Rogue Traders Log: RT wakes up!

#1 Post by Rogue Trader »

Hi, after enjoying many of the painting and modelling articles, battle reports and army blogs, I would like to share some of my work (and challenges!).

I have been painting a High Elf army, rather slowly, for a few years.

Proving rather inept on the battlefield, the army has switched to covert operations focusing on the more profitable activities of smuggling and rum-running.

Keen to expand operations The Company has invested in a Skycutter.

...
Launch of the Skycutter

Image

First flight and the enthusiastic elves do a fly-by...annoying the crew of another cutter.

Image

Suddenly the Boltman’s eyes go wide…very wide and he can be seen mouthing the Elven words for H*** S***.

Image

The Roc’s harness has broken.

Image

The Roc makes for the hills, the Cutter is now a glider and the crew wish they had joined the Seaguard.

Hey Rogue Trader. Welcome to the throng here at Ulthuan!

Congratulations on an awesome first post as well. Probably the best I've seen and genuinely funny. Your painting skills are really good and the 'cutter looks great. Really nice work. I'm looking forward to seeing some more.

Lol! Can't wait for the next instalment of Ulthuan's latest comic: Rogue Trader :P  .

Lovely painting too - I think we should ask Jimmy to impose a new rule on the painting forum...no photos without commentary  ...(though maybe I should keep my mouth shut or else they might impose a new rule - no photos without paint! :? :P  )

The Roc is recovered & fitted with a ‘bio implant’.

Image

Similar improvements are made to the cutter and docking station.

Image

A Roc Management program is implemented.

Image

A new ‘cheaper crew’, is hired…impressed with the safety enhancements.

Image

But...unfortunately…the 2nd flight hits turbulence, the cutter starts to rock & roll…

Image

disaster, particularly for the new crew… the Roc survives (again)

Image

The Company now has an unmanned drone…and a Roc with issues.

Image

Next Post: After losing 2 crew teams…The Company is facing a class action lawsuit.

Info Notes:
For ease of painting and transportation I used the following sub-assemblies, Swiftfeather Roc, Skycutter, Crew and Base (+ the lower sail was painted before attaching to the cutter)

Magnets were used to hold the Roc and the Skycutter to their respective flight stands and crucially to hold the Roc and Skycutter together – (the connecting part (no. 34) broke off from the cutter whilst painting).

If glued together, I would be amazed if the model could survive transportation or gaming. I would be interested to hear if anyone has alternative solutions.

Brilliant.

I'm still wondering how they're meant to park their skycutter though. I would have thought the 'fin' on the bottom gets in the way...

Asurion and I talked about this a while ago, when I wanted a Skycutter dock incorporated into my Temple. In water the fin doesn't really get in the way, unless it's rather shallow, and air docks don't have issues =P

Thanks, colours are vaguely based on a Marsh Harrier...so it didn't look like an eagle.

Re: Rogue Trader's Painting Log: Skycutter Crew Swap

#16 Post by Rogue Trader »

Things are going badly for The Company – they stand accused (with supporting evidence) of the reckless, wasteful loss of elven lives…the Judge (from Lothern) comments, these are Seaguard not Ellyrian Reavers.
Image

The Roc is in rehab…trying to deal with its fear of flying.
Image

An inspection of the wreckage reveals that some idiot attached the wings upside down, The Company is absolved from all responsibility and the case dropped.
Image

To celebrate they attend a local ‘Air Show’…amazed at the incredible stunts…and lack of fatalities.
Image

Suspecting powerful magic…RT takes a sneak look at the construction of the cutter’s.
Image

The Company splash out on some heavily magnetised boots…unfortunately the crew are using them to show off their break dancing skills.
Image

The Company avoid bankruptcy and normal flights resume
Image

Info Notes:
• To enable crew swaps magnets were used to hold the crew to the cutter.
• Skycutter wings – I attached the wings upside down (by mistake), and thought the gap between the wings and hull intentional. This meant that the wings didn’t fit completely into the hull and b***** up the rudder attachment.
• Rudder – this is awkward, even without the above balls up!
• Tillerman – connecting this guy to the tiller and getting his feet on the ground/cutter is a bit tricky.

