Prince Tûrion Rilyalocë and the Golden Drake Laurëdrauginir

#1 Post by Turion Rilyaloce »

Hailing from Caledor and the city of Tor Caled, Prince Tûrion Rilyalocë (name means Descended from greatness, Glittering Dragon in Quenya) is one of the ruling council of Caledor under the leadership of Prince Imrik. Prince Tûrion came to head the house of the Golden Drake, and is the next in a long line from his family to represent this house in a war bond with the family's patron and namesake.

Laurëdraugnir (Golden in Quenya, descendant of Draugnir) is the brother to Minaithnir, Imrik's majestic mount. They are both sires of Indrauginir and grandsires to the Legendary Draugnir. Unique to most dragons, he was blessed with scales of glittering gold, which are the source of the family name Rilyalocë.

So this is the centerpiece model, for an army I have which will be called the Drakes and the Hawks. This stems from my two characters being a Dragon Prince and Griffon Noble. Theme is a joint force between Caledor and Yvresse, in which both characters are yiung princes come to head their house holds, and search for glory. All units will either be representives of the house of Dragon or Hawk. Colours will be Purle, White, and Gold. Banners and spot colour from Caledor will be Green, from Yvresse Blue.

Tûrion and Laurëdrauginir after some converting, sculpting, and Primer.
Main differences are the horns on the lower jaw were replaced with smaller ones, because I can't see Laurëdrauginir turning his head without impaling himself. These were added to the gap in horns along the back of the carmine dragon, and I think both look good. The sculpt itself is incredible. Had to balance the base with some rocks and iron as its top heavy. The saddle was made out of green stuff and spear embossments along with the back rest from the dragon kit. Straps are made from green stuff.

Here are some picks after base coating and the first two layers of scale highlights. After coming up with my backstory, assembly, and getting ready to paint, I thought I would look online and see if there were already some examples of golden dragons I could take cues from. I came across Gwydions army and was awestruck! He has almost the same ideas and they were executed to an unbelievable standard. Looking at his posts might have saved me hours, especially in regards to contrasting skin tones to scales colour. Gwydion if you ever stumble across this, thank you!

Where our projects will differ is I am using a slightly brighter set of tones, as I was thinking organic NM Gold from the get go, so I will be building backwards compared to Gwydions method of highlighting up. I'm starting with a bright yellow and shading down through to the reddish browns and browns. After I have the gradient I desire, I will add highlights and blink points. Laurëdrauginir is also going to be proportionally more gold, almost 2/1 gold to flesh.

Here are some pics after more shading and some detailing. My silver metals are going to be metallic with glazes, as I am rubbish at painting NMM silvers and I can't afford to do all the metal surfaces in this way army wide. Call it suicide prevention. For some reason I'm pretty good with gold NMM but I can't grasp the tones required to pull it off in silver...

I really like what you've done here; the scales and skin both look very good and very natural against one another.

Hey thanks, that's about half done, still working on it. I still have to add highlights and some subtle blink points, then the detailing.

Until I'm done (I estimate 2 weeks) here is a picture of my Noble BSB.

Prince Galdorian Aiwendil (Quenya, Lover of Birds) is descended from a noble family of Athel Tamara in Yvresse. His family had a long and proud history of service to Ulthuan and can trace his lineage back to the deamon wars. However his family was disgraced when it was discovered that his brother was secretly a worshiper of the cult of excess. His family lost their seat in court and has been forced to rely on their lucrative merchant holding to keep some semblance of prior status. Unwilling to accept this fate, Galdorian left his family in search of a way to clear the stain on their honor, and on his travels came across a young eagle in the mountains that had been attacked by a manticore. The eagle had evaded its attacker but was clinging to life, when Galdorian found him and saved his life. He named the eagle Thorondir, after the King of Hawks that was the symbol of his house. Galdorian has earned the respect and epithet of Windlord, due to his affinity and respect for the avians of Ulthuan.

Galdorian came into the service of Prince Tûrion after both his life and the life of Thorondir were saved when Tûrion and Laurëdrauginir fell upon a pair of War Hydras that had manage to surround them after Thorondir had broken a wing. Since that moment the two have been brothers in arms. Galdorian and Thorondir have the honor of bearing Tûrions pendant into battle as a symbol of the common goals of their houses.

Thanks Jimmy glad you like it. Saw your TK army, really nice scheme and would be a pleasure to line up against.

Here's a pic up what the scales look likes after the first highlight stage, compared to after shading. They are really bright and reflect any light that hits the edges of the scales. I have to tone them down a bit with a Sephia glaze. Then reapply in a thiner layer.

Wow, that gold NMM is awesome. As someone who is venturing into NMM territory for the first time, I really appreciate the close up pics.

Keep up the good work!

Thanks Div! For NMM the key is to keep your paints thin and do layers to build it up. After a set of shading or highlights do a glaze to get the gradient you want. For shades use brown and a tiny bit of purple for the really dark spots. For the highlights use a Sephia glaze. Most people over highlight when doing NMM, so remember that the shading is actually more important to get the contrast that makes this style pop

Here is an example of what the glazes do for your gradient. The scales on the tail have been glazed with a touch of Sephia. This tones down the highlights and blends them together with the yellows and browns. It also adds a reddish tinge so that it looks realistic, real gold goes from almost black, to reddish brown, to yellowish brown, through yellow, to white. See if you can pick out these tones in a larger scale.

