#31 Post by Loriel »

Long time since an update. I decide to take a part in Yaktribes 13th modeling / painting comptetation (https://yaktribe.org/community/threads/ ... -the.4663/) as it was perfect excuse to paint my flamespyre phoenix. I haven't builded this model, but i received it as a birth day gift from my friend mantsa! That was real sweet. It was build from IOB griffon, Flamespyre phoenix parts and with gs. Here is link to my friends blog if you want to see how it was made. http://mantsa87.blogspot.fi/2016/03/don ... spyre.html

Here is link to my imgur album with the phoenix progress so far. http://imgur.com/a/I9hWf

The phoenix looks great. Thanks for posting the detailed painting pictures. They make a great guide.

Good luck with the competition. Let us know how it goes.

Indeed. Very ambitious. But very much worth the effort. I've once put a fully painted 3500pts list on the table and it looked great. How big is the battle going to be points wise do you think? The models are starting to look great. What are you aiming at fielding?

And of course, pics or it didn't happen ;)

This isn't guite exact list. One problem is that some of my figures are at our gaming club and some within random boxes i own. For example just couple weeks ago I found out a box where I had stored about 15 old metal swordmaster. I quite frankly have no idea when i have aquired them but hey, there is a lot of random boxes in my storage room :D I have never sold a single figure in my life and I have collected these for about 20 years. I also bough most of the figures second hand.

Here is roughly what I own. (and prince no pics for the time being so didn't happen)

Core
25 x silverhelms (about half unpainted)
30 x iob seaguard (about ten unpainted)
~ 100 spearmen (more or less painted. most of them with very simple colors, (and I don't count my monopose spearmen :D )
~ 40 archers (all painted)
15 x IoB reavers (5 good painted, 5 simply painted, 5 unpainted)

Special
35 x phoenix guard (10 unassembled, 22 painted, 3 unpainted)
.... 40?? x white lions (I might actually have more of them. about 20 old style and 20 new style)
~ 100 swordmasters (i have something like 70 IoB swormaster, about 50 of them unpainted, and 30 old metal painted)
3 tiranoc chariots (1 unsabbempled, 1 simply painted and 1 painted)
1 lion chariot (semi painted)
1 skycutter (semi painted)
5 dragon prince (fully painted)
9 shadow warriors (painted)

Rare:
2 x RBT (unpainted and painted)
1 frost phoenix painted
1 fire phoenix painted
10 sisters painted
4 x great eagles (painted, but not based :D )

1 unopened phoenix box :D (prolly trying to do both fire and frost)

characters:
Tyrion (unpainted)
Teclis (unpainted)
Allarielle (the old one, painted)
Alith Anar (I know I own the model, but I haven't seen it in years. Either it is lost, or extremely well hidden... which would be really ok "fluffwise")
Korhil (this is actually conversion, I had the old korhil but somehow lost the body but his weapon had survived. so technically its a hero with that special axe :D )
Seahelm
Mages ... I say that something like 10-15? I don't know new iob, old metal mages on the ball and on stones, mounted)
Heroes ... old archer hero, couple axe + shield, noble on mount, lord on mounts, bsb, annointed,
Prince on dragon
2 x iob griffons (allthough I most likely use one of them to make another flame phoenix)

-------------------

I allready decided that I aim to have most of them painted before our grand battle, with atelast minimalistic paint job.

That's an impressive list of HE models. And a lot of paint work still ahead ;) If you do manage to get them all on a table in a battle at some point I would love to see pictures. It must look great on the tabletop.

As for the demons: heresy! Burn em, burn em all! or something like that ;)

Haven't being too active lately. The same old pooring excuse "real-life gets in the way of hobby". :D

Well good part is that we have scheduled a date for the massive game. its going to the 11th of march. Sad part is that there is NO way I am able to paint everything I own in this time, but it doesn't matter.

Image

Now for the timebeing swordmasters are going on hold. I still have some of them unpainted (as well the old metal ones), but quite frankly I am really pissed on the bloody model right now :D it is time to paint something else for the battle. So I turned my effort to get 10 extra phoenix guards. I allready got them assembled and started to paint a bit of them. I then hit a wall. I was almost 100% sure I used gehannas gold for the armor on my earlier PG, but I failed to get the same shade as I have my earlier guards...

I know! I am starting to get really excited about the game. Too bad there is still too many unknowns and sadly many of the players in our group have tentative attendance. Thus we decided that we are going to have the armybuilding done right before the game as we know how many players we have and roughly how much figures we can field :D

On the other hand this starts to stress me out. I don't remember painting this much in so little time as I have done in couple past weeks. It is nice to see I have got some progress. Mainly white lions, phoenix guards and archers. I have also painted seaguards, silver helms, spearmen. I have assembed my phoenix, ellyrian reavers. On some really bright side I don't have many unpainted figures anymore. I have basecoated / done rough paint jobs in almost everything. Now it only needs more time.

Also I have bought most of my figures second hand so they tend to be somewhat randomly painted. To cut things short I didn't even bother much removing any paints, simply painted over. Thus for example the whitelions armors tend to have many different shades, but in a way I like it that they aren't complete homogenous, or atleast that is something I keep telling my self :D

But here are WiP pictures. They are little bit smaller (I again forgot to resize the last picture :D )

Well right now Elves are going on shelf. I intend to enter 9th age with Daemons that I bought couple years ago. They are mostly unpainted so naturally the first thing to do is to get them in color.

@prince heresy indeed!!! I haven't really though what kind of lists I could run.

For the list building, currently I own only old unclean one and 6 old plague bearers. So nyt much Pestilence (or nurgle) go around. Most likely I will try to paint every figure and simply play lots of different list to find out what really drives me.

Looks good. Only critique I can think of is that the models in it could use a bit more contrast compared to the ark. They are now a bit the same brownish tint. Which causes them to "disappear" a bit in the rest of the model. If that makes sense. If they were to have a more contrasting color, then they would jump out a bit more.

I completely agree. It looks very epic. And what an amount of work it must have been. =D>

Although I must say that the work in progress pictures are even better. I love seeing terrain (or other projects) come together. It offers some great lessons in how to achieve certain things or effects. And it's great to see a project grow. So thanks for those as well.

If I may give one piece of criticism it's the colour of the water. It's rare in reality to find water to be this bright blue (unless it's a very large body of water like a sea). Various tints of brown are more natural.

Anyway, thank you for the pictures. And it's great to see some of your work again :)

yeah I agree on the water

Back in 2014 I made river pieces for 8th and I tried to replicate that, but I add too much that food color to the mixture.

https://imgur.com/a/LEkNi

The color that I wanted was more like the color on the straight river pieces.

On the bright side that color works rather well with the sotek green I used to color some of the terrain pieces.

then again one of my friend consolidated me that they actually look like Dead Sea water. To my greates surprise this was not intended but i have to agree that it has similar pattern on it :D
