Yeah, the blending is lovely.

Interesting that you've not textured the movement tray RT. Mine are flat painted in my Daemon army and I think it can work if you're careful.

Thanks…the jury is still out on movement trays, I prefer the untextured tray…the plain contrast against the more ‘colourful’ model.

However, the corner joins (OOP GW trays) are a problem, and very noticeable when photographed, so I am exploring how to hide the joins before considering textured trays.

An interesting alternative is to make the join part of the ‘look’, e.g. cracked earth, lava flow, whereby the join is effectively a crack…this could look good for a Daemon army.

That's an excellent idea. I've seen some really great Chaos Dwarf and WoC armies with 'lava effect on ashen wasteland'. Most flat painted trays I've seen have been black for WoC armies, which makes the joins show less of course. Mine are dark grey.

definitely agreed with the above two posters. Though I dare say that the inhabitants of Schwarzhelm are slightly less happy...

Not the place for Arachnophobes

As the creature comes into view…RT regrets fleeing from the last cluster of spiders

Image

And continues fleeing, cynically noting that Schwarzhelm is completely f*****

Image

And comes to a sudden halt…recalling that goblins use totems to control the siders

Image

Can he believe that strange mage? How much would the villagers of Schwarzhelm pay for a large totem?

Can RT save Schwarzhelm?

There's always some money to be made by enterprising individuals ;)

Love the paint job. Did you use an airbrush for the red? Or was it all by hand?

Thanks for sharing.

I'd be surprised if it hadn't been done with an airbrush - those transitions are as smooth as a baby's bottom!

Hi,

Thanks as always for the feedback and great to see that Ulthuan is still active.

All done by hand.

I tried experimenting with an airbrush last year (Harder & Steenbeck Infinity), however I spent more time cleaning it than using it and gave up. The 0.15mm needle kept blocking.

Haha, this sounds very familiar. If I'm not careful I also spend more time cleaning then painting with it. Though for me it's still faster for doing the base layers then doing it by hand. But that might be because I'm just a very slow painter.

I did find that airbrush paints (Vallejo for me) go through easier and reduce a lot of the blocking problems. I do want to try a wider nozzle at some point, but my compressor doesn't seem to like that and I don't really have enough space to use the airbrush on a regular basis and thus justify the cost for a new one to myself...

RT Staggers to his feet, nauseous and disorientated, his mind empty, his memory blank.

Looking around the strange, alien wood, images slowly start to return.

Spotting an ugly venomous spider, he suspects he has been poisoned and searches for bite marks.

Focusing on a strange Totem he experiences painful flashbacks.

Totem/spiders/Schwarzhelm? – still wondering what maliciously entity wiped his memory he searches for a bucket to throw up in.

In desperate need of medical help, RT calls the High Elf Ambulance service

Indeed. Great to see an update in one of my favorite plogs. And what an update. The terrain looks lovely.

I have a GW forest lying around somewhere as well which is slowly having its mold lines removed. And this certainly is an inspiration for painting it.

Did RT find any bite marks? Or was is just some funny drinks that caused the blackout?

I used the base with some different trees and found it quite approachable Rod. I'm quite happy with it but it's not on RT's level.

Guys, thanks as always for the feedback.

RT’s malaise was directly attributable to Photobucket preventing access to my images…aka my frustration in the unsubtle references above.

PS. I often find GW kits harder than expected to assemble, so a couple of observations that may help anyone (PoS?) thinking of building the Woods…
• I magnetized the trees to prevent them coming loose when the woods were moved.

Image

• Positioning of the branches when attaching them to the trunk is important – otherwise the leaves end up at a strange angle

Image

• The leaves also fall off quite easily - I ignored many of the join points and glued the leaves onto the branches.

I had never thought to just use a screw and a magnet instead of two magnets. That's brilliant and really easy. Your forest looks AWESOME.

Indeed! I would never have thought of that. And it's a great solution. Thank you for sharing.

Also thanks for the pointers on the leaves. That should come in handy once I start putting mine together.

@SA: painting it is more a matter of finding the time to sit down and get some paint on it then that I'm afraid to get started. Terrain is reasonably easy to get painted in my experience. With some basic understanding of drybrushing and painting slightly need you can get a long way to something looking decent. It won't be up to this level. But looking good on a tabletop.
