Tiny's Paintingbox - 31.03 Squigs

#1 Post by Tiny »

Hi,

after I have enjoyed your pictures for quite some time I decided to add my own paint blog here.

I will add some placeholder for later, but actually I want to start with introducing my Daemon army (Highelves will follow later).

Please feel free to comment. I am always happy about feedback!

Regards,
Tiny

Thank you for your kind words! :D

I have to admit my high elves are not quite on the same standard.
The reason is simply because I decided to first finish all my high elves base color coating before I start with the funny stuff like blending. Sadly i still have about the same number of elves unpainted of what you can see here with base colors. So still a lot of work ahead:

Wow, the difference in quality is quite striking, indeed! However, the painting on the Dragon Princes shows how the army will hopefully look one day :)

Hopefully... Some day...

If I have a look at the drawers of unpaited models I always loos fait that I will ever reach the point where I can start to apply all the leasing I have learned while painting daemons and orcs&goblins.

I have to admit that painting daemon is much easyer than painting high elves. Painting a daemon model with blending and color faiding, takes less time and is more rewarding, than painting a clean base color for a single high elve model.

Thank you

Yes, its a Free-Hand

The elves allready had to make place for the hord...
But I may come back later to do a close up ;)

The strategies for O&G is revers to the high elves. If possible I buy the models already with base colors via ebay and directly start with the fun stuff of doing second, third layer and some highlights. As you can see the Orcs&Goblins are my main testing ground, so some units got more love than others. :D

Lovely models, Was thinking about getting a cave squig for my Night goblin army.

Do you have any expansion plans for your high elves?

The Dragon Princes that are finished looked amazing! How tedious was it to do the entire armys base coat before any fun detailing? its a creit to your patience that you even finished them all

Terribly... But I have two more army's for some variation. The daemons with always the same flaming colors are quite tedious after some time as well...

Well I still have at least as many painted high elves as I have unpaited highes elves...

Next up should be: 10+ Silverhelms, 1-2 Phönix, 1-2 Heros on Steed, 3 RBT, 5 Reavers

Hi Tiny,

Long time no see! :) Your armies look great and you have amassed quite a collection of models. I like the daemons the most and the fact different units still have a unified look is just amazing. Great idea with dryads, really, really cool loking models! =D>

Thank you! Painting daemons is the most fun so far and I guess you can tell when watching the army.

Never the less my personal goal: In 3-5 years you all agree that the high elves are my best painted army :D

But I know it's still a far way to go...

The dragon princes you all love so much are the only models I did not paint myself. I found them on eBay and since they fitted quite well for my color schema I thought its a good motivation for myself to see there I want my high elves to be some day. Although painting daemons works quite well by now I still have a lot to learn.

The level of painting of the dragon princes is still out of scope for me:
Image

But I am confident I will get there... Some day...

Since you now know the status quo its about time to move on...

From now on I would like to present to you my latest progress, but I need some feedback how I should do it. There are basically three options:

A) Step by Step always the latest WIP pictures (multiple pictures a day) until the result is done.
B) Similar to most of the threads in this forum: Final result only
C) WIP pictures, but only at the end once there is also a final result

Which do you prefer?

...

After been sick for one week, I had so much time that I did what I have never done before: I whole unit in less then one week :P

Haha, I love how the brutal 2A becomes such cool flames! Also very interesting to see that you start with the yellow and build up - presumably that's because it's hard to get coverage with yellow? FWIW, my vote is for WIP as you do them, obviously with celebratory final pics at the end!

Not quite... It's the same reasons as using white as base color for fire opal for the eyes. The yellow make a very good base color in order to get a very bright and glowing orange.

I already have 1 week into a new project, but until there are not at least 10 votes you do not get to see more then this:

Hi Tiny,

If you can spare time then I would ask for as many photos of your WiP and Final results as possible. It shows nicely how you did that and allows for more detailed questions. What is more you can simply point out to certain picture to explain it better how you did it.

The plaguebearers look very intriguing and I like the amazing contrast between ashen body and all the bright flames. I need to check them in particular as I am about to paint some burning stuff myself :)

Cheers!

Thank you! For a very long time I did not want to play with Nurgel because I had not clue how to integrate the Nurgel models into my color schema, but now I think I can finally play them ;)

I think currentlly there are to few active readers in this thread for me to start blogging my WIP pictures in "real time". So I think for now I keep it at a summery level of my step-by-step picutes. Maybe after some time there are more readers and it may make sense to do daily updates so I can also get feedback during the process.

Regarding burning stuff I lately did a small step-by-step guide. Maybe it helps ;)

Starting with a "Mechrite Red" Base color and "Blood Red" dry brushing:
Image

First three layers to build up the structure:
ImageImageImage
I already start painting the next color while the first is not dry yet, so there is some kind of wet blending in place.

After some drying time some more details along the holes:
ImageImage

Rebuild structure with "Red Ink":
Image

And now we repeat the process until we like the result :D

During each iteration we try to go more into smaller details und fix blendings we do not like so far

Basically this is classic blending through layering:
ImageImageImageImageImage

And since the blending is to smoth now we break all of the work again by softly "dry brushing" :
Image

The whole process can very much be simplified by using less blending and more dry brushing. Reduceing 10-12 steps down to 4-5 steps. ;)

Hi Tiny,

That is indeed a very helpful tutorial! Sometimes, when one wants to paint many miniatures for a regiment, simplified but as effective method is required. And don't worry about lack of replies, painters are probably busy with catching up to your great level :)

Keep up the good work! =D>

Wow, that is some beautiful work

But... Whenever I see multi-god daemon armies my left eye begins to twitch... I really wish they hadn't gotten rid of the Daemon Animosity...

As a fluff-bunny it really irks me...

Still wonderful painting all around.