#17 Post by Rogue Trader »

There is a flash guy posing around on a rock outside, claiming to be a skilled pilot, able to navigate dangerous terrain and evade being shot down.
Image

What a big-head RT thought whilst avoiding a very large flag.
Image

And shielding his eyes from the glare of the gold armour.
Image

RT thought there is no way he is get on my cutter with that bloody great flag.
Image

However…morale wasn’t great, so he engaged the guy…but he was staying on the ground.

Out of the mist Stride a group of aggressive woodsmen
Image

Carefully avoiding a nearby forest
Image

Good move RT thought…my grandmother can move quicker thru the woods than you guys
Image

And those cloaks are bl**** useless camouflage.
Image

RT inspects the cloaks – must be artificial, may be a cheap wool and nylon mix
Image

but deceptively thick…could be real? RT considers buying/borrowing a few and claiming they have defensive capabilities to push the price up
Image

Suddenly their leader wielding a massive axe gets in RT’s face
Image

And produces another, worryingly familiar looking axe, broken in two.
Image

Re: Rogue Trader's Painting Log: The Case of the Dodgy Axes

#21 Post by Rogue Trader »

Another axe appears…showing a botched attempt to fix it
Image

The leader is backed up by a couple of guys with an over the top horn and an unimaginative flag.
Image

Image

RT suggests that the guys with the broken axes stand at the back
Image

This isn’t well received so RT casually mentions orphaned White Lion cubs, the Wildlife Conservation Act and a visit from the ESPCA (Elven Society for the Protection & Care of Animals)
Image

At the mention of the cubs, the Guardian starts to cry.
Image

To stop the crying RT agrees to replace their axes
Image

What ‘softies’, RT hires them to guard his supply wagons and keep them out of harm.
Image

Comment: Annoyingly two axes broke whilst painting…same models…same break.

Great job =D>
Skycutter is in my to do queue, hopefully it will come soon. Your solution for the magnets is really good, think I'll use the same or similar.
Also, I really like how you painted Seahelm, together with all the rest.

@Myth,
Thanks for the feedback and comments.

Your defender’s army looks great, I look forward to seeing the addition of a Skycutter.

I'm thinking of adding a second model…maybe a conversion based on the Dark Elder Raider (or similiar).

@Ferny,
I envisaged the Roc pulling the Raider with a High Elf crew swap (can use some of the alternative crew from the original model) + remove the Eldar blades & hi-tech bits…would also like to add 5 swordmasters as a raiding party…all a few months off unfortunately.

Responding to complaints about pay, RT reviews The Company and calculates the current wage bill.

Image
  • 1 Skycutter with a nervous crew and a Roc with aerophobia:
    • 95 silver coins
    • + 25 more for the flying bolt thrower (?)
  • 1 Elf flash git:
    • 100 silver coins (RT has a small seizure, **** me…who agreed to this?)
    • +25 for his big flag
    • + he wants spending money as he feels under protected
  • 20 woodsmen now in touch with their feminine side:
    • @ 13 silver coins each
    • + 30 extra for the commanders
    • total 290
RT rather unhappily considers his current investment of 535 silver and decides he needs better value.

"Roc with aerophobia"

For the dwarfs, there was only this. Hammerson met Grombrindal’s gaze, and the White Dwarf nodded slowly. If it must be done, let it be done well. Whether they were dead or alive, that was the only way dwarfs knew how to do anything.

And Grombrindal said "10 from the back, yeah?"

RT spots a large creature circling the camp
Image

A rather pale looking Griffon, ridden by a typical OTT Prince attempts a landing
Image

The Prince thrusts an Ad in RT’s face, publicizing the combat abilities of the ‘rare’ white albino Griffon...it’s faster, stronger and better equipped than your normal Griffon
Image

however this one (whilst pretty) is small and puny nothing like the ‘poster boy’ Deathclaw …complaining of misrepresentation he asks for his money back.
Image

The Prince angrily states he will never fall for one of RT’s fraudulent mail order promotions again
Image

WTF, RT can’t believe how, after 2 ½ thousand years, this guy can be so stupid
Image
