus. The best bet I find is to browse the painting and modeling forums. There are some very talented artists on here and the work they produce is phenomenal but once again don’t restrict yourself just to this site. Secondly I also find if I look at different tactics and play styles that it also boosts the inspiration levels to get more done or try out different things.

Lastly if you’re lacking motivation, have a game. I often find that the more I game the more I want to paint (provided I win of course!! :-p) so find your balance point and adjust as required.

Some great inspiration to be had at these links:

Scenery

I’m a huge fan of good terrain, nothing inspires me more than fighting on a table and the scenery looks just as good if not better than the models themselves. If you need the ‘complete’ package then I would recommend investing some time in making good terrain. GW do product some good terrain if you’re an empire or chaos player but anything in between I’m afraid we’re left out in the rain. The only GW products that are generic in terms of terrain are the hills and forests which are both good buys. If you want some more custom and themed pieces then you’re going to have to get creative. High Elves architecture in particular doesn’t have a lot of hard square edges so it can become a bit of a nightmare to replicate. Once again if you need ideas then go to the warhammer age of reckoning website and have a scour around because they have some awesome pictures that will serve well.

Gale Force 9 produce some good scenery that fits in with our army in the form of elven ruins and an elven tower which are both nice pieces.

Where to buy?

If you’re still reading then well done. If you’re going to endeavour down this road of plastic addiction (aka plasticrack) then you need to know where to get your best hit. There are a lot of answers but the number one recommendation I would give anyone is don’t shop at GW for a number of reasons. Obviously the first one is the price, they charge like a wounded bull, and the staff can be very forthcoming and intrusive ‘in your face’ style of sales which is off putting. Secondly if you support your local games shop who often sell at a slight discount then you’re putting money into the local gaming community and no doubt the local tournament leagues as well for better prize support.

Ebay is a fantastic option for picking up new and used models as well, often you’ll get some real bargains on there but beware of any metal models as there are some crafty people who sell re-cast models so it’s probably best to stick with sprues and plastic models.

I’ve put together a very small list of suppliers I know of in different countries that are worth mentioning however if you have more then please list them or PM me and I’ll add them to the list.

Cheers for the comments guys! :D

If anyone has any useful links at all then please feel free to contribute and I will add to the main post.

I plan on adding more details to the paint section for a bit more details on the ranges out there and where to source them from.

@Tiralya - I've used bitzbarn in the US before and had no dramas so keep that in mind when doing another order.

I would add the rather large market of custom terrain and scenery, but moreso the main topic of how to make your own, where to get materials etc.. Especially the inclusion of the very elusive high density polystyrene.
Also Sir James, it would be good if we could have all links and such in the first few posts (mainly yours), so that it's much more neat. I'd be happy to compile some stuff and links and add them to the posts, but I don't want to step on your toes too much.

Also, this isn't really a DRAFT anymore ;).
And it's getting rather sticky in here...
Sincerely,
Kitlith

I would advice you to put forgeworld along with the 'alternative miniatures' sites. I suppose lots of people aren't too familiar with their fantasy products, but their range is quickly improving.

Also, I would suggest formating stuff a bit better and include a table of contents, for readability :)

Keep up the good work mate!

Magnetizing Trays and Minis

I've recently done some work with my army, going through and magnetizing all my movement trays and putting all of my minis on magnetic bases.

I find that the Gale Force Nine magnetic bases work amazingly well for most all of my army. The packs of 20mm bases are 10$ for 36 bases. Somewhat expensive, but I find it's worth it.

However, do not bother with GF9's adhesive magnetic pages. $10 USD gets you 3 5"x8" pages. Instead, turn to Hobby Lobby.

http://shop.hobbylobby.com/store/item.a ... mId=159579

These are the same magnetic strength (rating of 2), and for only $3 USD, you get 1 - 5"x7", 2 - 4"x6", and 2 - 3.5"x2.5

The combination of the GF9 bases and magnetic (strength 2) strips are enough to hold down any of my plastic models, but metal minis are another problem.

The added bulk of metal minis make them more difficult to work with. I suggest getting a set of Rare Earth Magnets. I bought a few packs of 1/4" strength 9 magnets, and drilled into my metal Swordmaster's bases, and glued them in. (Use a much much smaller drill bit at first to go through the base the first time, the smallest you have, and use it as a pilot hole for the 1/4" bit)

Image

Between the magnetic base, the added power of the rare earth magnets, and the magnetic strip on the tray, I can turn an entire metal unit upside down with no models falling off the base.

Hey Jimmy - I was just reading through this again, and nice work, btw! One thing is though I think it is in thorough need of an update for our new book!
Stuff like saying reavers may not be used much - now they're core.

Indeed it almost seems as if GW knew that in the future reavers would be core... Or that for example that griffon rider could now be a noble...

Very nicely done, sir! I am not sure if I am not out of place by asking here, but I have a question. I have magnetized my minis with Rare Earth Magnets and now I have a problem with the surface I want them to stick to. There are magnetic foils and colours sold in my country, but every single of them has a warning, that a Rare Earth Magnet will cause the demagnetization of the foil/colour. Therefore I got a bit desperate. Does anyone have an experience with this? I see that some of you are recommending using magnetic foils so it baffles me a bit. Thanks in advance for an advice.

I just glued a thin steel plate onto the bottom of my movement trays before i spray painted them. That way it gets the right color and you hardly notice the difference in height.

Thats what I was about to do, but I would rather prefer to use some foil than steel sheet. Its easier to work with. :-)

You're right. Time for an update.

I'll get right to that but will certainly ask for the assistance of the community as High Elves haven't been my main focus for some time now so please be kind for any errors I make.

Guys please let me know if you'd like to plug any suppliers that you like or you'd recommend.

Updated - please provide feedback

Hi guys! I need help! I adore modelling, I'm working on building now and I need to buy some separate parts or the building. Does anybody know some sites where it's possible to order? I've just found this. But I'm not sure that they can make it by order. Did anybody use this site before?