Welcome to the Golden Scales club.

Now that NMM looks amazing, I just wish I had the talent to do things like that, but quite like the effect I managed to pull off with metallics.

Also, have you started your RnF? Remember, Caledorians take their armour colour scheme from the dragons that their house is aligned with.

Thanks Prince Asarion, that's great advice, I plan to do the Rnf with the gold as one of the main colors with a golden dragon shield and banner motif. You can totally achieve a great looking gold with metallics, I only figured out how to do it after doing NMM becuase it was the shading I didn't understand when working with metals before. You need that resish tinge, but I used to only highlight.

Do you have a place where you've posted pics of you're metallics? I'd love to look at them. As for having the talent to paint NMM I'm sure you do, it just has to do with understanding the techniques and how light reacts with different shapes. I've tries to post step by step so try it out. To be honest it's not as hard as people think, but is intimidating. The hardest part is commiting to start, but once you do go through to end without being discouraged, because the effect isn't realized until the final steps. Again just have the courage to try it if you want to, you can definetley do it :)

Here is the finished griffon noble, Prince Galdorian, spot colors are changed to blue for Yvresse. Decided to go with a snow leopard rear for Thorondir, and I'm happy with how it turned out, short fur is the hardest thing to emulate proprerly in my opinion. My favorite part though is the NMM free hand dragon banner, Tûrions pendant, I was on a roll and it only took 15 minutes haha

More close ups of the finished dragon, details such as the backrest, mouth and eyes have been filled in. Now it's only the saddle, horns and base to be finished.

It was bothering me that the griffons back end looked more Dalmatian than leopard, so after looking at more photo, I fixed it by leaving less of the white undercoat showing, making the spotting more dense.

If you guys see something that doesn't look quite right, please point it out. I'm not offended at all by constructive critism and the whole point of me putting up this painting project was to learn from some of you, the community of Ulthuan, as this is such a great environment for the exchange of ideas with talented individuals. So please feel free to comment on things that don't look as good as they could. And of course I appreciate the nods when I do get something right :)

I think there's a lack of suggestions because it's already too good. :D Seriously, your freehanding is good, your non metallic metals are good, your whites are good, your basing is good.

There is one thing I'd suggest though, and that's working on your photography. More specifically, the lighting. I'm really no expert here (I only discovered about macro settings about a month ago, that's how clueless I am) but it looks like you have a strong desk lamp giving most of the light, which is creating some rather dramatic shadows but more importantly, it looks like it's distorting the colours somewhat. Or it's the combination of camera + lighting that's distorting the colours.

What I'd suggest is finding a way to make the lighting less direct. Use several lamps but move them further away maybe. The best thing would be to get photos in actual sunlight, but when you can go weeks without decent sunlight that's not always an option. Perhaps someone else can give more specific and more helpful advice, but I will say: experiment with lighting, experiment with camera distance (you can crop photos in Photobucket to excess space) until you get pictures as close to how it looks IRL as you can manage.

Or possibly you could go with a thin yellow layer. Unless you aim at a snow leopard ;)

Oh sorry Elugin, I had put earlier in the thread that I was going snow leopard but I forgot to repeat it. I wanted to go with something that pops, but that didn't make the model too busy. It's amazing how much detail is on a real snow leopards coat, I found it really hard to make it close. Also noticed later that a snow leopard has a longer coat than an African leopard so the model is not ideal in the the fur length, but oh well it's too late...

Turion, I am very impressed with your painting and sculpting. I am no artist and so cannot sculpt. My painting is far better than when I started due to a lot of hard work and learning from others. However I can't sculpt worth beans so pretty much have to use what's on the model or parts from other models.

I really like the snow leopard and find it very unique. Your touchups really added to the model and made it far more leopard like. Well done my friend and look forward to seeing the rest of your army!

Thanks Delaqure! I'm on a little painting hiatus, hoping to get the dragon and prince done soon.

My advice for sculpting is to do it in layers and wait till the putty sets a bit. I'm not a great sculptor, but I found that if you apply the dimensions and layers of your goal object to the putty, it's actually not too hard. For example, when sculpting the saddle and harness, I used a piece of putty to make the saddle, then used separate cut pieces for the harnesses. It's very hard to do something like that in one go.

A visual example would be this cloak, I just added to the prince, I cut it to size out of a flat piece of putty and then attached it to the prince. I then let it harden a bit and let gravity do the work so it would fall naturally into place. If you work it to soon, you will have finger prints and its harder to control. As with anything just experiment. If it goes wrong you can always take it off, and you gain experience and confidence every time you attempt something! Just remember that it won't look perfect while you are sculpting, you have to file to remove tool marks and ripples once its hard.

I think it was very wise that you changed hte colour of the gripphon mane, as it was overlaping too much with the gold of the rider armour.

About the dragon i find it extremely interesting as im going to paint my second dragon in golden also and need extensive documentation before i get into it  .

The dragon rider is really nice, would be possible some more shots of him from all angles (and without your hands in the middle) hehe jk.
